Nov. 24, 2019 FROM THE PASTOR’S CORNER 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year “C”

Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

With this celebration of the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, we enter the last week of the Church’s liturgical year. We are grateful for all the blessings we have received from God during the course of the year and we look forward with hope to the beginning of the Advent season in preparation for Christmas. Thanks to God, we no longer live in the era of kings and queens, who govern their subjects with power and might. Our forefathers fought to free us from the tyranny of such kings and we are forever grateful for that. However, as Christians, we are still under the authority and power of God, our supreme King who governs the universe not with nuclear weapons and oppressive laws but with love and grace. In the true sense of it kingship symbolizes nobility and trust. A king is an honorable person that is faithful and trustworthy. History abounds with stories of great men and women whose lifestyle are an expression of the finest quality of the human person. Some of them sacrificed their time, talent, treasure and even their own lives for the good of others. Quoting an essay from Inspiring Leadership Now, we know that “very few Americans are as celebrated as Martin Luther King Jr., the Baptist minister and social activist who led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States until his tragic death in 1968. As an African-American born in the rural south in 1929, MLK faced an uphill battle all his life. Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, the young Martin was considered a precocious student who paid little attention to his studies and found great discomfort in religion. All began to change in his junior year, when he took a Bible class and renewed his faith. By 1948, he had earned a degree from Morehouse College before moving on to the Crozer Theological Seminary in Penn-sylvania. It was at Morehouse College that MLK opened his eyes to racial inequality. Following years of successful civil rights activism, MLK and 61 other activists founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957. Two years later, MLK visited Mahatma Gandhi’s birthplace in India, which emboldened him to continue down the path of peaceful activism. On August 28, 1963, MLK would leave his mark on American history by delivering the famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. King had such a profound impact on American race relations that his efforts resulted in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which authorized the federal government to desegregate public accommoda-tions. The same year, MLK received the Nobel Peace Prize. MLK would continue his activism until his assassination on April 4, 1968. His killer, James Earl Ray, was eventually apprehended after a two-month manhunt. King’s assassination was a tragic end to a remark-able life that had a seismic impact on an entire nation.

He proved, just like Gandhi, that non-violent protests can influence tre-mendous change. MLK gave his life to the civil rights movement. Nearly 50 years after his death, his legacy is stronger than ever. The third Mon-day of every January is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, an observed federal holiday in the United States (cf: Inspiring Leadership Now).” We know also the stories of Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Theresa, Stephen Hawking, Pope John Paul 11, etc. These people lived their lives for the good of others – to make this world a better place for all. Today we celebrate the feast of the greatest king that ever lived – Jesus Christ, who by His words and actions sought to build a kingdom of love, peace and justice for all. Having journeyed with Jesus from His birth, death, and resurrection, we are emboldened to say it loud and clear to the world that Jesus Christ is our king. The kingship of Jesus is unlike those of the kings of this world who lord it over their subjects and make their authorities felt. Jesus is the King who lay down his life for the good of others. Jesus is the incarnation of God. It was only on the cross that Jesus was recognized as king – INRI – Iesus Nazaremus Rex Ieudeorum (Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews). By His death, life is given to us and by His resurrection; we have the hope of eternal life. Our life is no longer lived in vain. We are proud to “give thanks to the Father, who has made us fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light. He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Whenever we celebrate the feast of Christ the King, we recall our baptis-mal promise when we were anointed to become priests, prophets and kings. Like Jesus, we are called, chosen and anointed to reign as kings to the glory of God the Father almighty. Like Jesus, we do not reign by power or might but by the Spirit of the Lord. On this Day we renew our belief in God’s authority over our lives. We affirm our belief in creation. God is the creator of the world and every-thing in it. Human beings are created in the image and likeness of God. We are not an accident of a Big Bang theory. We are an intentional creature of God - created for the honor and glory of God. Hence, our life has value and meaning. The Spirit of the Lord given to us is the spirit of adoption, which empow-ers us to cry “Abba” – “Father.” Like Jesus all baptized children of God are not in this world just to live, eat, play and die. We are in this world on a mission – to lay down our lives for the good of others. We have a man-date to constantly renew the face of the earth through charitable works of justice, peace and mercy, and we shall not rest until the least of God’s creation is saved. Jesus Christ is our king and we are proud to say it loud and clear to the world. His banner over us is love. Love is our identity – in Him we live, move and have our being. Not like the world loves do we love, but like Jesus we shall not rest until every created being experiences the power of the liberation that comes from the love of God.

Avoid “yes or no” ques ons and instead ask open-ended ques ons that will keep the conversa on going.

ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE

When you par cipate in this collec on, you help low-income families with affordable housing, health care, jobs, and rights for immigrants. ADVENT RETREAT

All Souls will be having an English Advent Retreat on Saturday, December 7th and a Spanish Advent Retreat on Saturday, De-cember 14th. We will begin at 9 am and end at 3 pm. The retreat is free of charge. Lunch will be potluck-style, so please call the Pastoral Center to register for the retreat.
