COMMUNITY REPORT
2017-2018
ALL WITH THE SAME HEART
A year of generosity
Once again this year, the Foundation has distinguished itself through its commitment to the Montfort Hospital and its patients. Several new activities were organized by various communities.
Among our achievements over the past year was the continuation of the “For You, Sweet Heart” fundraising campaign, which enabled Montfort to acquire a CT Scanner with a specialized cardiac
module. Mission accomplished. Many thanks.
But our work is never done. The challenges are great, and the needs are even greater. This is what motivates us to continue, all with the same heart. Moreover, the construction of the new Orléans Health Hub, which is on the horizon, will be the subject of our next targeted fundraising campaign. Nevertheless, let us use the present moment to reassess our priorities and strengthen our fundraising strategies. In point of fact, the Foundation is developing a solid new strategic plan that will guide us through 2021.
Giving, as we know, is not only an act of charity, but also a civic gesture. Each year, more and more committed donors participate in our activities and make the Montfort Foundation their charity of choice.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Foundation team, thank you for your generous donations which allows our hospital to continue to offer exemplary person-centred care in such a warm-hearted community.

AT A GLANCE The “For You, Sweet Heart” campaign enabled Montfort to acquire a CT Scanner with a specialized cardiac module, which has already been used to save lives. In service since November 2, 2017, this state-of-the-art equipment is an important addition to our teaching hospital services.
The “For You, Sweet Heart” fundraising campaign that concluded on December 31, 2017 was a wonderful achievement. Chaired by well-known lawyer and philanthropist Lawrence Greenspon, the campaign was very successful and highly publicized.
CT SCANNER WITH CARDIAC MODULE AND ITS DONORSOn February 28th, the Foundation officially unveiled its Donor Wall of Recognition, located at the entrance of the hospital’s CT Unit. The special event took place in the presence of donors who had made major gifts to the “For You, Sweet Heart” campaign. Recognition plaques are also displayed in the waiting room where the new CT Scanner is housed to honour the generosity and commitment of our donors.

TESTIMONIALS“One morning, just like any other morning, I was getting ready to go to the gym. I felt dizzy so I checked
my blood sugar level only to find that the discomfort was not related to my diabetes. Suddenly, I passed out. Fortunately, my son was there and he called 911. Because I live nearby in Orléans, I was transported to the Montfort Hospital. I had a series of tests, including an electrocardiogram. With the results in hand, a Cardiologist told me that my heart was very weak for someone my young age. I was then referred to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute for angiography and, following more
alarming results, I was told that I needed to undergo an angioplasty to unblock my veins.
After three months of waiting and anxiety, the procedure was performed. The Cardiologists told me all my arteries were 70 percent blocked. I thought I was going to die, that I didn’t have much longer to live. I
chose the Montfort Hospital—my Hospital—for cardiac rehabilitation. I met some extraordinary people and some of the most competent, caring and professional staff. They taught me so much about my condition.
Less than a year later, my only brother, Gilles, died of cardiac arrest at the age of 57. The pathologist’s report confirmed that we shared the same genetic disease.
As a patient, donor and Board Trustee of the Montfort Hospital Foundation, I am very grateful that this vital equipment is finally available for future patients who find themselves in a similar situation.”
- Chantal Mercier, Board Trustee in 2017–2018 and grateful patient
”For Kevin Ciesielski, the new device changed his life. The 45-year-old Ottawa man appeared physically fit, but was experiencing atypical symptoms—shortness of breath and chest pain that several tests had failed to elucidate. While a patient at Montfort, images taken by the new CT Scanner retransmitted by the cardiac module revealed a serious blockage of the arteries. Kevin was immediately transferred to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute for a triple bypass. Today, he enjoys the life he owes, in part, to the CT Scanner.”
- Kevin Ciesielski, grateful patient
“I was admitted to the Montfort Emergency Department around
noon on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, with a knee injury. I would like to congratulate the staff for the outstanding care I received. As soon as I arrived,
I felt that I was in good hands and the whole process was absolutely
exceptional. I would like to sincerely thank the doctors and all the nursing staff. I am lucky to have found myself at Montfort and to have received such a level of care. Thank you very much.”
- Jeff MacDonald, grateful patient
“Recently, at Montfort, I had to undergo surgery after a colonoscopy revealed the presence of a malignant tumour, meaning cancerous, of the colon. Thanks to the prompt action and excellent care of Dr. Benoît St-Jean, I am doing much better. I want to express my gratitude and thank Dr. St-Jean and his excellent team.”

SCOTIABANK DONATES $250,000 IN SUPPORT OF THE MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM
Mindfulness embraces being present in the moment, being attuned to emotions, body sensations, relationships, communication, or every day occurrences. The technique is at the heart of rehabilitation as a complementary and alternative therapeutic approach. Mindfulness meditation has a positive effect on psychological well-being, which extends beyond a daily practice of meditation. Numerous research papers point to mindfulness interventions as a means of reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, chronic pain and improving well-being and quality of life. Thanks to Scotiabank’s generous donation, the mindfulness process has been integrated on the Mental Health Unit and will be pursued in the Outpatient Department upon transfer of the patient.

The Orléans Health Hub project involves the construction of a new centre at the intersection of Mer Bleue Road and Brian Coburn Boulevard. The Hub will bring together several health care and community service partner organizations to address client needs through a comprehensive service delivery model:
• Needs-based ambulatory care program
• Diagnostic Imaging
• Geriatric wellness and support services
• Mental health and wellness services
• Rehabilitative care
This prototype project is the first of its kind in Ontario and flows from the government’s commitment to support community hubs and help Ontarians in their daily lives by facilitating access to multiple services under one roof in their community.
The Montfort Hospital plays a key role in the Hub with the following partners: Bruyère Continuing Care, Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Geriatric Psychiatry Community Services of Ottawa, Champlain Local Health Integration Network, Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre, Ottawa Youth Services Bureau and Ottawa Public Health. From newborns to seniors, everyone will be able to consult for mental health, physical health, prevention and rehabilitation problems.
The Montfort Foundation will play a leading role and will soon launch a fundraising campaign to support this innovative project.
