NEWSLETTER.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE from my local Church Magazine

How not to do it?

A man was trying to pull out of a parking place, but bashed the bumper of the parked car in front of him. Witnessed by a handful of pedestrians waiting for a bus, the driver got out, inspected the dam-age, and proceeded to write a note to leave on the windshield of the car he had hit. The note read: “Hello, I have just hit your car, and as there are some people watching me who think that I am writ-ing this note to leave you my name, phone number and driver’s licence number, but I am not”

I am not sure the vicar is not encouraging such behaviour by allowing such thoughts to be in the Parish Magazine but it nicely leads me onto the next bit.

WHAT DOES ONE DO

You have just arrived in Tesco’s car park in Winnall, parked neatly (luckily I have a Blue Badge which enables me to get in and out of the car more easily when thump an out of control full trolley hits the side of the car. Out one leaps (a comparative term I believe) to find a lady in her 40s (I guess) struggling to remove offending trolley from sight behind the Land Rover. “Excuse me” says I in a pleasant enough manner “your trolley has just thumped my car!” Her response was immediate“It hasn’t done any damage” as she was swiftly walking away. It does take me a bit of time to get the limbs straight etc to be able to walk to the back of the car where of course I find that it has dam-aged my car.

Does one go in hot pursuit of the offender or just let it go, I chose the latter as I reckoned she was tougher than me and would you believe drove a BMW in black!!!!

Barons Classic Car Auction by Neil Simpson

Nita and I are reasonably incompatible on most subjects except for auctions and cars. So Classic Car Auctions offer unique opportunities of marital unity – even if it is only for the day! We decided along with Neil & Ros Partridge (co AA members) and my friend and chief mechanic Graham to attend the Winter event on 28th February at Sandown Race Course.

I had looked at the running order and was interested in a couple of late reg MG’s and an Alfa Romeo Spyder. So I registered to bid and the other men in the party decided not to after discussions or do I mean monologue with their wives.

The cars I was interested in were well over described by the vendors. The MG’s that were supposedly in good condition both had wrecked upholstery and in one case was rusty. The Alfa

that was described as pristine internally and externally had clearly had a back end shunt that had been badly repaired and resprayed. My bidding hand never saw any action. However, the cars and entertainment gave all of us a great day out. Highligh ts included a beautifully restored 1936 MG TA that my wife told me I could neither afford or fit behind the steering wheel. It went for £27K. A 1967 Fiat Dino Spyder that went for £84K

The real White Elephant of the auction was a Jensen Interceptor. Advertised as having been completely rebuilt by the vendorwith only the engine block and fuel tank as original! Everything

but everything includingthe bodywork had beenuprated and was notoriginal. It came with anA4 set of instructions onhow to start it whichincluded leaving thecockpit on twooccasions!

Six figures had been spent on it but the estimated value

started at £50K. It attracted zero bids.

Other interesting lots included a 1956 Merc 190SL wreck that looked if it had been on fire but was totally soli d and complete that went for £47K. This will reappear in the future for mega bucks. Many at the auction did not appreciate this.

Having dealt with the sublime, the ridiculous included the left hand drive Austin Healey from Florida. The body was original and pretty well solid but looking closely it was twisted. It came with boxes of bits but was obviously incomplete. The photo shows its best side. Reserve was £17K and unsurprisingly it did not sell.

Th e buyer I was most sorry for was that of the Rover 3.5 that went for top dollar. A telephone bidder bought it and I hope they did that on physical inspection ratherthan brochure description. The paint job was OK from a distance butdire near too under inside lights. Looked like they had sprayed it withdust on it

The carthat I gotmostangryabout –as anMGR V8owner –was thelate entryMGRV8.It was advertised “as new” w ith a unique 6K plus

low mileage as per vendor description. It was advertised dry stored and “as new”. A third party at the auction looked at it and said it must have been stored in a barn without a roof. Another took the dip stick out and there was a blob of thick black oil that barely made the dip stick. . The steering wheel and pedals looked more than 6K miles . The hood was original but not good and the wood trim was mostly cracked and peeling. It was a Japanese re import circa 1998. On re importation the speedometer had been replaced from the original KM version to an MPH version. So goodness knows how many miles it had done in Japan. The good news is that it did not meet reserve as it had no business so to do if the truth had been published but bids were buoyant enough to give me a good feeling about our genuine RV8.Very rarely do Nita and I leave an auction without purchasing. We were looking for a day to day carthat we did not need to get precious about. This is to take the place ofour modern day MGTF that recently got rear end shunted and has takenalmost 6 months to sort as it has a unique works Rover paint job thatshould be worth preserving as an investment.Nita wants to go back to an automatic as she enjoyed many yearsdriving such in a Merc.. This Mini was a 1.3i automatic with UnionJack leather seats, tartan door cards and air con. Those who know mywife would recognize this was just the car for her.. The only reason wedid not buy this was it would be too difficult to put our grandson in theback seat and as a vehicle had no air bags or crash test testimonialssuitable for transporting our precious grandson.

Our conclusions of the day at Barons Auction s are as follows:-

1. Some lots are well over described by ven-dors and Barons take zero responsibility

2. Never buy to Barons estimates as most cars are negotiated post auction for under this.

3. It is Classic Cars but has the same ethic as Modern Car auctions at Blackebushe – buyer beware

HOWEVER, buying or watching it is a great day out for £15 for two pensioners and much more stimulating than the Day Centre

TIME FLIES.

On Sunday 5th March I was talking on the phone to my old friend Nella Pryce who is the widow of Tom Pryce the Grand Prix driver of the 70’s that was killed on 5th March 1977 at Kylami during TheSouth African Grand Prix.

To cut a very long story very short I was working as a Management Trainee in Caffyn’s Rolls Royce Division in Ton bridge in Kent and my houseshare friend who was into sailing etc asked if I would like to go to a Dinner Dance on the training ship The Arrathusa docked in the Medway River, I had no significant (or in fact any) other at the time and Robin suggested that I took his girlfriend Penny’s younger sister to the do. Thiswas 1971 and I was very amenable for someone sourcing tottie for me (Robin did have a “little” black book).

Robin and I had just completed building a Lotus 7 which had a Formula 2 Cosworth engine in it (it’s not what you know it is who you know – I went to school with Mike Costin’s son who got us a 2 race engine for £1000). I thought this would impress rather than my every day car of a MG Midget or Robin’s Triumph Herald Convertible. Not good if one is wearing a long dress or come to that even a short dress (becomes a bit immodest!!!). Anyway the evening obviously went reasonably well as Nella agreed to further evenings out with me. She then met Thomas Maldwyn Pryce and to be honest she flipped like I have never seen anyone do before or since (I am assured nothing to do with salaries – I was on £600 per annum whereas Tom was on £250,000).

Tom and I got on like a house on fire to the degree that when he went racing and Nella stayed at home I would take her out and quite often he would ring and invite me on one of their dates, strangereally but we all got on. Nella’s parents lived in a rambling farm on the Otford Hills near Sevenoaks

Page 5: ALLSORTS MOTOR CLUB -April 2017.pdf · started at £50K. It attracted zero bids. Other interesting lots included a 1956 Merc 190SL wreck that looked if it had been on fire but was

and it was a bit like permanent open house with strangers wandering in and out at all times of day and night.

I met through Tom people such as Sterling Moss, Graham and Bette Hill (great man, very funny), Tony and Janet Brice, James and Suzi Hunt, Derek Bell (Nella’s cousin) and lots of others some of whom are still with us, many are not unfortunately.

I took Nella and her father Michael to her wedding to Tom in 1975 in an Austin 7 Chummy and will always remember the vicar announcing at the end of the service that all these Grand Prix drivers were no to overtake the wedding car. Tom had given Nella a Triumph TR6 as a wedding present as she liked mine so much (as a matter of interest I sold mine to Paul Ramsden in I think 1976 or 77). These cars got Tom and I into some hot water at times. On one occasion Nella and sister Penny had flown off somewhere for a girlie trip and Tom and I were told to collect them from Heathrow at 4am or some such

stupid time. Coming off the roundabout under the M4 Tom did a 360 turn, well if he can do it so canI and did which caused the car behind to put on it’s blues and twos – oh sh..!!

Nella, Mother Diana, Father Michael and brother

Robert in my Austin 7 Chummy

These two policeman pulled both of us over and went to Tom’s car first and were there a comparatively short time before walking back to me. There comment to me was something like “I suppose you are going to tell us you’re a Grand Prix Racing Driver as well are you?” My reply was “No I’m not but he taught me everything I know!!!!” and we got away with it.

Due to it being the 40th Anniversary of Tom’s death it seems that the world has gone mad and a variety of his “so-called friends” are targeting both Nella and I with film of his fatal crash in Kyalami and I expect the young man Jansen van Vuuren, the 19 year old Marshall who ran across the track went Tom was coming at him at 170mph, family might well be getting the same Youtube and other films directed in their way, it is a sick or certainly very strange world we live in.

Great times, sad reminiscences’

CAPE TO CAPE 2017.

The final 40 cars and crews have been chosen (considering we all paid in April 2016 for an entry some will be disappointed but will get their entry fee of £2500 back). I am told that there are at least 10 crews awaiting in the wings for any terminal breakdowns of either car or crews. Like all, or so it seems, international events are always oversubscribed with waiting lists. The same applies for The Circuit des Ardennes in July and even Teuf-Teuf in October (let alone finding a hotel with at

Page 6: ALLSORTS MOTOR CLUB -April 2017.pdf · started at £50K. It attracted zero bids. Other interesting lots included a 1956 Merc 190SL wreck that looked if it had been on fire but was

least 1 available room in Compiegne!)

The route is plotted but we have been given the names of thehotels in which we are staying just in case someone athome needs us urgently. I thought it would be good tolet my co-driver have a look at the hotels and wherethey are in Spain, he, poor lad thought that I had plottedthe route and we had several hundred miles ofmotorway to traverse which even in a 66 year oldJaguar can’t be difficult!! I disabused him of thatthought instantly by showing him photos of previousroutes that we had taken and the width etc there isusually not enough room for 2 even if the goats get outof the road!!

And

sometimes they even forget the tarmac surface at all!

But, then, eventually you end up on my kind of road somewhere in some mountains (no idea) where the hairpins are sharp and the drops deep and a co-driver telling you you still have to keep up to the 30mph average and we are running x minutes late but don’t drop us over the edge –

WHAT!!! I obviously took the photo so it must have been on a straight bit otherwise you would have seen Jane’s arm trying to wrench the camera out of my hands or us plunging over the edge. Good road surface though, the skelpings look uniform.

I have again attached a Sponsorship Form for those of you who would like to donate to MacMillan Cancer Support for whom the 40 cars are doing this trip, all the money goes to them as we the participants pay all our own expenses. Your cheques should be made out to MacMilllan Cancer Support and if you allow Gift Aid your donation is increased by 25%.

We can then arrange a group evening meal and perhaps a Sunday lunch on the way back home We currently have 12 people and need 4 more to get group rates Contact MOG on [email protected] or 07771 523694"

MORE WINTER WORK

If you read the last Newsletter you would have seen that I have embarked on a variety of work on my various cars. Having got the Jaguar back from Graham the trimmer who did a superb job on the new tonneau cover (I have promised him a tonneau cover and new hood on my big Adler in the autumn I was so impressed with his work. So the Jaguar was finished except on Wednesday last I opened the driver’s door to start the car up and the door fell off in my hands, luckily itis aluminum and therefore light so it didn’t drop to the ground and damage – the hinges obviously sometime in the past had been braised up and the joint had eventually failed (why braise it god only knows) two new hinges

once ordered have now arrived and are fitted so hopefully nothing else will go wrong with this car before I go off to Spain in a month’s time. Just to sort out the Headlight alignment and the “Flame Thrower” Spot Lamps which seem to have retired from working.

Page 10: ALLSORTS MOTOR CLUB -April 2017.pdf · started at £50K. It attracted zero bids. Other interesting lots included a 1956 Merc 190SL wreck that looked if it had been on fire but was

The “big” Adler has gone to Jim Stokes Workshop in Waterlooville for an engine overhaul (last done in 1965) and whilst there I asked that they looked at the clutch as last summer the “boys” using it on The Somme trip thought it was slipping a bit, so naturally I thought the leather cone was worn. To my amazement no leather - it is a metal to metal cone clutch and the slipping is probably caused by too much grease or oil being on the surfaces so once cleaned it should be OK for the next50 years or so.

The engine I suspect will be a different story and I am prewarning my Bank Manager that I might need a financial prop for many years to come or should I go the crowd funding route which I understand can be very easy and lucrative. On the “little” Adler front Nick Canfor reminds me that the carburetor bowl is held together with Araldite which he put on as the solder had started leaking, the waterpump needs tightening, the radiator needs refixing, and I would like to have made a spare set of points as I am depending upon 1 set at the moment and one never knows how long it might last.

GREAT NEWS

The DVLA has given the thumbs up to reproduction bodies. The FBHVC and the DVLA has reached an understanding over age related registration numbers for re-bodied classics. The DVLA accepts that original bodies may properly replaced on an existing chassis aw they deteriorate over time. It has said “The registration application should demonstrate that the replacement body is one that could have been placed on it from the outset or is of a style that is associated with its marque”. I.E you can only replace the rotten body with something that may have been about in the original era of the car, so no GT40 bodies on Bentley chassis!

WINCHESTER MG OWNERS CLUB 25 TH ANNIVERSARY ANNUAL ‘COBWEB’ RUN 19 TH MARCH by Robert Sloane

Winchester MG Owners Club staged a peaceful invasion of the ancient city of Winchester on Sunday 19th March 2017 to celebrate its 25th Anniversary.

Page 11: ALLSORTS MOTOR CLUB -April 2017.pdf · started at £50K. It attracted zero bids. Other interesting lots included a 1956 Merc 190SL wreck that looked if it had been on fire but was

The club’s annual ‘Cobweb Run’ which is always well supported had previously been held at IBM’scampus in Hursley and more recently at the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Romsey.

The decision to hold this year’s event in Winchester itself proved to be a winner.

Under a steely grey sky, 138 classic cars of all makes and marques purred and growled into the city along highways and byways once trodden by Ancient Britons, Saxons, Romans and Normans.

They were directed with great efficiency into four parking areas grouped at the western end of the city; The Great Hall, Law Courts, Peninsula Barracks and Hampshire County Council Offices.

Each of the four parking areas was easily reached on foot and close enough to the city centre for those seeking refreshments and/or retail therapy.

Event organiser, Steve Favell was quick to acknowledge the help and support given to the club by; Hampshire County Council, Commander of the Peninsula Barracks, Winchester City Council Mayor, Jane Rutter, Hampshire Police and The Little Kitchen Café (situated in the former Guard Room of PeninsulaBarracks).

Page 12: ALLSORTS MOTOR CLUB -April 2017.pdf · started at £50K. It attracted zero bids. Other interesting lots included a 1956 Merc 190SL wreck that looked if it had been on fire but was

The club had been generous in inviting local Classic Car clubs from Hampshire to take part and there was a wide diversity of vehicles in addition to a core offering of MG’s.

Allsorts members: Gordon Cooper - Bullnose Morris; GeoffKemp – Panhard; John Parrington – Bristol 411; RobertSloane - MGB were lucky to have been allocated primeparking spots in the shadow of the Great Hall. An unkindobserver suggested the owners looked more suited to theLaw Courts but such a disparaging remark was passed off ina day of otherwise good cheer.

Page 13: ALLSORTS MOTOR CLUB -April 2017.pdf · started at £50K. It attracted zero bids. Other interesting lots included a 1956 Merc 190SL wreck that looked if it had been on fire but was

Tony Hudson – Austin 7 and Neil Simpson (MG ?) were also present but Neil was ‘on duty’ with Nita marshalling in the Peninsula Barracks Car Park. As always, the smooth running of the day was dependent on the hardy band of volunteers.

Parrticular mention must also be made of Basingstoke MGOC members Mark and Marina Woolridge who have recently joined the Allsorts. For it was their car – a very original 1963 MGB named ‘Iris’ that Mayoress Jane Rutter chose as the car she would like to take home. Without declaring her age she referred to a poster that she had on her bedroom wall as a 14 year old which happened to bear a very strong resemblance to ‘Iris’.

A collection was running throughout the day for the clubs chosen charity, Combat Stress.

The day was brisk with occasional glimpses of watery sunshine but most importantly it didn’t rain. When it was time to go home all those present felt that they had taken part in a wonderful day out and the Winchester MGOC were to be congratulated on the imagination and hard work that had made the event such a success.
