YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING
Thank you to all who attended and helped at the Soup Supper and Re-Wards Day! We served 329 people.
The Silent Auction brought $1,362.00. A special thank you to all the clubs and volunteers who donated an
item to the Silent Auction. Also thank you to the members and leaders of the Mississippi Mad Scientists and
Ludlow Future Farmers 4-H Clubs for their help. Thank you to the 4-H County Council members! Please be
sure to send a ‘Thank You’ to the buyer of your basket. Names and address are on club shelves.
We will be using the 4-H Online system for re-enrollment into the Allamakee County 4-H Program for the
2017-2018 4-H year. You are able to re-enroll now.

All 4-H members are welcome to attend the ‘Youth Leadership Training’ on Saturday, December 2 from 9-
11:00 AM at the Allamakee County Extension Office. This hands-on, interactive training is for 4-H club offic-
ers and leaders to learn more about club officer roles and leadership skills! This training is free to attend.
Training is being provided by the University of Iowa and Iowa State University Collegiate 4-H. Please register
by November 28 to Morgan at [email protected] or 563-568-6345. See Page 4 for more information.
STATE RECOGNITION OPPORTUNITIES You deserve to be recognized for your hard work and have some fun too! There are many opportunities for
recognition awards or to represent Iowa on the state and national level for youth in 9-12 grades. These op-
portunities include National 4-H Conference, National 4-H Congress, State 4-H Council, Iowa and State 4-H
Project Awards. Learn more about applying for these opportunities at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/
recognition-opportunities. Online applications are due to the State 4-H Office by February 1. Interviews will
be held on Saturday, March 24 at Iowa State University in Ames. If you are interested in applying please con-
tact Morgan.
4-H COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS Students pursuing higher education are encouraged to complete a 4-H scholarship application. More than
90 scholarships totaling nearly $100,000 will be awarded to 4-H’ers attending a university, private college, or
community college in Iowa with scholarships of $500-$3,200. Scholarship applications are due to the State

In addition to the state scholarships, The Allamakee 4-H Scholarship Committee will award scholarships with
a minimum value of $250. This scholarship requires applicants to submit an application and two letters of

4-H OPPORTUNITIES
UPCOMING: 2018 4-H APPAREL ORDERS We order new county t-shirts on a two year rotation, 2018 is a year for new t-shirts! We are
looking for the next apparel design artist to create a new county 4-H design for 2018. All de-
sign ideas must be submitted by Monday, January 29 to the Extension Office. You may hand
draw or use digital designs. An online studio you may find helpful is:

All artwork must be original and should include the 4-H clover and/or the word 4-H
in their entirety. See page 10-12 in https://nifa.usda.gov/sites/default/files/
resource/4-H%20Name%20and%20Emblem%20User%20Guide%202014.pdf for
more information on using the 4-H emblem and 4-H name. Designs should not be
larger than 8.5”x11” and should have no more than two colors. The winner will re-
ceive their design on a t-shirt for free and recognition in the newsletter. Good

QUILTS OF VALOR SEWING DAY
Join Diana Davison on Saturday, December 9 from 10:30 AM—1:30 PM at
Queen Jean Quilting, 708 2nd Ave NW, Waukon, for a Quilts of Valor Sewing
Day. Learn about Quilts of Valor and sewing techniques. Beginner or advanced,
all 4-H’ers are welcome. If you have a sewing machine feel free to bring it.

WE WANT YOUR DESIGNS!
NATIONAL 4-H YOUTH SUMMIT FOR HEALTHY LIVING The National 4-H is hosting a four day conference for high school youth on
Healthy Living, February 16-19 at the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy
Chase, Maryland. This event will develop youth knowledge and skills in address-
ing today’s health related issues including nutrition education, physical fitness,
wellness, and emotional wellbeing. Youth will participate in a variety of workshops,
learn from professionals in these related fields, and create action plans to imple-
ment projects to promote healthy living back home in their communities. Deadline
to Apply is December 8, 2017. A limited number of youth will be selected for this
opportunity and will be responsible for a portion of their trip expenses ($500).

Spring 2018 DuPont Pioneer Seed Grant for Iowa 4-H Club Community Improvement Projects are now avail-
able. Objective of these grants is to stimulate local 4-H clubs in Iowa to plan and carry out community im-
provement activities by providing "seed money" needed to make the projects successful. Applications are due
in County Extension and Outreach Offices by January 16, 2018 and should then be forwarded to the State

4-H OPPORTUNITIES
NEW MEMBER NIGHT All new 4-H members and families are invited to attend the New Member Night on Tuesday, January 9,
2018, 6:00 PM to learn about all 4-H has to offer! This evening is set aside for families and 4-H’ers to come
together to explore, ask, and dream about their future 4-H experience! We will provide you with general 4-H
information and equip you with information to start thinking about potential fair projects. We will host a ‘Part
Two’ New Member Night in the spring specifically designed to prepare new members for the Fair. Join us for
an evening of fun, friends, education, exploration, and 4-H! Please RSVP by January 3, 2018 to Morgan

JOANN FABRICS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH 4-H
Customers can get a free 4-H Reward Card that will allow them to receive a 15% discount on their total in-
store and online purchases every day! A minimum of 2.5% goes back to 4-H as a donation. 30% of the dona-
tion goes to the National 4-H Council and 70% goes to the State 4-H Program. For more information visit

WINTER PROJECT WORKSHOP Allamakee County 4-H members in grades 4-12 are invited to
participate in a Winter Project Workshop, Thursday, Decem-
ber 28 from 9:00 AM—12:00 PM. We will spend the morning
making pallet crafts, learning about design elements and art
principles, and making new friends. 4-H’ers will leave with a
completed 4-H exhibit! Morning snacks will be provided.
Cost: $25. Youth must be enrolled in 4HOnline for the 2017-18 4-H year prior to attending. Please see last
page of Newsletter for the Registration Form or stop into the Extension Office to pick one up. Register by De-
cember 18. Open to the first 15 youth to register.

2018 FAIR THEME
Preparations have started for the 2018 Allamakee County Fair! You can also start preparations on booth
decorating ideas. The 2018 theme is: “Your Passport to Adventure”

BEEF WEIGH-IN The 4-H/FFA Beef Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, December 16 from 10:00 AM –12:00 PM at the Northeast Iowa
Sales Commission. Calves that need to be weighed, tagged, and identified include market steers, market heifers, and
dairy beef steers. Each person may identify a maximum of 6 calves. Calves must be a minimum of 350 pounds at weigh-
in. Dairy beef should weigh about 800 pounds.
Retinal Imaging for the Iowa State Fair and AKSARBEN will be available for Allamakee County 4-H youth during our
counties beef weigh in. Please contact us at 563-568-6345 if you will be retinal imaging your animals.
In case of inclement weather listen to KNEI 103.5, a snow date of Saturday, December 23 has been set.
USDA YOUTH LOANS The Farm Service Agency has the USDA Youth Loan Program available for any 4-H/FFA members, ages 10-21 years of
age, and looking for help to finance their projects. Applications and brochures can be picked up at the Extension Office
or contact your local FSA office 563-382-2255.
LIVESTOCK REMINDERS
All 4-H members who weigh in market animals will need to confirm data entered by the county Extension staff.
The market beef deadline to do this is January 31. A ‘how to’ sheet will be available at the weigh ins, or contact
the Extension Office for help.
LEADERS: UPCOMING DEADLINES AND REMINDERS As club activities are planned, please turn driver’s names and last 5 digits of social security number into the
Extension Office a minimum of 3 weeks prior to scheduled events so paperwork can be sent to those who will be
transporting youth. This is to assure everyone is properly screened.
If you are planning a club activity that is NOT documented in your club program, please remember to contact the
Extension Office about insurance coverage for special activities. Liability activity forms can be found on our web-
site www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/4h under the Leader heading.
Program Books — Please be working on your 2017-18 Program Books with your officers. When working on Pro-
gram Books, please be sure to refer to Participation Policy Guidelines along with the Financial Guidelines. If you
would like and electronic copy sent to you please contact Morgan. These are due November 30.
Club Visits — As you are working on your Club Program Books if you see a month that you would like Morgan to at-
tend and bring an activity for the youth, please contact her soon to get that date on her calendar.
Volunteers Needed —We are looking for adults and high school youth to help with our 4-H program including but
not limited to; afterschool programming, County Council and Saturday Clover Kids. Or, if you know of an adult who is
interested in becoming a leader of a new 4-H project club let us know! If you have an idea for a new project club or
are interested in volunteering in an existing 4-H program, please contact the Extension Office. This is a great oppor-
tunity to share the generosity and independence you have learned through your 4-H experiences.
New Volunteer Training — The Regional New Volunteer Training is scheduled for Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the
Calmar Dairy Center from 9:30 AM– 12:30 PM. Registration information is available here: http://form.jotform.com/

The Allamakee County Fair Board is in the initial planning stages of building a new rabbit/poultry barn at the fairgrounds.
If clubs are interested in donating initial seed money for this project, please contact the Extension Office.

Winter Project Workshop: Pallet Crafts
Allamakee County 4-H members in grades 4-12 are invited to participate in a Winter Project (Visual Arts) Workshop. We will spend the morning making pallet crafts, learn-
ing about design elements and art principles, and making new friends. 4-H’ers will leave with a completed 4-H exhibit! Morning snacks will be provided.
If youth have personal items they would like to add to their pallets, please feel free to bring them. Feel free to come with a few ideas for your project.
Cost: $25*
