Over the past 35 years Besselink & Jones has become firmly establishedas one of the world’s foremost manufacturers of wall, table, floor andceiling lights. By producing classic and contemporary lights ofexceptional quality we have gained the reputation as the leading Englishproducer of decorative lighting.

There’s no doubt that the traditional methods we’ve always employedto make our lights and shades are an important part of our heritage.

Not surprisingly our roots are manufacturing based and go back to1969. The company took its present form when Hank Besselink, who hadan engineering background and Nigel Jones, who was a successful interiordesigner, combined their considerable talents.

Together they started to produce lights of exquisite design andattention to detail that were to identify the Besselink & Jones style andestablish the name.

In 1975 the first shop was opened and rapidly became famous for itsexciting range of new designs and collection of antique lights.

Soon after, full time shade and woodworking workshops wereestablished to cope with the expanding range of products and projects.

Since then our lights have been seen around the world in royal palaces including Windsor Castle and the Royal Palace Oslo, the world’smost famous hotels and clubs including The Dorchester, Claridges,Sandy Lane Resort in Barbados, The China Club in Beijing and theR&A at St. Andrews, as well as the most celebrated showpiece residencesand well-known public buildings.

Unfortunately, there is only room to show a small sample in thisbrochure from the list of over 700 in our main catalogue.

Our continuing success has meant establishing a completely newworkshop in London. Here we can expand our ability to produce anunprecedented number of products within a short period of time.

Turning around orders, large or small, has now become a morepredictable and manageable procedure and the extra capacity hasensured delivery dates are met.

Allow us to illuminate you on the history ofBesselink & Jones.

A floor show others canonly admire.

The way we produce all our lights has stood the test of time andencourages us not to change from our traditional craft skills. Some of ourdesigns haven’t changed either, as they have become classics of our time.

None more so than the standard floor lamp, particularly with anintegral tray. It stands out as one of the most readily identifiable pieces ofEnglish decorative lighting.

Sometimes we are thecentre of attraction.

We are renowned for our wide range of high quality lighting andclassic designs suitable for both contemporary and traditional interiors. However there is an expectation and appreciation of a lighting fixture inthe centre of a room that rarely extends itself to other areas.

A hanging light can give a room so much more character by itspresence and deserves to be the very best of its type.

  • Lampshades.

The only way to improveone of our lights is byadding one of our shades.

All our shades are made in the traditional way by our own dedicatedshademakers. We use time-honoured methods that have been passeddown from generation to generation. Everything is hand made and thereare no machines involved.

We are capable of restoration, renovation and replacing old or existingshades. We can even create one-offs when required or use a client’smaterial to create something special.

We use hand spun, hand dyed Honan silks from China. Differentweights and colours are mixed together in pleats, lining and edging tocreate their effects. Then there are over 80 different types of trimincluding colourful assortments of braids, fan edges and fringes toembellish the shade.

Other textures like plain card, hand painted card, oiled or crackedparchment add to the multitude of choices available. Not forgetting thevast number of shapes and sizes that can be ordered: Empire, Coolie,Cut Corner, Square, Portmeirion, Pagoda, Pumpkin, American Drumand many others.

  • The skills and techniques required to make lightingat our level of quality are drawn directly from theEnglish craftsmen of old.

This means we don’t outsource any part of ourmanufacturing process for either our lights or shades. We make absolutely everything we sell and totallycontrol our standard of quality. By not relying onworkshops situated thousands of miles away we canensure our reputation is based entirely on products wedesign and manufacture.

Our new workshop and 35 years of engineeringexperience now gives us the capacity to react quicker, allowing us to fulfil orders without delay and plan anyprojects with greater commitment.

The new engineering facilities have increased ourability to cope with any restoration, renovation, conversion and bespoke projects.

Our impeccable standard of craftsmanship is down to a fewhome truths.

    Workshop.

All the brass turning, wood carving, metal platingand bespoke work are handled in-house, while ourshademaking service, besides fulfilling new orders alsoencompasses repair, copy and bespoke.

We are also fully capable of producing our lights tomeet local wiring requirements, whether it’s for theUK, Europe or the USA. The electrical stock wecarry allows us to fulfil most specifications withoutadding any delay.

Quality runs right through every single item weproduce. Just because something is out of sight doesn’tmean it’s made to a lesser standard. Everything isproduced to the same exacting degree as the mostprominent feature.

The skill and craftsmanship we lavish on each pieceis quite incredible in today’s world of machine drivenassembly and mass production.

In truth, there are no short cuts to creating a wellmade piece of decorative lighting which will retain itsbeauty and grow in value over the years.

  • We’re light years ahead in being able to create exclusive andone-off designs.

Even though we have a constantly evolvingcollection of beautiful lighting with many variations, there are occasions when something bespoke is theonly answer.

Naturally, being asked to produce a one-off notonly brings with it a sense of challenge but it is alsoan immensely satisfying accolade because we arehelping to create something very special.

We fully utilise our knowledge and expertise forquality lighting and design to provide the completebespoke service for that individual touch.

Our workshops being close by inevitably make anyproject much more convenient and easy to progress.

We are delighted to make the seemingly impossiblehappen and we draw our inspiration from our richheritage of creating classic pieces.

Sometimes adapting one of our existing designsmay be the best answer. Our engineering know-howcan produce new variations by altering some of thecomponent parts and the finish, to give a totally newindividual look.

On other occasions we are asked to adapt vases, tinsor artefacts into a decorative light and if it’s possiblewe are happy to apply our expertise in creating aunique lighting piece.

Through word of mouth and recommendations wehave been able to develop close associations withmany of the world’s most respected interior designers.

It has resulted in our bespoke service becomingeven more popular and our exclusive designerinitiated lights being placed in the most prestigioushomes, yachts, offices, clubs and hotels in the world.
