In late August the summer finally arrived and it was great to see so many club members enjoying the weather and displaying their cars at shows here and overseas. After attending one show I learnt a valuable lesson: If you don’t want to risk going hungry always take a picnic. On the subject of shows, the more eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that last issue I thanked an imaginary region for their efforts at Goodwood. My apologies to the South East Region who did a great job in miserable conditions. There is one big show left in the 2007 calendar, The Classic Car Show at the NEC near Birmingham in November. With over 1,000 cars on display and lots of traders this is a must do event for any car enthusiast. John Brookes has organised a Porsche display on the Club stand, please come along and say hello. Look for the advert in this issue explaining how to buy discounted tickets. Please remember to hand us your ticket stubs so that the club can claim a rebate from the organisers.

The last few months have been very busy here at HQ with the web site, forum and our new editor Tony getting to grips with All Torque. I’m sure you will agree that issue 66 looks fantastic and a pat on the back is very well deserved. All Torque is your magazine so please send in your articles and tell us about your car, where you’ve been what your region has been up to. You don’t have to be a wordsmith, Tony will edit the articles before inclusion. With the vast majority of our members online we have stopped producing the monthly newsletter. All regional and relevant national events will be published in All Torque to keep you up to date with what is happening. The latest club news will be published on the website as it happens with a summary in All Torque.

The website has also received a makeover, go to www.tipec.net and browse through the new features. Don’t forget to register for the TIPEC forum whist you are surfing. When a South African bloke first mentioned the idea of a forum to me, I was very dismissive of the benefits. I couldn’t have been more wrong; the forum is an excellent place for asking where to get those elusive parts and how to diagnose faults etc. It also has a fun side with a friendly atmosphere. Give it a try, I’m very glad I did.

Until next time,

Porsche Web Cinema

TIPEC members get married!

Porsche have been providing downloadable pictures, sound samples and movies on their corporate website for some time. Now they have added an online cinema. It’s only available on the German site, but easy enough to use whether you speak the lingo or not. Point your web browser at www.porsche.com/germany/multimedia/webcinema/ and click the ‘eintreten’ link to enter. The cinema has videos featuring all of the current Porsche model ranges and a selection of motorsport clips from the present and the past. You can view them fullscreen (some are better quality than others) and store favourites to make up your own customised ‘TV channel’.

That’s eight TIPEC member Porsches lined up in a row at the wedding of Alan and Gina Purcell, both members of the TIPEC South Central region.

They married on Friday 21st September, and were kind enought to invite a host of members and their cars along for the day. Al’s Boxster S and Gina’s 964 amongst them!

A great day was had by all. Thanks to Chris Kenward for the photos.

TIPEC on the TV

John Oakes was lucky enough to have his 928 featured on ITV2’s Used Car Roadshow. Here’s the story in his own words:“After Angus had posted on the 928 Forum that a car was required for filming in the Leeds area, I emailed them with a few pictures. The next day I had a call from them saying they liked my car and asking me to be on the show. We agreed filming in Leeds 29th July, but two weeks earlier the production company asked if I could come along to the Classic Car Show at Capesthorne Hall in Cheshire instead? We arrived about 9:00am, the presenters Jason and Penny came along later.

“I handed a sheet out to Jason about the car’s speed, acceleration, cost etc. He said that he had owned a ’92 928 GT and had liked it very much because of its acceleration and handling but was not too happy about the MPG when he drove it hard. We all know that fuel efficiency is not one of the 928’s strong points!

“I moved the car into position with the house in the background. One of the film crew quickly cleaned the wheels and screen of grass and flies. Filming took about an hour, they filmed Jason first and then did it again filming what Penny had to say. The two presenters had a laugh and a joke about Jason having a 928 bought by his girlfriend when he was fourteen years old, with Penny was asking how come he had a girlfriend at fourteen … if you caught the show, you’ll know what I mean!”

The show was broadcast by ITV2 on Wednesday 29th August and has already been repeated twice. The Used Car Roadshow website is www.usedcarroadshow.co.uk

A Dodge-engined Porsche?Okay, so the Porsche Design Group are not the same company as Porsche AG. These days though, they are very much owned by Porsche AG … so we’re allowed to talk about them in All Torque, right? Especially when they have something like this up their collective sleeve.

The Fearless 68 is not Porsche Design Group’s first yacht, but it is undoubtedly their most striking. Powered by a 525 horsepower engine from a Dodge Viper (why it doesn’t have a Porsche-developed powertrain is a mystery!), this sleek speedboat starts at a cool £150,000 … and the price rises once you start designing your very own bespoke interior in collaboration with the team at Porsche Design Group.

That Dodge Viper engine pushes the 28-feet-long yacht to almost 90 mph, making it one of the wolrd’s fastest in its production class and knocking on the door of true powerboat speeds.

Page 6: All Torque 66

“It started with the purchase of a beautiful 1988 Turbo Cup, or Turbo SE as it was known in the UK. A lovely fast car, with M030 suspension, superb brakes and sweet engine, all dressed up in a great muscular shape and crazy pink interior!

“The local section of the French Club 944 forum was very active and I quickly made a lot of great friends with cars from 924 to 968 and even 928s. We remain friends today, despite me no longer owning my Porsche, and to me this represents the best aspect of 944 ownership; in fact some cars on the poster are specifically those owned by my friends.

“I once had a job as a designer and felt that a poster detailing the front-engined four-cylinder Porsche series would be a fun tribute. I wanted my 924-944-968 poster to be 100% accurate, so contacted forums all over the world to get as much data as possible on local models and have connoisseurs check my drawings. I’m very happy with this poster: the help of fellow owners and forum members definitely was a bonus. I managed to create a very colourful rendering, thanks to the creativity of Porsche, the longevity of the model and the passion of the owners!”

You can buy copies of Alexandré’s poster from him directly for 15 Euro by contacting him over email on: [email protected] Alexandré says that P&P can prove expensive, so suggests ordering in bulk by TIPEC region. He’s happy to discuss discounts for such orders.

Alexandré has very kindly given us two copies of the poster to give away to fortunate TIPEC members who can answer the following question: How many model profiles are featured on the poster?

Email your answer to [email protected] or just phone it in on 0845 602 0052 and you might get lucky!

Win a commemorative poster Porsche obsessions display their symptoms in many different ways. For Alexandré Godard, a gradute of Franco Sbarro’s ESPERA car design school near Switzerland, it manifested as a desire to illustrate Porsche’s range of front engined four-cylinder models as a spectacular poster.

Member’s lettersI have a TIPEC success story to relate. I’ve been putting together articles for All Torque for a few years now. It’s been fun doing it, and I’ve always been encouraged to do so by the resident editor of All Torque. These Porsche related pieces have helped me to land a full time dream job as a writer with Classic Cars magazine!

David White first put one of my articles in to All Torque back in 2003. This was about my 924 Le Mans, and why and how I came to acquire it. Adrian Streather’s tenure as editor was shorter, but he squeezed in some of my handiwork, and Chris Kenward has also included quite a few articles from me in the magazine. Copies of some of these formed part of my CV for the job application. I’ve always been impressed by the friendly enthusiasm of our editors, and it’s been a pleasure dealing with them. I would like to offer them my heartfelt thanks for the interest they’ve shown in my humble efforts, and their support at all times. They have helped me to get my dream job. At the age of 58, I’m embarking on a new career: unbelievable! Thanks to their hard work, TIPEC has a magazine to be proud of.

Yours sincerely, Eric Kwiatkowski

I’ll admit this one isn’t a letter to the Editor. It’s a letter from the Editor instead. Thanks to Sean and the TIPEC committee for trusting me and having faith. Thanks for Chris Kenward for all his efforts on the magazine in the past, for making the changeover relatively painless and for friendly advice afterwards. Thanks most of all to the TIPEC members who have given their own time, wirting articles and taking photographs, and the ROs who have done likewise for the back section of the magazine. Now I need you all to do it again. Write stuff, take photos, and send it all in. This is your magazine, I can’t make it happen without you!

Cheers, Tony Blow

Restoration Report

With a little help from TIPEC, Jamie McNeil’s 911 SC was completely restored in a single year, inside and out

I bought my 911 SC about a year ago. It was already a fairly good car, but you know what happens when you start these things … you just get carried away

Refurbishing an old car can be a confusing, daunting and lengthy process, but with the help of TIPEC Scotland Region ARO Alan Neilson and some specialists suggested by club members, I got through the process unscathed.

I used James Blair Bodyshop, local to me in Falkirk, who do a great job, if at their own pace. I arranged a deal whereby I would strip the car, remove the windows, panels and wings and prepare the body for James’ repairs and painting. This kept the costs right down. With no end of help from Alan Neilson, I got the stripping down done in good time. The body was taken down to bare metal in key areas. Bad metal was repaired, including replacement of a whole front wing.

… at least once the front boot gets emptied!Stripped down, patched up, repaired and ready to go …

Jamie’s 911 SC is the winner of this issue’s Meguiars prize, £50 worth of cleaning & car care products! Great work Jamie, the car’s beautiful.

I refurbished the seats, with a good friend of mine replacing the bolsters and lending advice enabling me to re-dye the leather, add leather conditioner and seal them all myself.

Brian Miller Motors in Edinburgh undertook a full rebuild of the heating system, along with a myriad of small repairs to other bits and pieces. Brian was helpful, informative, and a great help on the telephone throughout my project, whether sourcing parts or reminding me where they were meant to go once I’d removed them and left them on the garage floor for too long!

With Alan’s help I completely refurbished the interior and all the electrics, as well as doing the full rebuild of the car, from brakes to seals and fasteners, right up to final servicing. Between the two of us, we managed to rebuild from bare shell to MOT pass in just two weeks … in the nick of time for the Callendar Classic, where my finished 911 SC proudly took its place among the TIPEC Scotland Region display.

Masked up ready for painting

Back in one piece and proudly on show at the Callander Classic

That’s an awful lot of masking tape …

Just like watching paint dry

For a small donation of £10 collected to support the Sussex Air Ambulance, each of our members had a 30 minute Annual Vehicle Check and report carried out. The Service Team headed up by Steven Ayers, Service Manager and Peter Rowe, Senior Service Advisor, had four technicians inspecting our cars. The workshop soon became the focus with apprehensive members watching on as the technicians went about their inspections.

It was great to be able to chat to the technicians as they inspected each car and pick up snippets of information about the different models booked in. The OPC’s databases allow for a search to be made on each cars chassis number. It was quite a surprise for one of our members with a 17-year old 964 to be told that his car was due for two ‘Chassis Recalls’. Better still, these would be carried out free of charge as and when it was convenient for him. Please bear this in mind if your own Porsche hasn’t been into an OPC recently. Your local OPC should be able to carry this outstanding recalls check out for you, irrespective of the age of your vehicle, free of charge.

None of the cars inspected had any nasty surprises and the completed Annual Vehicle Check forms were discussed with the

owners afterwards who were advised of any work that was required or recommended. We had 31 cars go through the process, all treated with meticulous attention to detail by the OPC Mid-Sussex staff.

Andy Crabb, Executive Centre Principal, made time to speak to everybody from TIPEC and PCGB. Andy wishes to work closely with all local car clubs and has since been in regular contact to promote offers and future invites to TIPEC members. A great morning was had by everyone, this event and one other held at the OPC Mid-Sussex in the same week meant that we were able to boost the week’s fundraising figure to over £700 for such a worthy cause.

Thanks to all those who attended, including Steve Vincent, Tony McAlpine from SELNK and Jason Gibson, Thames Valley ARO, for travelling the extra distance. Also John Jones, RO R23 Sussex PCGB, for assisting with the planning. Special thanks to all the staff at OPC Mid-Sussex who made our visit so pleasant, especially Andy Crabb and the Service Team, as shown below.

Inspection MorningTIPEC members from the South East Region were invited to take part in a charity ‘Inspection Morning’ with R23 Sussex PCGB members at OPC Mid-Sussex, Burgess Hill.

With the outside of your Porsche now gleaming for everyone else’s benefit, perhaps we’d better look at the bit you see the most: the interior

Once you’ve chucked out all the obvious debris and given the car, including boot, spare wheel well and engine bay, a good hoover, it’s down to a lot of fiddling about to be frank.

Carpets do benefit from properly fitting mats, which won’t set you back more than £100, but they need to be properly beaten and wet vacced (if you have such a machine), and grit does damage the backs of your shoes anyway.

The fixed carpets can be cleaned with a wash mitt and car shampoo, dried off with a towel and any troublesome spots dealt with using a purpose made fabric cleaner and lightly brushed. The same treatment for fabric seats too: spray a little fabric cleaner onto your cloth, not the seat directly.

Leather seats are of course prone to discolouration from clothing and wear on the bolsters. You’ll need a specialist leather cleaner and conditioner, in two separate products. Application is dead simple. Try to get the leather warm as this seems to help them give up dirt better, apply cleaner with a cloth, working lightly.

Where dirt is ingrained use a soft leather brush to agitate, leave it on the leather for a couple of minutes and then, using a clean microfibre cloth, wipe off the residue. Repeat if required.

In applying conditioner, which returns softness and suppleness to seats, again warm leather where possible, application again via a sponge, wipe lightly ensuring total coverage. Don’t rub too hard but enough to help it to start soaking in, leave for 10–15 minutes and buff off with clean microfibre cloth. After another 30 minutes repeat buff and you are all done. Repeat monthly.

All of the products referred to above are available, with copious free advice, from club member Mark, who runs Race Glaze Ltd, TIPEC National Concours Sponsor 2007 & 2008. Please call 0178 076 7080 or see www.raceglaze.co.uk

For worn bolsters and squabs, scratches and scuffs Race Glaze do small kits with Porsche coloured permanent leather dyes which are very simple to apply and tidy up work areas. If the entire seat is showing its age you can have them completely retrimmed, but it will cost you about £500 per seat.

Vinyl, running boards and seat bases are best wiped over with a damp microfibre cloth and a very dilute degreaser. Whether you dress it is up to you: some people like a shiny dash and switches, others not, but in all cases less product used gives best results.

If your 924/944 dash has cracked there’s not much you can do about it. Headlinings can be tricky as too much moisture results in sagging, so best to minimize use of liquids here.

Though my wife finds it a bit extreme, I keep one of our dash detail brushes in the car to clear dust and crumbs (caused by the kids, not me!) from awkward crevices. It’s this attention to detail that really makes the difference.

Likewise, wrapping a cloth around a wooden spatula gets the dash clean close to the windscreen. When polishing glass, avoid direct sunlight and use minimal product, buffed off immediately.

Engine baysThis is what separates the Concours cars from the tidy cars! For most, use of a good degreaser, deoxidizer to restore dulled alloy parts like engine blocks and some plastic dressing after a good wipe over does the job. You can polish up bright metal parts to better than new, taking time to rub at first hard with a cloth, then lighter and finally with your finger to progressively produce a fine finish, though I never advocate surpassing the factory finish with extra chromed parts and fancy coloured electrical leads.

In all work under the bonnet, wear latex gloves or you’ll rip your hands to shreds and have them coated in oil, keep liquids away from electrical components and air filters (cover them with cling film) and never work on a hot engine. Avoid the use of hot pressure washers or steam cleaners, and if you want a really professional job, a trained valeter won’t take more than two hours and charge about £50 to do the job for you.

The original Brooklands site at Weybridge in Surrey is the birthplace of British Motor Racing. It was the worlds first purpose-built motor circuit, constructed by wealthy landowner Hugh Locke King in 1907. Parts of the original circuit still remain, such as the 29 feet high Members Banking and Bridge, none more famous than the Clubhouse which now is now the reception area for the Brooklands Museum visitors. The ultra-modern MBW has been built alongside, on the site of the old Vickers Aircraft runway.

The first sighting of the MBW building leaves you in no doubt that you are about to arrive somewhere very special. On this historic site, innovators and pioneers pushed themselves to the very limits of possibilities. Land speed records were broken and broken again. A couple of S.E Region early bird members, Alan Cordery and John Wallin were dispatched with clear instructions to somehow occupy 25 car park slots for the rest of us arriving in convoy from the South East Region and other groups and

individuals from the SELNK and Thames Valley Regions. Alan and John did a great job and our line-up of 17 Porsches looked very impressive. That’s not to say other non-Porsche cars weren’t, but you know what I mean!

MBW is set on three floors, very similar to a modern shopping mall. Whilst there are sales facilities where you can test drive and purchase anything from a Smart car to a Maybach, the main purpose of MBW is to showcase its brand to the public without such pressure.

On Sunday 25th March, twenty-plus TIPEC and family members visited Mercedes-Benz World (MBW) at Brooklands.

All Torque 66 page 15

On the Second floor you can follow Mercedes-Benz history and innovations in the cinema, children can play and learn in the KidsZone, and the entire AMG performance range of cars, Smarts and a McLaren Formula 1 car are on display. Also included are the Gullwing Five-Star Restaurant and a test track viewing area. The First floor houses more showcase vehicles, and the Maybach and SLR McLaren suite. Not to be missed is the 3D virtual reality theatre. Here you sit, or should I say lie, back in a vibrating and moving seat with your 3D specs on. It takes a little while for your mind to adjust to the visuals, but once done, the three pointed Mercedes-Benz star will float and rotate in the centre of the room, before becoming a CLK being built. Starting as a piece of sheet metal in the floor pan press tool you work your way through the entire build process and finish up on your first test drive. The Ground floor houses another showcase range of vehicles, galleries, shops, cafés and a viewing area of the test drive start off and return points. The outside perimeter of the building is where the second-hand vehicles are displayed.

All the vehicles on display at MBW (with the exception of the F1, SLR and Maybach cars) were fully available to sit in and twiddle including a couple of £150K plus AMGs.

Several of our members booked drives on the Performance & Handling Wet & Dry test track. It costs £15–20 for a 20 minute passenger ride with an instructor or £100 to take the wheel of one of the top AMGs yourself for a full hour’s instruction. The 2.5km circuit tests your ability to control the cars on a very varied track of sweeping and tight corners plus long straights where you can get the cars up to a shade over 90mph. Those large six litre AMGs’ exhaust notes sound like WW2 fighter planes when they

accelerate. Your only restriction is not to squeal the tyres, as complaints from the locals have been expressed. Four squeals and you’re off the circuit, so use the ABS instead. The session ends on the wet skid pan in close proximity for all to see. Judging by the smiles on the faces of those who tried the test-track experience, it’s one to be thoroughly recommended.

I spent a fair portion of the day with Jon Aylward who is disabled and one of our real S.E. Region characters. Jon, although wheelchair bound, never lets his disability hinder his car buying. Typically £70K spent on his 987 Boxster S didn’t totally satisfy him. He has now replaced the Boxster with a rare Aston Martin DB7 GTA and also has temporary ownership of a Mercedes-Benz SLK350 until his SLK55AMG that’s on order turns up. Although Jon couldn’t get a test drive from the dealership where he has ordered his car from, MBW had him in a SLK55AMG within 15 minutes of asking. Firstly he was taken out on track as a passenger, then later for an hour at the wheel. He phoned me afterwards to say “What a car!”, but was knackered and heading home totally satisfied with the experience. Even children from the age of 12 years (and taller than 1.5m) can take to the track in an A-Class. My boss recently took his son on his 12th birthday to MBW whereby his present was a test drive. Apparently, he hasn’t talked of much else since …

Everyone working at MBW should be congratulated on making our experience so pleasurable. Special thanks must go to Sarah Kirby, Sales and Events Co-ordinator at MBW, who assisted me with planning our visit and to all of those who attended.

964 Damper upgradeFor some time now my C2 cabby has run on Eibach lowering springs with no modification to the dampers or bump stops and now more work is needed to improve the handling and, if at all possible, the ride comfort.

I recalled an article by Streacher about 964s which contained a recommend KONI dampers to compliment Eibach lowering springs. Searching through the usual Porsche suppliers I found top adjustable KONI Sport inserts for my OE struts for sensible money. They soon arrived: boxed but without fitting instruction! I deduced that major surgery was necessary to accommodate these inserts into OE struts. Internet sites explained how to cut the top off the original strut housing and remove the old damper mechanicals. Drilling a new hole in the base of the old strut housing then allowed the new insert to be secured with an allen bolt. A touch agricultural I thought, but as this was approved by KONI, I’d give it a go.

To give me the option of reverting back to original specification I sourced donor left and right handed front strut housings to perform ‘open heart surgery’ on. Straightforward you would think, but for various reasons I ended up with one Bilstein and one OE Boge strut, both near-side and both almost completely useless. To make matters worse the compatible rear adjustable KONIs I subsequently ordered were delivered missing one of their lower rubber bushings. Hair pulling time! To this day Koni have still not produced the required bushing! Poor show KONI.

Never one to give up, I decided to source yet another pair of front donor struts and quickly won a good pair on eBay for £10.50. That will do nicely!

Surprisingly, fitment of the front KONI inserts proved to be quite straightforward, cutting 15mm down from the top (KONI instructions say 25mm) of the donor strut with a hacksaw, the old damper workings were removed and a new fixing hole drilled in the strut base.

My method for assembling the push-fit Koni insert was to use the fixing hole in the strut base and a suitable threaded rod. I then wound the new inserts into the donor struts finally removing the screwed rod and securing with the allen headed bolt supplied. (KONI instructions don’t say how to install the insert ie. screw-in or press-in?) A touch of spray grease eased this process and will no doubt protect the insert from corrosion in the long run.

With both new struts ready, the front of my cabby was raised and axle stands fitted. With the axle stands forming a stable base, camber readings were recorded on both front brake discs prior to removal of the old struts. In the jacked-up position my brake discs both gave a 2.25º positive camber reading. This is the figure I’d use to set the rough camber on re-assembly.

To avoid having to remove the front brake line as it passes through a front strut bracket, I withdrew the securing ‘C’ clip and sawed through one side of the Rear dampers as received from KONI

bracket enough to allow the copper brake pipe to be slipped out. The new struts had been similarly modified to allow the brake pipe to be refitted without the need to bleed the brakes afterwards. (modified bracket just visible in picture of assembled strut) With the ABS and brake wear wires released it was now just a matter of undoing the two 10mm allen headed bolts at the base of the strut and the four 13mm upper strut fixings in the luggage compartment. The strut complete with spring and top mounting is then lifted out complete. If you have lowering springs like mine, the pre-tension on the road spring may allow you to remove the top mounting nut safely (ideally with an impact gun and 22mm socket) without the need for spring clamps. If in any doubt here, use spring clamps to avoid the top mount flying off and causing injury.

Finally, re-assemble the road spring, bump stop, dust sleeve and top mount on to the new damper strut, not forgetting to exchange the plastic clips and holder to accommodate the ABS wires. These plastic items are held on by central dowels which, when fitted, expand each fitting. Three dowels will need to be knocked out and refitted.

Offering up the new strut to the car I found it easier to fit the bottom 10mm allen bolts first before raising the strut into the four top inner wing fixings. Tightening up the top 13mm nuts then allowed the camber setting previously recorded to be set by pinching up on the 10mm allen bolts whilst holding the brake disc at the previous setting, ie. 2.25º positive in my case. The brake lines were then re-positioned in their brackets and the ‘C’ clips fitted.

Note that the 964, unlike previous 911s, has no adjustment of camber or castor on the front top strut mounting apart from a 180º rotation for turbo bodied cars, so the front wheel camber setting is provided by a slotted mounting on the top 10mm allen bolt. With the basic camber set, the road wheels were fitted and the car lowered to the ground.

A quick run round the block was enough to settle the suspension before the front camber readings were re-taken. The standard 964 has a factory front camber setting of 0º (plus or minus 10 minutes) whereas the RS figures are one degree negative, again plus or minus 10 minutes. I elected to set mine midway and a quick adjustment soon had both wheels matched. The difficulty for a DIYer is finding a flat surface on which to take the readings using what is basically a straight edge and a spirit level. The tracking was reset to the factory figure of +25 minutes total. Ride heights were equalised. Please note here that ride height will affect the measured wheel cambers and vice versa: an adjustment of a front wheel camber in the positive direction will raise the ride height due to the rotation of the front hub around the lower strut securing bolt. Ride height, camber setting and finally toe adjustment need to be set and reset as each is adjusted. A good reason, perhaps, to take it to an expert if unsure.

This suspension upgrade proved to be most worthwhile as now my cabby has a more controlled ride, feels quite comfortable and handles brilliantly. The ride is better at speed than before but can be a touch harsh around town and on broken surfaces. A better compromise for me than the Eibach springs with standard dampers.

These KONI dampers have easily accessible top hand wheel adjustment. I started mine off on at the lowest setting as these sport dampers are almost solid if placed on the firm setting. Now, if I were to go racing …

The rear Koni sport adjustables were easier to fit being a straight swap for the originals. (my one missing lower bush aside). They come with a threaded portion to take the original adjustable spring carrier and can be fitted in a matter of an hour or so. Top adjustable, these too were initially set at their softest although after a few hundred miles I might be tempted to stiffen them up slightly to match the relatively stiffer fronts. Time will tell, but fellow TIPEC member James McLaughlan will have to tell how that goes—he’s just bought the car from me!

I had a poster of a 928 on my wall as a boy and I always have a good look at any 944s and 968s I encounter, but 911s don’t push my buttons (luckily, as I can’t afford one), and it’s 914s that have ‘done it’ for me since I read and re-read and read again a magazine article on one when I was about twelve years old. With a modest amount of money burning a hole in my savings account, I looked online for a likely car, and literally as I was putting together a wanted ad with an emphasis on budget, a for sale ad appeared. It was also three hundred miles away from me, on the south coast. So I thought quickly (but not too deeply) and emailed my bank.

As we drove into the seller’s road, the sun was shining and I got all excited in precisely the same way as you mustn’t when viewing a used car. He showed me carefully and politely around the car, pointing out things like the operation of the roof, and the fly-off hand-brake, and to his credit, the oil leak, the rust and the mis-coloured passenger door with the glass that would wind down but not up. The test drive went very well. The car started, ticked-over and pulled-away smoothly, and the seller commented on the squeak from the rear suspension that hadn’t been there the last time he’d driven it (“probably a dry bushing”) and then it was my turn to drive, and I learned how skilled the seller was in his use of the clutch and gearbox! Early 914s have a dog-leg, tail-shift box with a notoriously vague action, and combined with left-hand-drive in an unfamiliar setting and on a sunny day in a popular seaside town; I can’t imagine a worse way to have begun learning how to drive the thing. But I was totally smitten, and even as I crunched the stick into first, via reverse, third, and several neutrals, my thoughts were of how I would develop the technique before too long, rather than how I needed to choose another, different, car.

I was still harbouring thoughts of driving all the way home in my purchase as we parked back where my friend was waiting, and then … well, I pulled the handbrake on something ‘clicked’ and the handbrake was locked solid, along with the rear wheels, and the car wasn’t going anywhere never mind three hundred miles. The seller to his credit, offered to nullify the sale and give me my envelope of cash back, but it was too late for me by then and I decided to test the levels of customer service of Green Flag instead!

That was June 2006, and at a price that should rightly have got me a box of bits, I didn’t perhaps get the ‘perfectly usable and fun’ car I’d idealised, but I did get a taxed and MOT’d ‘rolling restoration’. Its perfect for my needs, as if I had too good an example I would hesitate to change anything or to learn as I worked on it … and apart from those early-morning blatts through Delamere Forest, with the sunshine flickering through the tree canopies and the Dellortos growling, popping and farting, it’s the tinkering and learning and gradual improvements that I enjoy most about classic car ownership.

Of course, one of the other great things about driving a 914 is people’s reaction - ‘what’s that?’ - ‘isn’t it pretty? - what is it?’ - ‘did you know your car’s on fire, Mister?’ being possibly the most common questions (it’s not on fire, it leaks oil onto the heat exchangers after a run).

The picture taken in front of ‘Toad Hall’ (actually Bodidris Hall, in North Wales) is from last autumn, when I still hadn’t figured-out that the squeak from under my backside wasn’t a dry bush in the rear suspension after all; it was the floor-pan flexing against the sill! I’ve bought a MIG and learned to weld to a serviceable level since then.

Oh, and if you drive around Chester in your Porsche, and you spot me in my little red targa, and you know what it is, give me a flash or a wave or something (polite), because I see plenty of more modern Porsches around here, but I tend to get waves only from things like bug-eyed Sprites and Alfa Spiders.

Nothing to brag about, I know, but I am old enough to remember driving my Morris Minor to Aintree in 1955 for the British Grand Prix and watching Stirling Moss, now Sir Stirling, pull an extraordinary move out of his versatility bag, beating Juan Manuel Fangio to the chequered flag by one tenth of a second. They were both driving identical Mercedes-Benz W 196s. Fast forward fifty-odd years and I remain a hopeless case; that GP baptism in 1955 the start of a love affair with motor sport that is as passionate today as when I was a lean bellied 20-year old.

Bear with me for a moment, for there is a connection that I want to share. Over those several decades I have watched motor racing, especially Formula One, move from the heart-stopping excitement and danger of the fifties and sixties to the fast food variety we seem to have had thrust upon us in recent times. Races now are won with computers, robots, and budgets of millions.

Ask yourself, when did you last see a Grand Prix driver at work? I mean really, physically, hard at work? You know he’s in there somewhere, tucked away in his high-tech carbon fibre composite cocoon, but can you actually see him; witness his body language and watch his arms move? No way, José.

Page 22: All Torque 66

Thankfully, through the good offices of Lord March, in these more modern times we have the Revival Meeting, a time-warp series of races that aims to relive the glory days of the motor circuit that is Goodwood. It’s an annual jamboree that allows old geezers like me, plus thousands of young bloods who have cottoned on to the sheer wonder of it all, to relive those magic moments.

Now, for three days each September, the circuit echoes to the spine-tingling bark of golden-age Grand Prix cars, thundering sports and GT cars, historic saloon cars and little-seen Formula Juniors.

What is more, these important historic racing cars are driven in spirited fashion, no prisoners taken, by the famous names of motor sport, past and present … and you can see their arms move! It is a wonder to behold.

But the Goodwood Revival is far more than a series of races for historic cars; it is the only event of its kind to be staged in the romantic time capsule of the Fifties and Sixties. Wheel-to-wheel racing is the order of the day, plus a reincarnation of all that was best in unarguably the most evocative period of the sport we love.

Complementing the nostalgic appeal, this year saw some new innovations presented, including the redevelopment of the Revival period garage into a 1930’s-style

art deco building, housing a range of mouth watering machinery in art deco settings, plus the inaugural Freddie March Spirit of Aviation ‘concours d’elegance’ for pre 1967 aircraft. In all there were over 25 of the world’s finest, most elegant and rarely seen planes. Elegance personified it certainly was, a million light years from Luton Airport.

In contrast, the gruelling 10,000-mile Peking to Paris endurance race marked its centenary in 2007, and in recognition some dozen or so pre-Great War cars that participated in the re-enactment were located by the main track crossing, a site further enhanced by the back-drop of three authentic Mongolian ‘yurt’ dwellings.

Add to all this the largest vintage fashion event in the world; attended by over 100,000 visitors, the overwhelming majority of whom were suited, booted and groomed from the tips of their ‘femme fatale’ red fingernails to their winkle picker shoes, enjoying live 1950s music, jive dancing lessons and period props, such as double-decker buses. Members of the Goodwood Actors Guild entertained throughout disguised as spivs, bobbies on bicycles, portrait painters, glam girls and film stars. It was fantastic.

Now to Aintree, 1955, and the connection? When the occasion is merited, Lord March and his expert advisors select a warrior of the golden era and pay tribute to his racing achievements. Past recipients include Sir Jackie Stewart, Sir Jack Brabham, Phil Hill, Barry Sheene, Graham Hill, Jim Clark and John Surtees.

This year’s tribute honoured a hero of my teenage years, Roy Salvadori, highly deserved and not

a moment too soon. In that aforementioned 1955 Grand Prix, Roy lined up some way down the grid in an uncompetitive Maserati, battled like a man possessed, gaining places and winning gasps of admiration until on lap 19 his gearbox disintegrated. Now, some 52 years later, the man was being feted again, and there too, on display, was the very car he drove. It was, for this old fan and thousands of others, nostalgia personified.

Meetings are held first Wednesday of every month 8pm at The King Robert Hotel, Bannockburn, Stirling, FK7 0LJ.

On 26th August, we attended the Callander Classic show. Unlike previous years we have attended, this was not our Scottish Concours event, we had decided to move the Concours to the Selkirk show because Callander has an entry fee and we felt it unfair to ask members to pay up to enter their own contest. The 2007 Callander Classic did enjoy exactly the same weather as the ’06 event though, almost to the minute when the rain decided to go off … and that wasn’t until around 4.30pm! Despite the wet start and continuous rain we still managed to turn out 18 spotless cars, the surprise of the day being two old faces who turned out with their newly acquired 911 Turbos: Derek Haddow and Stuart Patterson, if

you read this guys, it was great to see you again and we all hope it’s not as long ’till the next time. Everyone who attended had a great time, including the raffle that Spud Mitchell pressured you all into parting with some dosh for, the prizes were well spread across those who participated and it looks like we should have another next year.

16th September: Selkirk Rally & Scottish Regional Concours Our East and West groups arrived only a short time apart and it was a rapid build of the club stand as the weather could best be described as damp, bordering on wet! First thing to do was get everyone together for a surprise presentation to our master chef, non other than the legendary Spud Mitchell. We (The Scottish Members) put together a one-off TIPEC apron for him, embroidered with the club logo and presented it to him before he started cooking. As usual, on went the bacon, the sausages, the black pudding etc, and all the other food he gets handed to him at the start of a club event … along with his team of girls who organise the teas, coffees and buttering of the rolls for the masses.

We set out the trophies that were up for grabs and Pete Weston volunteered to judge the concours this time since he has retired his car from this annual event. Having gone through some pretty wet hours putting all the scores together we finally had a result. My own new car was excluded from the concours … it would have probably come last anyway!

As always, a big thank you from all the Scottish Region to Brian of Brian Miller Motors Edinburgh, for once again sponsoring our concours trophies.

First of all, commemorative trophies for last year’s winners, now that they have to hand back the ‘proper’ ones. TIPEC Member of the Year 2006 Esther Stewart Most Improved Car of 2006 Alan Neilson Brian Miller Concours Commemorative Trophies for 2006 1st place: Pete Weston 2nd place: Scott McDonald 3rd place: Kevin Tocher

Then on to the 2007 awards Most Improved Car Esther Stewart, blue 924 Members of the Year (tied) Spud Mitchell & Martin Whitelaw Brian Miller Concours Winners 2007 1st Place: James McLauchlan, red 924 2nd Place: Kevin Tocher, blue 963 3rd Place: Graham Morrison, white 911

Eventually, after a hectic and wet day, the sun came out and the rain stopped just in time to get everything packed away. Unfortunately we had an accident with the club gazebo on this last outing of the season (although it’s not serious, it can be repaired!)

To all the concours winners: Keep polishing your trophies and your cars as it can only get more competitive next year with all our new members!

We’ve had a great year in the Scotland Region, and still have a couple of special weekends to go: The Scottish Weekend of the Year (SWOTY) on November 3rd–4th stopping over in Fort William, and the Christmas party overnight on December 8th at the Crerar Loch Fyne Hotel in Inverary, driving back on the 9th. Everybody’s welcome, just contact me to put your names down and get more info.

Finally, I and the region members would like to say a big thank you to Alan Neilson & Neil Fraser, your AROs, for their great support throughout the year. Well done!

Meetings are held third Tuesday of every month 8pm at The Whipping Stocks, Stocks Lane, Over Peover, Knutsford, WA16 9EX.

2007 is certainly passing us by quickly! Since my taking over as RO, quite a lot has happened.

I’d like to start by thanking all those members who have continued to support the region since I took over, including those who have kept in email contact when they have not been able to attend club nights. The bad weather this summer has prevented us from doing a lot of activities but here’s hoping 2008 will bring some sunshine.

I do still intend on holding a curry night and a dyno morning before the end of November, although I think the Speed Karting may have to be postponed until next year unless I can get all the money in quickly. If anyone would like to join in any activity please let me know as soon as possible.

As I missed the last issue of All Torque I would like to add a belated thank you to Roger & John from Unit 11 Porsche in Warrington, both Roger & John support the Cheshire & Staffs Region throughout the year and this year they sponsored our annual concours night. If you don’t already use the services of Unit 11 I would recommend them, their knowledge and expertise is 2nd to none and very competitively priced.

As to our concours night, I’d like to say well done to Nick Fowell with his stunning 993. Nick took 3rd place, Dave Watson took 2nd place with his Flatnose Turbo, and 1st place went to someone called Steve Taylor with his 944 … whoever he is?

Back up to date now, and the weather did not put a group of us off in August when we went for a forage down at Douglas Valley Breakers, who specialise

in performance and sports car salvage. They currently have over 200 Porsches, amongst all the other marques! On entering the yard we were greeted by a Ferrari F40 which had suffered an engine fire, to quote one members comments; “There is some serious till in here!”

Several hours and a number of cars down off the racks which they are stored on and we had collected together a pair of 911 rear seat belts, some 911 heavy duty bonnet gas struts, a dashboard from a 944, some 928 brake callipers and a pile of interior and exterior trim bits.

Then came the fun part: negotiation! Once prices had been haggled down everyone went away happy. After the success of this first visit we shall return in due course armed with lengthy shopping lists!

Later in August we joined up with the North West region to support a local show at Tatton Park. Both days where well supported even though it spent most of the weekend raining. Thank you to all those members who braved the weather and mud to bring their cars for the day. Some, I believe, are still cleaning the mud from under their wheel arches (finished yet Nick?)

Meetings are held first Monday of every month at The Dressers Arms, Briers Brow, Wheelton, Nr Chorley, Lancashire, PR6 8HD. When this falls ona Bank Holiday, we meet on the second Monday.

At the end of June we regularly join other mad Englishmen and women at the Symphony & Fireworks at Hoghton Tower in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice. This was well attended and although it rained a good time was had by all. We were provided with a new catchphrase “doing an Albert”; this means falling backwards into a large hole with a plateful of food (slow motion preferable). Our concourse was a success with over 40 people attending. The club award went to Dean Price and his 944. 2nd place Brenda Marginson’s 944, 3rd place went to Bob McWilliams’ 911 Carrera. Dean also won the Ford RS Owners Club Car of the Day and Peter Anderson’s lovely blue 993 won the Porsch-apart car of the day prize. Hoghton Tower show fell foul to the dreaded rain so Woodvale was eagerly awaited and didn’t disappoint. We had two glorious days of sunshine with six cars on Saturday and 11 cars on Sunday.

Our Christmas do is on 30th November at The Viking Hotel: £49 each DBB and entertainment. Please ring Brenda for details, money to be in by Sep. meeting.

Meetings are held second Wednesday of every month 7:30–8pm at The King’s Head Inn, Kingsway, Tealby, LN8 3YA.

September Not a lot to report … only three hardy soles arrived at the King’s Head in Tealby: Mike Clements, his lady and myself. I hope this is not a reflection on my abilities as an RO!

October 10 October: My day at Louth County Hospital, so I shall probably be absent.

However, Mike has agreed to arrange something for the evening.

The King’s Head is a very attractive, and supportive, pub with plenty of parking space, away from prying eyes. We meet in private so need not be disturbed, or disturb, other patrons.

On 14 October, Brod, Carolyn and the 912 will be taking part in the Norwich Union/MSA Classic Car Run, starting in York and ending in Silverstone, via Clumber Park, Donington Museum and Gaydon Heritage Museum.

November 14 November: Usual meeting night at the King’s Head. Brod and Carolyn will give a, hopefully illustrated, talk on the Norwich Union/MSA Classic Car Run and the places visited en route.

The future: The die has been cast and the cheque is in the post … Brod and Carolyn are again to take part in the 2008 Grand Tour: Cape to Cape to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. The fundraising web site (www.justgiving.com/c2c5) is up and running and ready to take your online donations. Brod’s own personal site (www.pr4motorsport.com) has been totally redesigned and expanded and will be the main conduit for Cape-to-Cape information as it arrives.

Brod and Carolyn raised just over £1,700 before and during the 2007 Tour and are hoping to exceed even that total. Commercial sponsorship deals are permitted so long as mention is made of support for Macmillan Cancer Support. All offers will be gratefully received!

Meetings are held third Tuesday of every month 7pm for food (meeting proper begins 8pm) at The Anchor Inn, Loughborough Road, Hathern, Leics, LE12 5JB.

Ashby Folville With the fine weather the place was absolutely packed. Hundreds of interesting cars and bikes on show including about a dozen Porsches. Due to the evenings drawing in now will probably not attend again until April.

PCGB National, Ragley Hall Four EMR and three SYND members met at Tamworth Services and were joined by Andy in his 996 Turbo from the Yorkshire Region. Once the absolute chaos of getting into the grounds had been overcome some time was spent talking to various tradespeople getting leads with regard to future trips out etc. All in all a good day out with lots of interesting Porsches to look at.

Donington Red Day We had ten Porsches gathered in our allocated TIPEC area with representation from EMR, SYND and Central. We had a prime location to view the racing and were once again lucky with the weather. Lots to see and a really friendly atmosphere with free access to everywhere including the pit garages where we were able to watch the mechanics work on the cars (including the Group C Porsches).

Bugattis all over the place including first sighting of a Bugatti Veron!

Upcoming events Coventry Motor Museum visit has been arranged for Saturday 27th October. Names to be taken at next meeting. Entrance is free, 15 parking spaces have been reserved for us at the front of the museum. Probably also a pub lunch afterwards. Following discussion with Simon the Christmas party/meal will take place on the evening of the December meeting (18th).

Sean Smallman has been in contact with CB and John Middleton (SYND RO) with regard to proposed TIPEC Region boundary changes. CB and JM to discuss further and forward to Sean updated membership lists. Sean to then write to individual members advising of any changes that may affect them.

The meeting concluded with a quiz which was won by Eric and Karen. Thanks to Sean for providing the questions and acting as quizmaster.

Meetings are held fourth Wednesday of every month at The Crooked Billet, Kingswood, HP18 0QJ, on the A41 between Bicester and Aylesbury.

Another busy summer of events started with our BBQ during the July club night, which was very well attended despite the poor weather, with almost 30 Porsches decorating the car park. As usual our hosts at The Crooked Billet served up an excellent selection of food.

Sheltering at the Balloon Festival

Page 32: All Torque 66

During August the highlight was the Northampton Balloon Festival where TIPEC members put on an excellent display in one of the main show rings. Sadly the poor weather meant that no balloons took to the air, but the event was so large that there was still much to see for all the family. The organisers of the event even laid on a fried breakfast for us all, so we’ll definitely be back next year!

Debbie and Bob kindly organised our Treasure Hunt in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, where members met for an old fashioned fry-up for breakfast followed by a scenic cross country route, visiting stately homes and ending up with a look around the ’planes and tanks at a local airfield. TIPEC members were out in force for the display at Turweston Airfield near Brackley, where a host of vintage aircraft flew in for the day, the highlight of which was a wonderful overhead display from a Lancaster bomber. On the ground there was much to look at including vintage cars, motorbikes and stationary engines, including a large Scalextric track in one of the hangers.

We hope to add some more events for the autumn soon but don’t forget to keep 19th December free for the Christmas meal and the morning of New Years Eve for a drive out.

Meetings are held first Tuesday of every month 8pm at The Fox, Easter Compton, B35 5RA, one mile West of M5 J17 (Cribbs Causeway).

We had a good meeting at The Fox at the beginning of September. The gap due to the holidays in August must have invigorated everyone because it was a good turnout (or perhaps it was my moaning letter!) Anyway, welcome to Dave, who was at his first meeting, complete with 911SC with custom exhaust so loud that it set the car alarms off in the car park! Also in attendance: Pete and Wendy (911), John (930), Mike (944), Nick and Rachael (928), Greg (should be 944T but he was in his truck!), Rich (Boxster), Mick (944), and your good self (944T), which meant for 8 Porsches in the car park—a sight to behold. Regrettably, an intruder had parked in the middle of a row so we couldn’t get them all in a line. Oh no!

Discussions were varied and wide-ranging. Rich was fresh from the Goodwood Revival so we relived the experience with him a few times. Nick

and Rachael have managed to get child seats for their 928, which has now become a family car! Mick has replaced the rack on his 944 which is now back on the road, and Pete

and Wendy escaped flood damage in Gloscester three months ago. John is waiting for a chemical cleaner to work its way through the 930 fuel system in the hope of releasing even more power, whilst Mike is (yet again) gallivanting off to France to enjoy the wine and pate, and Greg is trying to muster the enthusiasm to sort out the MOT and insurance on his Turbo. For my part, the engine seems to be ok after the recent turbo meltdown … time will tell.

We also talked about our July trip to the South West Festival of Motoring at Taunton Racecourse. You couldn’t have wished for a worse day: it was just like Thorseby, albeit better drained! There was a fair turnout of cars, ranging from street hatches through to our Porkers, with racing and rally cars from local clubs. The local radio station provided the sounds, with competitions and features throughout the day to keep everyone’s spirits up (it really was very wet), and the fire brigade gave a demo of how they deal with a road traffic accident with a trapped driver. Very interesting whilst sobering at the same time!

To wrap up the day, a wing walker provided a demo (Must be mad! There was only just 1k cloud base and the visibility was awful with constant drizzle). However, I guess it was all worthwhile ’cos it was all for charity!TIPEC lineup at Turweston Airfield

TIPEC lineup plus wingwalker!

Page 33: All Torque 66

Anway, back to the meeting and we agreed the following: A trip to the Porsche Picnic on the 30th of September near Reading (hope it went well). We’re going to the Le Mans Classic 11–13th July next year, so we’re going to book as soon as tickets are available. Later this autumn, we hope to visit the OPC at Cribbs Causeway (yours truly to sort out), have a Scalextric afternoon (Pete to sort out), and this year we’re going to have a Christmas lunch (on a Sunday early in December). We need to find a venue so please, any suggestions? Finally, a track day next year is very much on the cards …

Happy motoring and see you at one of the autumn meetings.

NORLON Curry Night 19th July. On a warm, clear July night the NORLON members gathered at the Bengal Paradise to make a refreshing change from the usual club gathering. A few issues including some sat-nav problems for Neil and Heather meant

few chances for pictures, but great company and excellent food more than made up for it.

Meetings are held first Friday of every month 7:30pm at The Bull Hotel, Bull Lane, Wrotham, Kent, TN15 7RF.

Next Meetings are 5th October, 2nd November & 7th December with Christmas dinner provisionally on the 8th December. November 28th is the final car outing for the year, a Halloween run being organized by Nigel.

Oh well the nights are drawing in and getting colder. After the disgusting

weather of the summer, September doesn’t seem to be too bad. Turnout over the past few months have been variable. Still, we can retire to the Lounge with a warming beer or coffee and I’m working on an evil quiz for either the October or November meeting, so get swotting.

Paul and I have started to discuss the 2008 calendar and I’ve taken note of your comments & suggestions put forward in the survey.

July Whilst on our way out shopping on a Saturday I had a phone call from Nigel Feddon seeing if we wanted to come to a BBQ at Chez Feddon on the Sunday. After a quick ring round we ended up with nine at Nigel & Pat’s on the Sunday. The food was fantastic and with a tour of the Feddon fleet of cars & bikes, I was very envious of Nigel’s massive garage. Many thanks for this Nigel & Pat, this was a great afternoon & evening and I think it was even better for being ad-hoc.

August This was a busy month and the real start of the SELNK 2007 calendar after the unfortunate cancellation of Chatham Steam Fair earlier.

We kicked off with the Fish & Chip run to Dungeness, getting decent weather which was a bonus! The run down from Maidstone services

was quite interesting as everyone played ‘follow your RO’ who’d set the TomTom Sat-Nav to shortest journey, lets just say some of the roads were very interesting, as in grass growing down the middle! By the time we got to Tenterden it was getting silly so we reverted to a more direct route. We arrived at the Brittania Inn at around 11:40 and yet again they were very welcoming, with 22 sitting down for lunch. A great meal was had by all and afterwards everyone did their own thing, some choosing to go on the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, whereas others including Becky & I climbed to the top of the lighthouse. There are fantastic views from the top although the amount of stairs came as bit of a shock!

A fortnight after this was Leeds Castle Classic Car show, this was the first event organised by Paul and unfortunately the weather was dire. Luckily the rain held off for long enough to enable the virgin TIPEC gazebo to be assembled and very smart it looked too. The turnout for this event was actually very good, with several members we don’t see very often turning out their shiny Porkers for the day. Quite a few toured the castle and then had lunch there. I’d taken the cooker and we had tea & coffee on the go all day. As the day went on the weather progressively cheered up, with Mr. Murphy ensuring that as we all left the sun came out. We’ll definitely

TIPEC South East London & North Kent Region lineup at Leeds Castle Classic Car Show

Page 35: All Torque 66

be doing this event next year and the feedback from both members and the organisers was good.

Finally for the end of August we had the Greer’s BBQ, yet again the hospitality was fantastic and this time the weather smiled for us. Quite a few sat down for an excellent nosh up with some of Rachel’s excellent puddings to finish off with.

September The SELNK meeting turnout was poor which was disappointing.

On September 15th Paul had managed to get us invited to our local Official Porsche Centre (OPC) in Tonbridge. On our arrival at around 10:30 whilst we were standing in the car park a couple arrived from PCGB Kent who have a very low mileage 924 which comes to Tonbridge every year for a service. They were being loaned a 997 C4 for the weekend as they’re seriously debating buying one.

Once in the showroom we were welcomed by John Thompson & Aaron, a vast selection of pastries were on offer, as well as a choice of drinks from the very upmarket drinks machine as well as a fridge full of cold drinks. We were given a full tour of the centre

including the workshops where a new white 997 Turbo Cab was undergoing prep and inspection. This looked stunning in white even though I could be considered to be slightly biased! Another car there was a Gembella 997, this apparently had massive electrical issues and although OPC were working on it, the warranty issues of it being after market tuned were being closely watched by Porsche GB.

We were offered 10% off of spares, with even more available on parts for older cars. We did a full tour of the

compound and I actually found myself looking closely at an ex-demo Cayman. After further consideration, I decided that maybe once my 944 is fully sorted … but not at present.

One of our other members, Jackie Mathias, was seriously discussing a Boxster and was coming back later that week to have a test drive in one.

Meetings are held first Tuesday of every month 7:30pm at The Red Lyon, Henley Road, Hurley, Berkshire, SL6 5LH.

We’ve had a few good meets recently, the last monthly meet at the Red Lyon being an excellent opportunity to see the cars in the evening sun after all the rain we’ve had this summer.

The meeting at Thames Valley Police Traffic HQ in Abingdon was superb. I’m sure everyone will agree that the Traffic Sergeant was very accomodating and only too happy to let us have an insight into how things are really done “on the other side of the fence”. The traffic car and all its electronic systems were demonstrated to us and a good Q&A session ensued. Thanks to Big John Cave for helping us with this one.

The North Kent Show was an excellent weekend other than of course the rain. The Thames Valley Gazebo made its debut outing and proved popular with visitors. The show was a great opportunity to view other clubs and marques and the Porsches attracted a lot of interest.

We’ve just returned from our regulars Al & Gina’s wedding where there were a good few Porsches in the car park, not to mention Al’s Boxster S and Gina’s 964, Wolfi. Congratulations to them and we look forward to seeing them on their return from Australia.

Now the nights are drawing in, there will be another one of the very popular ‘Pie & Pint’ nights at Sweeney & Todd, Reading during October, details of which will be sent out by e-mail shortly. Next month’s meet will be on 2nd October, probably being the last opportunity this year for a little bit of evening light.

For those of you who haven’t made it along to a monthly meet yet, we always have plenty of space reserved if people just fancy a quick visit, feel free to come along without notice and you will be guaranteed to receive a hearty welcome. Our region is family friendly too: please feel welcome to bring along your spouses and kids if you wish, they are always welcome. There is always fantastic machinery to be seen on our meets and we have seen up to 20 cars attending over the summer months.

Meetings are held second Wednesday of every month 8pm at The Shipley Bridge Inn, Antlands Lane, Burstow, RH6 9TE, on the B2037, off the A23, one mile North of Crawley M23 J10.

We have enjoyed a fantastic range of events this summer in the South East and now we are taking a short break in events before the Winter season is upon us. It feels like there

has been car shows every weekend throughout the summer. We’ve been to Brooklands, Mercedes-Benz World, Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival, Silverstone, Battle Classic, Capel Classic, as well as the monthly Sunday Goodwood Breakfast meetings (from April to October) and by the time you have read this issue the famous Goodwood Revival festival from 31 August to 2 September will be history. The Revival is set to reach new heights this year with the inaugural aeronautical attraction, namely a prestigious concour’s d’elegance for historic aircraft built up to 1966 for the ‘Freddie March Spirit of Aviation’ trophy to compliment the pre-1966 cars including some classic Porsches. We’ve also gone karting, invaded the isle of Wight for our WOTY, rallied around Silverstone and, although the weather this summer has been diabolical, the SE Region has been extremely lucky with all our events and our last event in August, the narrow boating from Broxbourne in the Lee Valley, again provided us with excellent weather and a very enjoyable day leaving our cars in the car park for a relaxing day travelling at five mph. It was great to see Nicola & Neil Relf (and Victoria) join us on the boat again after five years absence, still with his 944 Turbo. This event catered for all ages, with 83 years separating Victoria (Nicola and Neil’s daughter) aged five and Keith’s mum Doris aged 88.

The benefits that members enjoy at our Club nights is the most rewarding aspect of being a TIPEC member: hearing fantastic experiences from fellow members, advice and recommendations, latest Porsche news and motorsport events and much more. You really are missing out if you are not attending these meetings with like-minded enthusiasts. Additionally you also miss the opportunity of winning our monthly SE Region Lotto draw, now standing at £60.

We were pleased to welcome new member Ian Bain at our September meeting, just three days after Ian took possession of his first Porsche: a 968 Sport and look forward to seeing Ian at many more meetings. Ian works in Crawley and lives in Woking so has an opportunity of attending both the SE Region and Thames Valley meetings.

With the summer weather behind us, we need to establish the interest level if we are to arrange some inside events during the Autumn, such as open days at specialist independent garages and service providers (like Dent Magician and Wicked Wheels) in addition to social events like ten pin bowling before we think properly about the Christmas festivities.A real family day on the narrow boats

Special thanks to Sean Smallman for attending our August meeting to present the 2006/7 Member of the Year award to our own Keith Funnell. A well deserved award.

We hope to arrange for a group of us to visit MPH 07 at Earls Court on 1st–4th November, let us know if any other regions are planning to attend this, we could all meet up.

Meetings are held fourth Tuesday of every month at The Wheatsheaf Inn, Braishfield Road, Braishfield, Romsey, Hampshire, SO51 0QE.

The monthly meetings continue to be well attended, with lively discussions about everything from cars to food and what future events we may plan. It is looking increasingly likely that we will have a weekend away sometime in the spring, probably in Devon. The Christmas meal is now booked for Friday the 7th December at The Hunters Inn, Swanmore. This as usual will be in conjunction with the TR Drivers club; this is limited to 36 places total and is usually fully subscribed, so if you wish to go let me know ASAP.

We attended the Broadlands Classic Car Show on the Sunday of the August bank holiday, I think everyone was a little apprehensive about the weather,

as the summer had been pretty poor up till then, but as everyone met up at the M27 services, the sun shone brightly, and did so for the rest of the day. It was a good job we took a couple of gazebos as the sun was really beating down by mid afternoon. We managed to put on a good show with everything from Simon’s lovely yellow Boxster S to Brian’s nice 924S and pretty much everything in between, we nearly managed a 928 but unfortunately Mark’s car broke the power steering belt the day before … but he still managed to make it in a nice 944 Turbo, the rest of the attendees and their cars are listed below the photo. My thanks to all those that attended and made a great effort with their cars looking really good. Everyone had a great day and we will be attending next year with more cars and the Southern region helping out.

A few of us went along to the Southern Region BBQ held on Sunday 23rd September and hosted by Jon Mitchell at his workshop, this turned out to be a very informative and enjoyable afternoon for all those that attended, thanks to Jon and his wife for the hospitality and Gordon & Dek for their hard work in organising it.

And the list of cars (from left to right) is: Simon’s Boxster S, Gary’s 993 C4, Dave’s 968, Mark’s 944 Turbo, Trevor’s

944S, Neil’s 944 Turbo, Brian’s 924S, Steve’s 911 Targa and finally My 911 Turbo. All lined up in date order, oldest to youngest!

Meetings are held first Tuesday of every month 7:30pm at The True Lovers Knot Pub, Tarrant Keyneston, Nr Blandford Forum, Dorset, DT11 9JG.

The Southern region continues to grow and gather members. After the great day out at Poole quay and following the successful, if damp, fun day our next event, other than monthly meets, was a BBQ at the new premises of Jon Mitchell, in Christchurch. Jon is a TIPEC technical advisor and a bit of a legend amongst 944 fans, he is the man who builds 3.2l 944 turbos that are very very quick indeed.

The BBQ was scheduled for the first Sunday in September, but due to unforeseen circumstances had to be cancelled and was instead held on the 23rd. Attendance was good despite the

burnt food and the weather being a bit parkier than earlier in the month. Thank you to Jon, Julie and sons, James, and all the staff at the garage who worked as hard as they could to ensure the day was successful. Again another big thanks to Jon & Julie who paid for the whole event. Also a big big thank you to Dekkie who made sure I wasn’t a quivering wreck for the 24 hours before the event and was invaluable in her support!

We held a very informal concours. On the day a non-TIPEC car got the first prize, but I live in hope that the winner will join.

1st prize Chris Pritchard in his 993 was the choice of the 3 lady judges, I am sure it was the car that won not the man (although?)

Most loved car Alec Hopley with his white 944 was awarded the most loved car prize, he brings the car to every meet, and it is obviously his baby.

Visitor’s choice Ian Rollet, a regular visitor to Southern events from Wessex region, won this with his lovely 3.2 Carrera.

Well done to all of them and thankyou to the ladies who

judged the concours for us.

Jon is still available to answer technical queries and can be contacted on 0120 248 8800 or you can email him via his website: www.jmgarage.com

Club nights happen on the first Tuesday of every month, nothing formal just a beer, some tyre kicking and chat. Come along and feel free to make suggestions of things you would like the region to do. The pub has good car parking. The pub also has good food, both restaurant and bar menu are available. The landlord is a nice guy and is more than pleased to have us there!

Our next club night is on the 6th November: I will be there to kick things off and I will buy the first person there a pint! Look forward to seeing you all.

Meetings are held second Sunday of every month 12:30–3pm at The Winds of Change, South Petherwin, Nr Launceston, Cornwall, PL15 7LP. Please contact Steve in advance so that he can advise the restaurant of attendee numbers.

Over the summer the meetings have been more than a little quiet, the next meetings particularly will benefit from as many folks coming along as possible. There is always a lighter, less expensive, bar menu as well as the restaurant. Discussions and ideas for the coming season, meetings and events for 2008 can then take place. But you need to be there to be part of your region and help with thoughts, planning and decision process for the coming year! I already have a number of driving days out for coffee/lunch/cream teas concocted for those who would like to do a half day or full day Sunday run and see parts of Cornwall and Devon you might not otherwise notice … but like most event attendance, to make them viable we need to have folks interested in taking part to take the Region forward!

Primed and ready for the concours judging
