Dear friends of Alliance française, After a mid-year season of reflection and evaluation, we are now deep into the second half of 2013 and picking up the pace with a lively programme of activities. Alliance Française has long been a supporter of the fashion industry in Tanzania – many emerging designers have used our space to showcase their work in fashion shows. However, these two months bring a notable collaboration of a rather different kind. The first-ever Fashion Week Zanzibar will take place on the island in October, and Alliance Française is glad to take part in activities leading up to the big occasion. The event organisers are holding the model casting and training, as well as the press conference, at our grounds in Dar es Salaam. Another great collaboration brings you an experience in quality Swahili Hip-Hop and artwork. Asar Entertainment Company, the Swiss Embassy and Alliance Française are coming together to hold the 2nd Edition of the Swahili Hip-Hop Summit. Still on the music front, Alliance Française and Triniti will organise a concert featuring Gaiden and Yoshi, Hip-Hop artists from France.
The Time 2 Dance festival, formerly known as Visa 2 Dance, has the support of major cultural institutions in Dar this year. It will open at Alliance Francaise and then travel to the Goethe-Institut, the Indian Cultural Centre and finally close at Nafasi Art Space. Site-specific

performances will take place in Kariakoo and at the Ubungo bus station. It is all about taking dance out to the communities. New exhibitions also find a host in Alliance. Art lovers can view the latest creations by Paul Ndunguru and Jan van Esch. Alliance Française being a place of experimentation, we will open our doors to a new project called “Confinement”: 4 walls, 4 artists, Enclosed for 48 hours. Discover the fruit of their work on the 22nd of October. As for our regular events, the dynamic and multicultural Barazani event goes on, and fans of the monthly music quiz night will test their knowledge of international music in September and African music in October. Our twice-monthly Friday night movie sessions continue, and as always we bring you an alternative selection of international and francophone films. Not to leave out the little ones, we are also happy to introduce cinema sessions for children on the last Saturday of every month. For those of you looking for a more interactive experience, consider a physical activity with a cultural twist. If dance is your kind of workout, set aside your Monday nights for Salsa sessions at the restaurant “Le Bistrot” or Capoeira sessions in the exhibition hall. A très bientôt,

Short(s) of AfricaPart II
In September, Alliance française keeps on with the projection of African short movies in partnership with the Embassy of Belgium in Tanzania and Africalia Belgium. « Short(s) of Africa » film collection drew everyone’s attention during the Afrique Taille XL festival in Belgium. Made among creative talents from all over Western Africa, the selection is well diversified. Poetic, funny or moving yet always relevant, they reflect the diversity of African cinematographic creation. They are also part of a series of DVD issued by Africalia Belgium to offer African film-makers the place they deserve.

It is important for me and for my professional career to get a chance to interact with people. I do that by means of paintings, comics, illustration, sculpture as well as music. That is the only way to express myself and to connect to society.Because it is difficult to measure how art contributes to society, some people tend to believe that it is not essential for a healthy society. However, I have learned during the past twenty years of working experience as an artist that art can build identities, invoke feelings of freedom, create new narratives and stories, make people aware and reflect upon their situation and strengthen peace among peoples.
I am always fascinated with having narrative stories in my Art works that inspire to open the room for the viewers and create more stories out of it. This selection of works are example of narratives in painting.Paul Ndunguru

Wednesday 18th September 2013
Hoko Roro’ is a band formed by Samuel Hokororo (1990). Samuel is a young Tanzanian artist from Temeke, Dar es Salaam. For Samuel music and singing was a part of growing up, at home, school and in church. From the age of eight years old, Samuel spent most of his youth on the streets, returning from time to time to his grand parents’ house. In 2003 he was taken into the Tukoleni youth center. It was here that he got his first real music lessons. In 2006 he went to the Dogodogo center – a center for street children - and received training in theatre, dance and music. It was here that he learned to play the guitar. Samuel excelled as a student and since he left the Dogodogo center in 2008 he has been working full time in a music, dance and theatre.
Samuel and ‘Hoko Roro’ compose, create and arrange their own music. Samuel writes mostly in his native tongue, Kiswahili, with a smattering of English. Hoko Roro music can be best described as Acoustic African Contemporary, with beautifully interwoven free flowing rhythms, and very personal and emotional lyrical content. The lyrical content is emphasized and supported by Samuels impressive vocal range, using low timbres, high notes, and varying dynamics to put stress on his lyrics and rhythms, while the percussionist add depth and complexity, bringing in a wealth of experience to the music, combining styles and rhythms from different parts of the country, and the world.

Wednesday 18th September 2013
Leo Mkanyia’s music has been described by Biyi Adepegba, Art Director of Joyful Noise Recordings UK and the London African Music Festival as “blues which recalls the wonder of the King of African Blues Ali Farka Toure”. As a solo artist Leo has created his own modern style, which he calls Swahili Blues.
Leo began to play professionally at 18. He worked as a peer educator, singing songs on the street to educate people on HIV and AIDS, and in four different bands. He regularly performs around Tanzania, solo and with band. He worked previously as a French teacher; today he teaches guitar to private students and is studying in order to travel with his music overseas. Leo is fluent in three languages – Swahili, English, and French but mostly sings in his mother tongue, Swahili.
His songs are poignant; they portray the realities of life in Africa. One tells the story of police brutality, another of apathetic Tanzanian youth, and girls’ struggle against violence and early marriage. Another song follows a young man who stole from his family and returned later from South Africa to beg their forgiveness. His songs vary in style, some acoustic and slow, others high tempo with ngoma and calabash. All represent Tanzanian blues; a genre which Leo is adamant must be preserved.

They are Angelo Debarre, Moreno, Ninine Garcia and Tchavolo Schmitt. They are guitarists. They are gypsis. They play and perpetuate the music of Django Reinhardt. They have also a certain sense of humor, of friendship and a personal way to live their life standing. Penetrating in tiptoe in their camps, their caravans or their apartments, we discover between notes and words, a community that preserves an authentic and particular way of life, a taste for difference, where in spite of difficulties, the important thing is the pleasure of playing guitar.

Saturday 28th September 2013
A family adventure that pits plucky, wild-haired young heroine Mia against profit-hungry developers, with the future of life on Earth in the balance. One night, Mia has a premonition. So, after saying a few words of parting at her mother’s grave, she sets out on a journey across mountains and jungles in search of her father, who has been trapped in a landslide at a disaster-plagued construction site on a remote tropical lake.In the middle of the lake stands the ancient Tree of Life, watched over by innocent, bumbling forest spirits called the Migoo, who grow and change shape as they please, morphing from small childlike beings to petulant giants. It is the Migoo who have been disrupting the construction to protect this sacred site - and now, together with Mia, they join in a fight to find Mia’s father and save the Tree.

I.M - hammering onWood Collages by Jan van Esch
6.30pmENTRANCE FREE
Opening Tuesday 8th October 2013
I lay down a puzzle of pieces of collected wood, without a blue print. Larger or smaller parts, collected or bought at the market, with their own color, decay, dirt and forms, bring their own little history and are joined together to make a new story. Then they are spread out all over the floor, and shifting and fitting starts. One special piece or some pieces guide the initial thought and then the left overs of old doors, windows, tables and chairs slowly get a new form.
Nails connect the pieces and split other parts in two, making use of the total lack of carpentry skills, combining it to a new work. These are my wood collages, in memory of the(ir) past.
On the wood collages: ‘Other people offer similar constructions … yet these by van Esch strike me as unusually well considered and subtle; quite lovely in fact…. I suspect it took a long time to get them to look so spontaneous and to make their beauty so timeless’. Friday 18th October 2013
Nineteenth-century Paris comes vibrantly alive in Jean Renoir’s exhilarating tale of the opening of the world-renowned Moulin Rouge. Jean Gabin plays the wily impresario Danglard, who makes the cancan all the rage while juggling the love of two beautiful women—an Egyptian belly-dancer and a naive working girl turned cancan star. This celebration of life, art and the City of Light (with a cameo by Edith Piaf) is a Technicolor tour de force by a master of modern cinema.

Triniti Bar and Restaurant
From 9.00pm
Saturday 19th October 2013
Yoshi: In the world of hip-hop, Yoshi is utterly unique: a versatile rapper and songwriter who explores the alternative direction of healthy, conscious living. His passion to deliver uplifting, hopeful and entertaining messages for humanity is evident throughout the deep layers of his Pacific Islander and African American heritage and musical roots he embraces like no one else has (or could).
Gaiden: Coming to terms with the environment he lives in, GaiDen Gadema knows complacency all to well. People who wish to contribute to hip hop by “going with the formula” or emulating what’s “hot”, is an epidemic in Des Moines Iowa, a Dead Meat Industry. GaiDen knows and by some odd fortune, understands those boundaries, however, chooses to smash them into inexistence! Raised as an army brat, GaiDen’s travels have exposed him to a diversity of ideas, cultures and dialects which contribute to his music. A huge fanatic for hardcore street level hip hop, GaiDen spills bars into the mic with kaleidoscope-like depictions of being a “regular everyday person”- just like you, however still, misunderstood by peers and onlookers alike.

CONFINEMENTExhibition Hall
6.30pmENTRANCE FREE
Opening Tuesday 22nd October 2013
4 walls 4 artists Enclosed for 48 hoursConfinement, being locked up behind doors, between four walls is reminiscent of imprisonment or of solitude. This solitude evokes feelings of walls, borders but also of contradiction; the loneliness of wide open spaces that make us dream. This is not to mention the solitude of urban spaces caused by the rapid development of our cities. Boulevards are bustling with people, crowds swarm together, live beside each other, pass without speaking to each other, without even noticing each other.Take time to think and reflect about the freedom of creating : breaks, blockage, obsessions, unrest, set ideas, judgments of values, irrational deliusions or delirium which prevent us from really expressing ourselves, accessing and revealing ourselves.A human adventure where alliances and oppositions will be created, where artists’ egos will no doubt collide with one another under this confinement. Is creating under constraint still creating ? Or does it blur the borders between dreams and reality ?With Gadi Ramadhani, Francis patrick Imanjama, Charlotte Schattenmann & Delphine Buysse
