SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

W elcome to the 2013-2014 School Year! To those families who are returning to our school community, welcome back! To our new

families, welcome home. The teachers and support staff have worked very hard to ensure that the school is ready for the new year. Thank you to all with a special thanks to our custodial team who painted, stripped, moved, repaired, and reno-vated. The hive looks wonderful.

This fall, we welcome Ms. Kate Gover to our Kindergarten classroom. Mrs. Marsha Taylor is our Educational Assistant, working mostly with the primary grades. Ms. Liza Hicks also joins the hive in our Grade 2/3 classroom, and Mr. Adam Pratt is in our Grade 5/6 classroom. Welcome to all.

This year will be another busy one. We are welcoming full day, every day Kinder-garten. Our kinders will be in the building every day. This is also the last year that our Grade 7/8’s will be with us. We will be working towards a smooth transition for all of our busy bees.

September is a month of new beginnings in the education world. September is also the month of forms. We hope you will take a moment over the next few weeks to check the note totes and backpacks to ensure you have all the permis-sion forms and information that will be coming at you at an alarming rate.

Safety is important to our staff and students. We are required to know who is in our building at all times. Please sign into the school when entering the building, even if your visit is to be brief. If your child’s routine is changing for a day or longer, please write a note in the agenda. Schools must also follow the guidelines in Sabrina’s Law and therefore, lunches and snacks must be nut free.

We look forward to continuing to work with parents and students in making this year, truly remarkable.

Vulnerable Sector Check All volunteers and commu-nity members working within schools in the Up-per Canada District School Board are required to have a Vulnerable Sector Check on file at the school before they begin interacting with students. The checks are valid for two years from the date of issue. The forms are available through the school office. You must present photo ID to the police. We appreciate your cooperation in help-ing to keep our children safe.

This annual event is organized to provide an informal opportunity for families and staff to

become acquainted, not only at the BBQ at 5:00 p.m., but also at the Open House following the

BBQ (6:30-7:30 p.m.)

The School Day

School begins at 9:05 a.m.

Please remember, there is NO supervision for children prior to the start of the school day. If you are bringing your child to school, please sign them into the building and wait with them IN the Beehive. Staff are often having private meetings in and around the office/classrooms.

Recess is: 11:05 a.m.—11:45 a.m.

Lunch/Recess is: 1:05 p.m.—2:45 p.m.

Dismissal is: 3:25 p.m.

Communication Drummond Central, being the “Place to Bee”, is indeed a hive of activity. Agendas are on order, and are expected to arrive some time this week.

A school newsletter and calendar is created at the beginning of each month, and delivered in paper form via the youngest or only child on the first day of the month. A copy is also posted on our Facebook page.

Our phone system does have voice mail for staff. Staff will advise parents how best to reach them. During the day, please call the office directly and we will forward emergency and important messages a.s.a.p.

Class Placement

As you know, we do have class limits that must be followed, and we have limited ‘wiggle room’ as to class makeup. Every attempt has been made to ensure that our class sizes are within the acceptable limits, and that we have the proper support inn place given the confines of our allocations. Our team has worked diligently to ensure that the best possible startup for our students is in place. If we do need to make changes due to a change in guidelines from the Board Office, we will keep you informed.

Devices ~ Note to Students

Bringing your device to school is a decision between your family and you. The school is not responsible for finding lost or stolen devices; they are your responsibility.

Following our rules allows you to keep your device. Not following the rules allows us to limit access to your device during school time.

Texting is NOT allowed during school time. Your number one job while here at school is to be learning. You may NOT take pictures, video or recordings.

Your phone/device may be used with permission from your teacher, at appropriate times. We will be monitoring yard usage. Recess should be used to socialize with your friends and for free play.
