ur namesake is Ebenezer Allen. Which is probably the second Ebenezer you’ve ever heard of.

THE HISTORY OF ALLEN

Allen’s history dates back to before the 1800s when the region was inhabited by Caddo and Comanche Indian tribes who eventually migrated west as European immigrants began arriving in the 1840s.

The original township of Allen was established by the Houston and Texas Central Railroad in 1872 and named for Ebenezer Allen, a state politician and railroad promoter. Railroads have played an integral part in Allen’s history; in fact, the first train robbery in Texas took place in Allen on February 22, 1878, when Sam Bass and his associates pillaged the train.

Allen is also home to what is thought to be the last remaining stone dam in the U.S., which was once used as a water station for the H&TC railway. The Texas Historical Commission recognizes the remaining site – which includes the dam and pump house and water tower foundations – as a State Archaeological Landmark.
