Sometimes the pressure and expectationssurrounding playing high school sports canmake it seem more like a job than a game.

Of all the times players should remember their playingdays fondly, it should be the years on their high schoolteams when they played alongside friends theyhave known since they picked up a bat or aball. Occasionally, even teen-agers need areminder that playing a kid’s game is fun andnot hours of drudgery and disappointment. Theperfect example is this season’s Manalapanbaseball team, which found its love of thegame just in time to do something that will notbe forgotten in the annals of Braves’ history. Manalapan was 12-11 and limping into the

NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV Tournament, one year after winning the program’s firstGroup IV title with a team loaded with All-Shore talent. This was a much different groupfeaturing a host of varsity newcomers that hadstarted off the year hot and then watcheddreams of a Class A North title melt away inthe midst of early exits in the MonmouthCounty and Shore Conference Tournaments. The day before their opening-round state

playoff game against Brick Memorial, rainyweather forced the Braves to have to practiceinside. That’s when head coach Brian Boyceand his staff decided to abandon the traditional practiceof drills and repetition to remind the players that playingbaseball is still as fun as when they first learned thegame. “We just played Wiffle Ball in the gym,’’ Boyce said.

“We were going to hit, but we decided to just have funwith the guys. The kids were diving everywhere and justhaving a great time. The kids just started having funagain.’’ Senior centerfielder Ryan Ranieri belted a two-run

triple that powered a 4-1 win over a good Brick Memorialteam to get the ball rolling in their first state playoffgame, and then catcher Mike Knauf belted a leadoffhomer that sent the Braves on their way to a stunning winover sectional title favorite Jackson Memorial in the

quarterfinals. “After the Jackson game, it kind of

snowballed from there because the kids reallystarted enjoying playing again,’’ Boyce said. A blowout win over another top 10 team in

the state, Middletown South, was followed byan eight-inning upset of yet another top 10 teamin Steinert to win the program’s second straightCentral Jersey Group IV title. A mercy rulevictory over a Cherokee team considered to bein the top five in the state put the Braves intothe Group IV final against Hillsborough.

Senior Joe Serrapica pitched a complete-gameshutout and senior outfielder Vito Gadaleta hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning in a 2-0 victory that

polished off a stunning run for a team left for dead onlyweeks earlier. “Everything came together,’’ Boyce said. “I can’t

explain how or why, but it did.”The day before the Brick Memorial game, Boyce wrote

“New season starts today,’’ on the board in the locker

room. After letting go of a forgettable regular season andrealizing that it was time to just play relaxed and valuethe friendships and camaraderie they had on the team, everything changed. “The thing that also made this team special is that there

was a different hero in every single game,’’ Boyce said.No one player felt he had to shoulder the entire load.

Whether it was Rainieri’s big hit against Brick Memorial,Knauf’s homer against Jackson Memorial, third basemanBilly Moed making a sensational play to prevent thewinning run from scoring in the win over Steinert, orGadaleta hitting the biggest home run of his life in thefinal, everyone responded behind experienced stars likeSerrapica and senior shortstop Brian Lamboy. Manalapan’s victory was also a tribute to the old-school

notions of paying dues and waiting your turn. In this dayand age, if players know they aren’t going to start untiltheir senior year because of more talented playersblocking them, they usually bag it in one way or another. They quit, they transfer, they become team cancers, orthey decide to play another sport. Seniors like Ranieri, Gadaleta and senior pitcher Louis

Marotta patiently waited four years for their one chancein the sun, stuck behind All-Shore talents from last year’ssenior class. By putting the team above their egos, theywere able to be front and center on an epic ride. “Those guys were patient,’’ Boyce said. “They waited

their turn, and they made the most of it when they gottheir chance.’’ Only two other sets of seniors in Shore Conference

history, the Class of 2003 at Toms River South and theClass of 2009 at St. Rose, can say they were part of back-to-back Group titles. “This team could be referenced for the rest of my

coaching career,’’ Boyce said. “Things didn’t work outduring the regular season, but it shows that the

postseason is a whole newballgame.’Along with the players, Boyce and

his staff also were able to enjoy theride a little bit more this year. Lastseason, the Braves were loaded withAll-Shore talent, and it was a GroupIV title or bust. From the first pitchof the state playoffs, they carried theburden that they had to do somethingthe program had never done. This time it was completely

different. It was a bunch of playerswho nobody expected anything loftyfrom after the regular season. Theycould play loose and smell the rosesalong the way because the pressurewas always on the succession ofstate-ranked opponents they faced. “Last year, when it was over, it

was more of a relief,’’ Boyce said.“This year it was much moreemotional.’’

It also was plenty of fun once the players realized thatpicking up a bat and a glove is not like having to sitbehind a desk all day and earn a living. Sometimes it’snice to be reminded that there are a lot worse things inlife than having to go out and play baseball everyafternoon, regardless of how the game turns out.Manalapan remembered that just in time, and now Boycewill smile every time he remembers the 2012 season.
