Welcome! This step-by-step guide introduces you to the wide range of options provided by the new Timber construction family.

Five steps show you all you need to know - from creating a simple floor plan in Allplan to transferring the walls to the timber construction module to displaying timber frame walls.

Each step is described in detail so that you can follow quickly and easily.

2 General notes Allplan 2009

Basics Timber as a construction material is on the rise. It is used increasingly in the construction of apartments and houses.

In particular, new energetic requirements make this construction material so attractive to architects. Advantages of wood frame construction: short construction period, energy-saving design and low-cost construction thanks to prefab house design. The prefabricated units can be shipped to the building site easily and assembled quickly regardless of the weather.

In collaboration with Weto AG, Nemetschek Allplan has developed a solution that combines solid construction and timber construction. The timber construction module, which can be integrated in Allplan 2009, helps you design your projects with ecological considerations in mind. In addition, you can achieve maximum quality with the minimum of costs thanks to a consistent data flow - from design to production. The option to combine solid construction and timber construction in one application as well as numerous specific functions such as special solutions for corners, abutments, roofs and dormers considerably facilitate design of timber and wooden buildings of any kind.

General notes The new Wall Production module (Timber construction family) enables architects and designers to reap the benefits of solid construction and timber construction combined in a single program. In addition to harnessing the advantages provided by this combined approach, you can immediately calculate costs and transfer data to machines - this saves you time and money.

• The most important features:

• Walls consisting of 3 layers (2 plates, 1 post)

- Functions for creating timber frame constructions (e.g. prefab houses)

- Posts: any setup, any material, any dimensions

- Freely definable plates (material, dimensions etc.)

- Any number of definitions for interior or exterior walls (up to 3 layers per wall)

• Predefined connection systems (can also be user-defined)

- Based on the wall setup defined, you can specify how the individual components intersect and interact (T-connections, corners etc.).

• Connection system

- Connections are created automatically after you have assigned definitions

• Modifying layer definitions of walls

- You can change the wall definition later and replace it with other types

• Headers or recesses for windows and doors are created automatically in the relevant wall layers

- You can define webs and headers for windows and doors in a dialog box

- After you have made all necessary definitions, the windows and doors are integrated automatically

- Window and door elements can be edited manually

• Walls can be divided individually

- You need to select each wall separately in order to create posts and plates.

- You can delete the division of a wall by clicking a button. You can specify whether you want to delete individual layers of the wall or the entire wall.

• Edit tools (cutting; separating)

- You can use these tools to cut and intersect timber elements and to adjust them to auxiliary lines. Elements can be shortened and lengthened as you require.

- When separating components, you can cut out parts in their entirety: specify where you want to separate the component and the program will automatically delete the part in-between.

• You can make any entries in 2D and 3D (isometric view) as well as change materials and modify cross-sections

- You can change the materials and dimensions of all timber components later (you can even select multiple entries using the Shift key).

• You can copy, move and rotate objects using the familiar Allplan tools (e.g. timber schedule and quantities schedule)

- You can use Allplan schedules to analyze and evaluate timber elements

• You can use Allplan's layer structure to show and hide components and wall layers. Allplan provides a separate layer structure for timber construction.

• All walls adjust automatically to Allplan's roof planes. Flank walls are created automatically

- You can adjust individual walls manually to the roof frame

- You can edit window and door elements manually

Start by creating a training project in Allplan 2009 so that you can follow the steps described in this guide.

To create a training project in Allplan 2009

1 Start Allplan 2009.

2 On the File menu, click Open Project....

3 In the Open Project dialog box, click New Project.

4 Enter a name for the new project, Step by Step - Timber Construction, for example.

5 Select the Same folder name as project name option and click Next>.

Step 1: creating floor plan The first step is to create an L-shaped floor plan. Based on this floor plan you will learn about the basic tools in the Wall Production module (Timber construction family). You will use the tools in the Basic: Walls, Openings, Components module to create this floor plan.

To draw the walls

1 In the Tools palette, open the Basic: Walls, Openings, Components module (Architecture family).

2 Select the Wall tool.

3 Click Properties in the Wall Context toolbar and make the following settings:

4 To select a different layer, click the layer currently set in the Wall dialog box.

5 Select the AR_WALL layer by opening the shortcut menu of this layer and clicking Current.

Inserting windows and doors Now you will insert a double-leaf door and five windows in the walls.

To insert the door and the windows

1 Select the Door tool.

2 Click Properties in the Door Context toolbar and make the following settings:

3 Close the Door dialog box and place the door 1.00 m from the top right corner.

4 Select the Window tool.

5 Click Properties in the Window Context toolbar and make the following settings:

6 Close the Window dialog box and place the window 1.00 m from the bottom right corner.

7 Place the second window 0.80 m from the first window.

8 Now insert another window in the horizontal wall at the bottom. Here, too, enter 0.80 m for the offset.

9 Finally, two windows are required in the vertical wall on the left. The first window is 1.20 m from the bottom left wall corner. The distance between the two windows is 1.08 m. Place the two windows and press ESC to quit the tool.

The result is displayed at the beginning of step 1.

Now you will switch to the Wall Production module (Timber construction family) and use the Transfer Walls tool to transfer all the walls in the current drawing file to the timber construction module.

Transferring walls

To transfer the walls to the timber construction module

1 In the Tools palette, open the Wall Production module (Timber construction family).

2 Select the Transfer Walls tool.

Allplan transfers all the walls in the current drawing file to the Wall Production module. The walls are displayed in a separate dialog box. Now you can assign definitions and corner systems to the walls. In addition, you can make settings for door and window openings. As an additional option, you can cut the individual wall layers at the roof.

After you have transferred the walls to the timber construction module, you will assign wall types to the walls.

Identifying the walls' outer edges Note: The manner in which the transferred walls are displayed in the timber construction module can vary considerably. This depends on how you create the walls. The illustration on the left shows the result when you enter the walls

in a clockwise direction and the walls' offset direction is toward the inside (i.e. the arrow points inward). The walls are also entered in a clockwise direction in the example on the right; however, the arrow points outward.

You may get a completely different result when you transfer as-built data to the timber construction module. We assume that this is the situation in our example.

Before you can assign wall types to the walls, you need to check whether all arrows are aligned to the walls' outer edges.

To align the arrows to the walls' outer edges

1 Four walls are not oriented correctly in the example below.

Click these walls. They are displayed in red.

2 Click Turn.

The Turn function turns the selected walls around the center axis.

Now the arrows are aligned to the outer edges of the walls.

Assigning wall types Next, you need to assign the corresponding wall type (exterior wall or interior wall) to each wall.

To assign wall types

1 In this example, you need to assign the following wall types:

To assign wall types, click the walls separately or select the relevant walls by enclosing them in a selection rectangle.

Start by selecting the three interior walls. They are displayed in red.

2 Click Set wall layer.

Note: Always select walls first and then assign a wall type and not the other way round!

3 A dialog box opens. Select the Inner wall standard in the Available wall types area.

4 Click OK to confirm.

Allplan displays the selected walls in accordance with the color defined for interior walls, i.e. light green.

5 Assign the External wall standard type to the other three walls.

Defining corners You can design wall corners by assigning predefined "connection systems" to the wall ends. This operation is semi-automatic.

The section that follows describes the general procedure for defining corners. There are several other ways of defining corners (look in Allplan's online Help for more information).

Intersecting corners and selecting the "ridge" corner system

To intersect corners and select the "ridge" corner system

1 Open the Corner definition tab.

2 The Select connection dialog box opens. Click Cancel as you do not need it right now.

3 Click the Blend corner button.

4 The Select connection dialog box is displayed again. Select the Ridge corner (Standard-external-ridge) and click OK to confirm.

5 Click a convex corner.

6 Now the dialog box prompts you to identify a second wall. Click the vertical wall at the top.

Wall 1 is the first wall you select and wall 2 is the second wall, which is to join the first wall.

7 To confirm, click in an empty area of the workspace with the left mouse button.

8 Join the walls at all convex corners.

The result should look like this:

Tip: The Delete definition function removes the corner system you assigned to the walls selected previously.

To intersect corners and select the "valley" corner system

1 Click the Blend corner function again.

2 In the Select connection dialog box, choose the Valley corner (Standard-external-valley) and click OK to confirm.

3 Click the concave corner.

4 First click the vertical wall.

5 Then click the horizontal wall.

6 Click in the workspace to confirm.

7 Click OK to close the dialog box.

The floor plan you transferred to the timber construction module at the beginning of this guide now looks like this:

Tip: The Corner reset function removes the corner systems from all the walls.

Creating timber elements

To create timber elements for the individual walls

In the Tools palette, the Wall Production module (Timber construction family) is open.

1 Select the Create Single tool.

2 Click the first wall.

3 You can make the following settings in the Create partition dialog box:

Type of partition: you can select a fixed or variable value for the division.

Reference point: specify the point where division is to start.

All layers: specify whether you want to divide the layer selected or all layers.

Partition layer: select the layer you want to divide.

Reference layer: specify the layer you want to use as the reference for division.

Distance: enter the distance.

Supporting member at start and end point: specify whether you want to place a supporting member at the start and end.

4 Click OK to confirm the Create partition dialog box.

5 Repeat steps 2 to 4 with the other walls.

6 Press ESC to quit the Create Single tool.

The result is displayed at the beginning of step 4.

1 Activate the Select, Set Layers tool (Format menu).

2 Set the AR_WALL Wall and WC_PLATE Plate layers to Hidden, frozen.

3 Click OK to close the Layer dialog box.

4 On the Window menu, click 2+1 Animation Window.

The result is displayed at the beginning of step 5.
