thank You and see You soon!

Taking part in the Alliance Française adventure means embracing an institution which goes above and beyond its simple mission of promoting the French language and culture. It means working with passionate men and women: teachers, staff, committee members, volunteers, cultural and institutional partners, students, artists…It means constantly explaining that the Alliance is first and foremost a not-for-profit organisation open to the city and at the start time forming an integral part of the French cultural network overseas.

This can sometimes be difficult for some people to understand. It means knowing that there is a beginning and an end to one’s time as director, a modest contribution to a long-term development project. The Alliance Française has been active in Melbourne since 1890. I have been part of this wonderful adventure from October 2007 to today. So yes, Melbourne truly is “funky” and “vibrant”, adjectives that made me smile when I arrived and which I saw used in all the magazines, websites and other festivals. A city that is curious, open, diverse, simple and snobbish at the same time, where life is good. My waistline attests to that! Thank you to the entire Alliance Française team for these four wonderful years spent in Melbourne and to everyone I’ve come across over the course of my time as the head of this fantastic institution.

See you soon,Patrice Pauc

A bientôt,Patrice Pauc

“the alliance Française oF melbourne? it’s Fantastic! You’re so luckY!”

This is the chorus that I hear every time I talk about my next appointment as Director of the AFM. The AFM’s reputation therefore transcends Australia’s borders and it’s with a great deal of honour and joy that I join the AFM team as of September. Performing my duties has taken me to Botswana, southern India, then to Bangladesh in the name of this marvellous and unique Institution that is

the Alliance Française.Dynamism, commitment and professionalism are some of the qualities associated with the Melbourne branch. I will therefore commit myself to continuing along the same path, following the footsteps of Patrice Pauc, and endeavouring to carry on the remarkable progress that he was able to achieve during his time as Director and in close collaboration with the Board of Directors. Looking forward to meeting you in Melbourne very soon!

Saliha Lefevre

Edito The 2008 Nobel laureate for Literature - J.M.G. Le Clézio - is a writer like no other. He will also present a free public presentation in French at the University of Melbourne as part of a symposium entitled “Social Dreaming: Intercultural Approaches to Imagining Ideal Societies” at the University of Melbourne (Carrillo Gantner Lecture Theatre, Sidney Myer Asia Centre) 7pm, Friday 21 October 2011). This event will be followed by the annual gala dinner of the French Trust Fund at University House. just been published in English, revealing the historical lessons of colonialism in the Moroccan Sahara and the ensuing waves of immigration to France.

JMG Le Clézio has also written about his father’s life and humanitarian work as a doctor in Nigeria, as well as composing a utopia set in Mexico, short stories for young adults and an anti-whaling play. Although he has travelled widely himself, this esteemed writer has never been to Australia – his closest encounter being the Pacific Island of Vanuatu – and we are very fortunate to be able to welcome him to Melbourne, the only city where he will be making public appearances during his stay.

Since winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2008, JMG Le Clézio has limited his public engagements to the humanitarian and environmental causes that have always motivated his work and life choices. His projects while in Australia relate to the promotion of intercultural communication for peace, continuing on from his recent contributions to founding a Centre for Intercultural Exchange and Peace in Mauritius.

Nobel Laureate Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio will make his first trip to Australia in October to take up a three-week stay as writer-in-residence at the University of Melbourne, thanks to the generous support of the Walter Mangold Trust Fund.

With over 40 novels, essays, short stories and plays to his name, JMG Le Clézio has been a literary icon in France since winning a major prize at the age of 23 with his first novel, The Interrogation in 1963. Now the rest of the world is waking up to the lyrical prose that has topped the French bestseller lists for almost half a century, with English versions of his books being re-released and new translations being commissioned.

Recent translations include Wandering Star, an incisive fictionalized account of the flight of the Jews from southern France and the parallel plight of displaced Palestinians in refugee camps on margins of society; The Prospector, which traces the story of his paternal grandfather’s search for pirate gold and his family’s subsequent exile from their home in Mauritius; and his epic novel, Desert, which has

Who is Emmanuel Bernardoux?

First and foremost, I’m a researcher. The medium that I use changes according to my ideas and the images that come to me. I’m 42, I’ve been creating for 23 years. What I mean by creating is exploring. The medium and the tools that I use are not actually very important. What matters to me is the research, the emotion that comes to me which I then try to re-express and therefore share with the people who are going to see my works. I’m building a huge puzzle and I don’t yet know how it will end up. By puzzle I mean the connections and the echoes between each of the visual pieces that I create.

For example, you’ll find a number or a series of letters in a painting which will be used in one of my films.

Numbers and letters have a symbolic meaning to you.

Life is an amazing playground. Signs are everywhere, they follow me and I use them as madium, openings, starting points. Some numbers certainly have strong meaning for me.For instance the number 12. In the Bible there are 12 apostles, I was born in December (the 12th month of the year). You can make a cube out of 12 matchsticks and if you flatten that cube it makes the shape of a cross. 12 is also 1 + 2, which makes 3. I’m one of three brothers, my mother had three miscarriages before giving birth to me and my father passed away in March. 3 also represents the Trinity in the Bible. 3 is a theme that I develop in my paintings and some of my experimental films: like dog/human/god, the perfect balance of human beings.

Painting or photography? Painting and photography?

Haha. Painting, photography and film. Number 3 again.

Why come (back) to Melbourne?

Ah, Melbourne. Signs again. Letters this time. I’ll explain: in 2010 I travelled to Montreal, La Rochelle, New York and Brussels. Let’s take the initials MLRNB. Putting them in order, that gives you: MLBRN, MeLBouRNe. So it makes a lot of sense that I should come back here in 2011.And I’m coming back because I’d like to pursue several opportunities that came up during my last trip here: a significant month-long exposition at the Alliance Française of paintings and films and an artist residency at the Bundanon Trust with David Chisholm, Mauricio

Eheh. Peinture, photo et vidéo. Le 3, encore lui.

Pourquoi (re)venir à Melbourne ?

Ah, Melbourne. Encore des signes. Des lettres cette fois-ci. J’explique : j’ai séjourné en 2010 a Montréal, La Rochelle, New York, Bruxelles.

Carrasco and Patricia Allessandrini on a collaborative audiovisual project, “the experiment”. We’re going to adapt author Mark Ravenhill’s text which should be “screened” in Melbourne in Autumn 2012. So I should be coming back to Australia for a third time next year. And anyway I really like surprises, so who knows, with a bit of luck, I might find an art gallery for my paintings and a production house for my films, meet a band there who might like my clips, and then, if the inspiration is there, I’d like to make a new short film. I’d also like to enjoy this attractive, lively city. I like meeting people, having coffee on a terrace and observing people in the street, life marching on.As the reporter Dan Eldon said, “The journey is the destination”.

Is France a sleeping beauty?

Ha! Who knows!

Comme disait le reporter Dan Eldon : “the journey is the destination”.

La France est-elle une belle endormie ?

My art practice reflects sentiment of nostalgia through translation of disappearance into remembrance and fantasy. It reflects my examination of the paradox of reconstructing ephemeral mental images and sensations in permanent materials. Disappearance is a notion that an absence can be a unique and expanded form of presence. Disappearance thus retains an excess meaning and experience.

Through out my practice, I have employed a range of variously permanent and ephemeral materials including clay, water, ash, steam, snow, human’s heartbeat, animal bones, and human hair in order to produce a visual representation suggestive of the contrast and contradiction between appearance and disappearance, and between ephemerality and permanence.

The cultivation of the art of gas-tronomy at the Court of Versailles was mediated by the intimate con-nection between philosophical and political discourse, absolutism and the “feminising” of the aristocracy. The great public repast, known as Le Grand Couvert, was the symbol of power on a daily basis.

At the Alliance Francaise de Mel-bourne, I set out Le Grand Couvert

in a Rococo manner. Colonies of snails, fed by revolutionary ideas of equality and natural goodness show little regard for the powers of the State and the pressures of Civi-lisation as they consume a range of delicious cakes and philosophical texts. The digestion of this Grand Service leaves a fertile ground for new forms of thinking and life.

The French writer Georges Perec (1936-1982) is perhaps best de-scribed as a literary experimen-talist, one who was intrigued by the question of form. Almost three decades after his death in 1982, he is recognised as one of the most influential and inventive writ-ers of his generation.

Did you know that Perec had an “Australian connection” and actu-ally came to the Alliance Fran-çaise de Melbourne in 1981 to give a lecture? Thirty years after Perec’s lec-ture at the Alliance Française de Melbourne on October 8, 1981, join us for a lively discussion with writers, researchers and readers of Perec at this Melbourne Salon

from 7-9 pm. Together we will explore Perec’s legacy and rel-evance to today’s audiences.

RMIT BrandmarkClear space & Minimum size

RMIT Brandmark The RMIT Brandmark is the key identifier of the university. The RMIT Brandmark is formed by two key elements:

- the RMIT Wordmark - the RMIT Symbol

The relationship between these two elements is fixed and should never be separated or used as individual elements. It is essential that the brandmark is always reproduced from the digital art files supplied.

Clear space The RMIT brandmark needs to be surrounded by an area of uninterrupted clear space to allow it to remain prominent on all communications.

Clear space is the non-print area surrounding the brandmark. A basic formula had been used to calculate the minimum ‘clear space’– this can be used to determine clear space for the brandmark at any size.

No other graphic elements (such as photography or typography) should appear within this zone. Wherever possible, apply more clear space than the minimum specified in this guide.

Minimum size To avoid any possible reproduction problems, the brandmark must never be produced at a size less than that shown opposite. Wherever possible, reproduce the brandmark at a size larger than the minimum, especially where there may be a question around the quality of the reproduction, for example silk screening or embroidery.
