• Allie Brophy I have always loved animals since a very early age. I remember my first dog when I was 3 years old and going to meet him. He was playing with a few other puppies at a breeders house. I saw him sitting by himself in the corner and knew that I was going to take him home 1 hr · Unlike · 4

• Jason Currie I remember you saying you volunteered looking after animals at a young age it was a great passion of yours ! Even if you were not supposed to lol. Tell us about the great escape the gerbil made ! 1 hr · Like

• Allie Brophy Yes, when I was a child I volunteered at primary school to take the class gerbil home for half term and look after him during the holidays. Unfortunately I hadn't asked my parents who were running their boarding house and the gerbil (Monty) escaped. He was mistaken to be a mouse and my mother screamed as they tried to catch him. Thankfully he was found safe and well under my brother's bed. My parents were not too happy and the school then introduced a 'parental permission' form for children taking home pets in the holidays.

• Amy Lewis Great story! So, your current project is set up to help children build positive relationships with animals and give advice can you tell us about why you set it up. 1 hr · Edited · Like

• Allie Brophy Yes I wanted to do something to help children to understand that animals have feelings too and to get an understanding of their awareness on this topic. Along with a couple of other people, Anna Maria and Joan I decided to start the project and put the booklet together to see if we could try this as a pilot if it could possibly be of benefit to even just one dog, child or other animal. Anna worked as a teacher and had experience relating to children and Joan was a police officer already visiting schools about road safety. The project is designed to help children to think about what they would do in certain scenarios and to put themselves in the place of an animal and imagine how they would feel too. We present to the children different scenarios and ask what they would do in that situation and what they think the best course of action would be and this usually gets them thinking and engaging with us 1 hr · Unlike · 4

• Amy Lewis What was your inspiration for setting up the project? 1 hr · Like · 1

• Allie Brophy My inspiration came from hearing about a dog called Peppi who had been attacked by some children and who had very sadly had a brick thrown at his head causing him to have a severe hemmorage and the dog was very lucky he survived. 1 hr · Like · 2

• Allie Brophy Yes but unfortunately were unable to do anything due to the circumstances and with them being children. Peppi's owner Claire campaigned for help when this happened and the community all rallied round to help and assist with vet bills 58 mins · Like · 1

• John Hodkinson Your lovely, easy to read booklet is a useful tool to help get the message across. Can members access it? Can we do anything to help you provide it to more children? 57 mins · Like

• Amy Lewis Why Do you think the kids attacked the dog ? Did they think it was a game ? Were they being nasty ? Or was it simply a lack of awareness and education ? 56 mins · Like · 1

Page 7: Allie Brophy Interview

• Allie Brophy I didn't know Claire at the time who is Peppi's owner or if she had insurance. Some insurances only cover so much depending on the nature of treatment but Peppi needed specialist treatment. Claire will do her best to answer any questions relating to the attack on the event wall tonight if anyone would like to talk with her 55 mins · Like · 3

• Allie Brophy It was very sad what happened to Peppi and whether the children intended to hurt him deliberately by picking up that brick and taunting him, it was complete lack of awareness and possibly learned behaviour if the children had not been taught how to relate positively to animals or understand that they have feelings too just like we do 53 mins · Edited · Like · 3
