ABOUT THE ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE

OVERVIEW OF THE 2020-2021 SEASON

OUR EDUCATIONAL GOALS

promoting the French language in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Alliance Française consists of five campuses: Spadina (downtown), North York, Markham, Mississauga and Oakville.

Established in Toronto in 1902, Alliance Française Toronto is a Canadian non-profit offering a wide variety of French-as-a-second-language classes to public service employees, companies and individuals (children, teenagers and adults at all levels). It also offers certifications recognized by the French and Canadian governments. AFT has demonstrated its potential and vitality by becoming the largest French language school in Canada. With over 7000 students, it is the first Alliance in North America and the 6th in the world.

As a disseminator of francophone cultures, AFT engages with audiences in the GTA each year to offer a daring cultural program that highlights the diversity and richness of francophone artists.

AFT also occupies a unique spot in the Toronto art scene, given its multidisciplinary cultural program in French. With more than 100 events and 150 artists per year, Alliance Française Toronto has become an indispensable cultural hub for the Francophonie. In fact, Alliance Française has been an integral part of the cultural life of Toronto for well over 100 years, letting both francophones and francophiles quench their thirst for artistic and linguistic discovery.

We are living in a singular time, marked by the pandemic and by social movements that are reminding us of the importance of building bridges and overcoming our differences. To meet this challenge, Alliance Française Toronto has had to reinvent itself, accomplishing this goal by drawing on resources it had in reserve.

True to its vision of excellence in promoting francophone cultures and official bilingualism in the Greater Toronto Area, the Alliance has augmented its educational and cultural offerings by embracing online content. It goes to show that it is always possible to learn and have fun in French, and that it is possible, too, to design a virtual space conducive to intercultural exchange – despite the health barriers and apprehensions that could keep us apart. Circumstances permitting, the Toronto campuses will remain open for those who still prefer the human warmth that not even a two-metre gap can dispel.

I hope the friends of the Alliance will make the most of the diverse activities planned by our team, who, more than ever, have gone above and beyond to better serve the community.I wish everyone a fruitful year of learning, new discoveries and meaningful encounters — despite the unusual situation.

If times change even in normal circumstances, what can we say about the 2020–2021 season?! This season will of course be different, filled with uncertainty but also with surprises. We like to believe that by staying positive, we will succeed.

So get ready to laugh with the Franco-Ontarian trio Les chiclettes or with the Quebec performance group La fille du Laitier. Next, we will transport you with Baroque music by the Ensemble Amarillis and with the velvet voice of the French singer, Pomme ; we will also host the great jazz artist Stephane Wrembel (to our immense delight).

The theatre will present the Caravague company and its play Mad Men chez Molière, and also the Toronto company Corpus and its Flock of Flyers. Children will not be left out, with the following plays on offer: Old Man and the River, A New World with the Œil theatre, and Echoing Crest by Les Chemins Errants company.

The seventh art will be back, online and in-house, so you can discover great classics, new screenings and cult comedies… And finally, art will enrich our spaces with beautiful exhibits, starting with Machine à bulles, which will plunge us into the universe of the comic book.

We’ll say no more! This 2020–2021 season will be beautiful, lively, discerning and triumphant as we offer you escapes through art. We need them!

Continue to offer quality teaching to our students, at all ages and levels. Because it’s never too early or too late to learn French, our school welcomes students starting from the age of 5 and will continue to be a valued meeting place for our seniors.

Offer our community optimal conditions for learning French, so that it is an attractive and enriching experience both educationally and culturally. Thanks to exceptional support from the French and Canadian governments, new resources and materials will be made available to our student community starting in the fall of 2020.

Support our teachers in evolving their practices while facing the challenges of distance learning. To help them make this technological transition, we provided over 300 hours of training during the lockdown, so they would have the pedagogical and technological resources necessary to create a dynamic and interactive online learning experience. We will continue this investment in our teachers.

OUR EDUCATIONAL GOALS

CONTINUITY OF CLASSES AT ALLIANCE CAMPUSES In strict compliance with public health measures, our campuses are opening their doors to young students, starting at 5 years old, and also to adults, while respecting the distancing measures necessary for eve-ryone’s safety. This year, our classes will be limited to 5 participants per group.

THE RANGE OF ONLINE CLASSES General courses, professional French training, conversation workshops or literature courses… we offer the same variety in our online format as we offer to on-campus students. Each online class is limited to groups of 6 to 10, according to age and class type. We also offer tailor-made training: private lessons and training for business.

THE AF ECOSYSTEM When students enroll at Alliance Française, they’re looking for a tangible expe-rience of France and the Francophonie. This is exactly what we aim to provide. We have created a francophone ecosystem inside which personal enrichment and language learning go perfectly in hand.

MAKING FRENCH A CAREER ASSET In a globalized context, having a mastery of French is highly prized in many sectors, including diplomacy, tourism, healthcare, fashion and luxury goods and services. For students wishing to make French a career asset, we offer distance-learning French courses designed to help you communicate better, both orally and in writing, in everyday professional situations.

SALUT   !

AANJALINSTUDENT AT AFT

LUIS AGUILARSTUDENT AT AFT

I have many friends who are surprised to hear me speak French. When I explain to them that I am taking courses at Alliance, they want to join me to share this experience.

At every lesson in my Alliance Française courses, I’m constantly learning something new about the French language. Plus, the professors encourage me to go beyond my limits.

For me, a language is a window into another culture. When I speak a language, I understand its culture differently. That’s why I came back to learn French. Did I have to do that? No. It was by choice. I see the world differently because of that.

I came here because my mother has likewise been taking courses at Alliance Française for 4 years. She recommended it to me as a very good school. I really like it here. I get along with the students and the teachers and I enjoy the environment at AF: it is very positive, friendly and rewarding.

NAZILA TAHERI STUDENT AT AFT

I’ve been very encouraged at Alliance. All my teachers have told me that I have great aptitude and that I should continue. That really encourages me to carry on, so it has been a really good experience with my teachers.

JOSEPH BIGIOMEMBER AND SPECTATOR

The theater at Alliance Française is a unique place where diverse programs, wonderfully presented, mix with whether it be music; from classical to francophone music and the energetic music of the world, conferences on diverse topics, danses, cinema on Thursdays, guided tours of the Musée d’Orsay. Obviously this is not all done magically. It’s a fully charged job that requires creativity and logistics, two fields in which the cultural team at Alliance excel and offer us, each week, performances of our choice.

NICOLETA NEGRUVOLUNTEER & SPECTATOR

For me, Alliance Française de Toronto represents a meeting with wonder, with a sublime selection of films, theater performances, concerts and conferences… The program has transported me to the francophone world and culture, has made me live through intense emotions and has given me subject matter to reflect upon. I want to thank the excellent team at AFT for all these moments of joy and I wish you lots of success for your new season!
