Alley Theatre Partner School Program

We invite you to apply for the Alley Theatre PARTNER SCHOOL PROGRAM. This two-year partnership

between the Alley Theatre and your school will create exemplary educational opportunities for both drama

and English classes. PSP is an excellent opportunity to support your TEKS objectives and expand the

resources at your fingertips to reach your English and theatre goals.

THE ALLEY THEATRE PARTNER SCHOOL PROGRAM IS:

A partnership between classroom teachers and the Alley Theatre and its Teaching Artists for school-day

instruction in theatre that is integrated with existing theatre and humanities TEKS and classes

An opportunity for school administration and faculty to pilot and develop sustainable arts education

models in the classroom

Curriculum enrichment for students to experience active learning that will challenge them to engage

with aspects of theatre and humanities including: theatre history, Shakespeare, Greeks, acting,

playwriting, theatrical performance, and poetry

We consider all of our partnership teachers experts in their field. It is our place to augment effective teaching practice with an added professional voice, bringing one-of-a-kind curriculum into classrooms and exposing schools to one of the leading resident theatre companies in the United States. Added to this is an expanded understanding of theatre as a professional career.

The Alley only maintains 15 Partner Schools at a time. Therefore, a limited number of partnerships are available each year. This exclusive opportunity provides Partner Schools with up to 100 hours of in-school workshops and residencies each year for a significantly reduced rate. As a partner, your school will also have access to free and discounted tickets to select student night performances, exclusive discounts on school tours and additional residency hours, and priority notification for special Alley events and opportunities for students.

The Alley Theatre is a Tony Award winning and nationally recognized performing arts company. The Alley has brought

productions to Broadway, 40 American cities, including New York’s Lincoln Center, and internationally to Berlin, Paris,

and St. Petersburg throughout its 69-year history.

In addition to creative excellence and instilling a passion for theatre in its audience, education is at the core of the

Alley’s values. Applied Theatre at the Alley (Alley Education & Community Engagement) is a national driving force for

innovative arts education. It pioneers arts integration, cultivates the next generation of theatre artists, and fosters

your school to be considered for a partnership. Feel free to attach additional pages.

What has motivated your school to apply to become an Alley Theatre Partner School?

How would the Alley Partner School Program benefit your students, teachers, and community?

In what ways has your school been engaged with Alley Partner School activities (Slam Poets, Playwriting 360°, student matinees, etc.)?

Please identify the programs you believe would have the most impact on your students and school, and explain the reasons why. What is your school’s current vision for arts education? Please read through each point carefully and initial after each line to indicate you have read and understand the following guidelines. These

guidelines entail the responsibilities of the partner school and Alley Theatre. All guidelines must be initialed in order to complete the partnership application.

SCHEDULING

Please check your school’s master calendar for testing dates, early dismissals, school events, or any other conflicts before submitting scheduling requests. When submitting request, be sure to provide a school calendar and bell schedule Residency and workshop requests may be submitted anytime prior to the first day of school. We will do our best to accommodate your request; however we cannot guarantee availability. Classes may be schedule to begin as early as the second week of school. Please respond to emails regarding residency and workshop scheduling within 24 hours of receiving them. Please notify the Alley In-School Programs Manager of any conflicts as early as possible. Rescheduling is based on teaching artist availability. Unused hours may not be carried over to the following year. Additional hours apply to Slam Poetry, Backstory 360°, and Playwriting 360° because of the amount of hours required outside of the classroom by teaching artists and administration. Partnership hours will be applied for special curriculum requests. CANCELLATIONS Once your residencies are scheduled, Alley teaching artists receive individual contracts for each residency. They are not salaried employees. Canceling a residency results in the loss of a teaching artist’s compensation. Day-of cancellations of a full residency will result in the loss of hours and a fine of $200 to compensate the teaching artist for lost time, except in cases of extenuating circumstances that will be examined case-by-case. If a teaching artist is unable to complete a residency and a suitable substitute is not available, the school will retain the unused hours. IN THE CLASSROOM Teachers are required to be in the classroom during all residency classes. We encourage classroom teachers to actively participate in workshop activities. Not only does this help with classroom management, but we have found that students become more invested when their teacher is learning along side them. Please notify your Teaching Artist and the In-School Programs Manager immediately if you are absent. We have found that classroom behavior becomes more challenging in the presence of a substitute. If a teaching artists arrives and the regular classroom teacher is absent, they reserve the right to cancel class and reschedule. A teaching artist is a guest in the classroom. We expect students to fully participate and demonstrate respectful behavior. The teaching artist reserves the right to discontinue a workshop if students behavior is disruptive and disrespectful.
