...Although from an early age, she knew she was cut out to sing, her parents’ desire was for her to have a “proper profession”. So, she concentrated on arming herself with two degrees; a Bachelor and Master’s degrees both in Architecture from the University of Lagos. But the pull to do music was too strong. She launched into limelight as a member of the musical group, KUSH. But that was short lived as the group separated in 2004 after their only album that had he hit song, ‘Let’s live together’.

We now have our own oscars: The African Music Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA); a mouthful but nonetheless, a wonderful opportunity for our stars to shine. For us in the mass media, it brings plenty of content. To analyse, give knocks or kudos to those who rocked or unrocked the red carpet.

That Genevieve’s plunging neck ensemble that set the social media ablaze or Jim Iyke wanting to be on trend with the knicker-suit that got him flacks from many ho didnt follow the New York and Paris runways.

We’ve got plenty of gist, including an interview with Biola Abola, the lady boss at MNET, under whose watch the AMVCA was launched. Just turn the pages.

On our cover, former KUSH member and gospel artiste, Lara George, talks to Jemi Ekunkunbor on career, marriage and motherhood.

This is an edition to savour!

nice. And the choir we were in, at that time, had just recorded an album on campus and it was a hit. We used to have shows and the main auditorium would be sold out. It was wonderful.

So, Gbenga said he would take one of our songs back to the USA and take it around to see if we can have a record deal. And sure enough, a couple of months later, he started calling. But there were some record labels who wanted to sign us on for 20 years. Finally, this deal came along from a record label called DKG Music. They wanted to sign us on for five albums and they were offering us what was a lot of money at that time for students. We got signed on but everything was very short lived. We had four active years but we did just one album within that time because it was a developmental stage.

We spent about two years preparing for that album, we spent another eight months recording the album before it was finally released and one year after, we were on our way to splitting, unfortunately.

What really happened? It was many things. At the time KUSH came on the

scene, the Nigerian music industry was not where it is today. We were not earning a $100,000 in endorsement deals. A couple of people who were coming up behind us then earn more now. It was very tough for three young professionals (because at that time Dapo was already based in the USA) not to have a regular income. After a while, everybody started to look for what to do and that started to cause a bit of pressure on the group. So, we grew apart because when we were all not trying to do music; there was no way the centre could hold. So, we had to go our separate ways. I must say it wasn’t easy seeing what you have built come crashing down.

At this point, what did your mother think?By that time, she wasn’t quite so quick to say, I told

you. Because by that time, people had started stopping her on the road to say, “Are you not the mother of Lara?” She was enjoying all the attention and I actually caught her a few times showing off with the KUSH album. But she never told me once that she loved the album. She never did. She always had caution in her voice. By the time the group broke up, she didn’t have much to say. But I’m not sure that she was happy that we broke up. She would have loved the euphoria to go on.

So how did you go about having to start off on your own?

It was tough. I was very unsure of myself.

Was that why you auditioned for the West African Idol competition?

Yes, it was why. But I didn’t think being a part of West African Idol was a big deal until I got into the show and I saw newspapers articles about me being in the show. I thought that Nigerians would be able to see the difference between KUSH as a brand and Lara George as a brand. Apparently, we were one and the same. I have no regrets though. I’m glad that I did because one only gets one chance to do something.

What lesson did you learn from that?I have learnt so much in life. I have learnt to be content

with what I have. People go through challenges. That was my own, my wilderness experience.

If you ask somebody else, you find your own is even better. It’s just like dry cleaning and spreading your clothes on the line, when you see somebody else’s, you say ‘no I prefer my own’.

Why did you sell the business? That was not an option because, nothing was moving

in Nigeria. The Chinese had come. Electricity was a problem. If you wanted ten employees, you had to interview at least one hundred. What Nigerians want is to come in, take what you have and go to establish theirs. They don’t want to learn. So, before you get the number of employees you want, it takes a long time. Nigeria is not what it used to be.

Most gospel artistes are not listed among A-list musicians in this country and when you are female, you are further in a minority group. How would you say you have fared?

It’s like double jeopardy. It’s extremely tough being a

REPORTAGE

female gospel artiste. It is the reason why, sometimes, I ask myself: should I be doing this? It is very tough.

As a gospel artiste, I know churches can’t pay as much as secular sponsors of shows and such sponsors would not list you as one of their artistes. How do you cope?

This is something that I deal with everyday. I have no idea. I can relate this to Africa Cup of Nations and how we used home based players and we got the cup. Sometimes, we need to value our own people. We don’t place as much value as we should on our people. If we say that we believe in this country and the future of our people then, we need to begin to put our money where our mouth is and start supporting home grown artistes. I believe the churches can pay our fees because they buy private jets. If a church can maintain private jets then, they can pay Nigerian gospel artistes well. That is my submission.

We celebrated International Women’s Day recently. How would you assess women in Nigeria?

I think women have fared absolutely wonderfully in this country in spite of all the odds. I think women are breaking the glass ceiling; doing well across spheres – in politics, journalism, entertainment, business and management. Women are excelling and we do the job well.

Would the challenge you are facing make you wish you were a man at this time?

I’ve never for one minute thought I prefer to be a man. Women, in spite of the challenges, are people who can eat their cake and have it, if you play your game right.

In what ways has motherhood affected you? It’s given me a much broader view on life; better perspective

on things. It’s made me appreciate the finer things in life.

What would you or won’t you do for music?I would use the best resources at my disposal to give the very

best music to people but I won’t go naked for music.

What is life like as a musician?Awesome! You get to do what you want to do, how you want

to do it. We have poetic license. It’s one of the best jobs in the whole world.

How challenging is it living the part of a celebrity? As far as I am concerned, you are not a celebrity until you

have like seven figures regularly in your bank account. I don’t see myself as a celebrity. When I get to that point where I have that kind of figure, then I may be able to answer this question well.

I don’t have the challenges that some of my colleagues have. I can go to the market, walk around with my hair tussled. I can get away with a lot of things. Every time I do a new hairdo, people don’t recognize me. So it’s okay. I don’t have the challenges that some of my colleagues have.

These are readily available, mouthwatering and tasty. However, they are bad for you. You would rather consume grilled skinless chicken breast or chicken strips if you want to eat

chicken meat. Whether you buy them from your local restaurant or out of your freezer, chicken nuggets are high in preservatives, fat and salt and has no benefit for your body.

Very few realize the amount of calories contained even in the smallest serving of French fries. Besides high calories, it offers very little nutritional value for your body. Eating french fries are linked

to obesity and raised blood sugar level. Instead I recommend boiled potatoes add a little butter and roast some vegetables with it.

Oh yeah! White rice. You thought it was healthy did you? Not many people know that it is a processed food. Plus a lot of people prefer white rice

People love to eat potato chips as a regular snack not knowing that they are undermining their health. Potato chips are rich in preservatives, salt and calories

and provide little or no nutritional value.

Drinking a lot of soda even the sugar free ones is unhealthy. Do not get fooled by marketing and do not consume even diet soda.

It might have 0 calories, but artificial sweetener is even worse than regular sugar. Yes, it’s okay to have a glass once in a while, but do not drink sodas daily if you care about your health. I always opt for freshly squeezed juices as they are more healthy.

Processed meat does not contain sugar, but they are loaded with preservatives that you don’t want to put in your body. Instead of eating processed meat you can go

for the organic. It can be more expensive, but the hospital bills can be much higher later in your life. Wink!

A lot of households use cereals for breakfast, most of these cereals are rich in added sugars and contain

preservatives and lack dietary fiber. When purchasing your breakfast cereals go for those that contain less sugar and provides lots of fiber.

Most of the blended coffees without the added cream contains approximately 300 calories. If you want to remain healthy avoid blended coffee drinks. Black coffee on the other hand contains 5 calories. So, if

you love to start a day with a cup of coffee, make sure you go for a black one. Black is best!

Everyone loves them, but they aren’t good for your health as they are rich in saturated fat. If you must eat hot dogs try the veggies dogs. They are healthier.

It is an alternative of butter and lots of people use it. If you want to be healthy, don’t be one of them. Margarine is full of trans fats that is linked to many health related problems.

Did youKNOW?Unless food is mixed with saliva you can’t taste it.French fries are originally from Belgium.Apples are more effective at waking you up in the morning than coffee.Cucumbers are 96% water.

because it is easy to cook and relatively cheap, but just like other processed foods white rice offers you little nutrition. If you want to remain healthy consider buying wild or brown rice though it is more expensive and takes longer to cook. Alternatively our locally grown Ofada rice is the best in terms of low calories as it is unprocessed and cheaper.

because it is easy to cook and relatively cheap, but just like other processed foods white rice offers you little nutrition. If you want to remain healthy consider buying wild or brown rice though it is more expensive and takes longer to cook. Alternatively our locally grown Ofada rice is the best in terms of low calories as it is unprocessed and cheaper.

WHAT MAKES A STAFF A TEAM OF PROFESSIONAL?

We got talking and all I asked her is: “Tell me about your last relationship.” When I ask clients that, it helps me to know where they are coming from and their mindset towards relationships. Sometimes, after leaving a past relationship, a lot of people do not leave who they were in that relationship behind but bring it into the next relationship and that can be defeating as it may not fit.

So, I asked her about her past relationship and she told me she had met this guy on the plane on her way from Port-Harcourt to Lagos, and they exchanged pleasantries. He called her later and gave her three phone numbers she could reach him on. He eventually told her that he wants to marry her and that he is not for games. Now, when men talk like that, please be very careful because he may be indirectly letting you know ahead of time that he is a fraud and believes you are a desperate, vulnerable woman who has written on your forehead “I want to marry like yesterday!”

He told her that he wants to meet her people and make his intentions known to them. So, he travels kilometres to meet with them. All these just in two weeks after they met on the plane!

Her people were pleased to meet him and accepted him. None of them probed to find out more about this lone ranger. He later left and visited his new fiancée to let her know he had seen her people.

Get Captivated He told her he works for the UK Embassy in Abuja but that he is a medical doctor and will be travelling to the US to get some equipment for himself so he can establish a clinic in Abuja. He later said he was going to be going to her people’s area again just to do a few things as he gets ready for his trip. Our lady had left her jewellery at her people’s place the last time she visited them and since “her quick husband to be” was around the corner, she asked him to please go to her place, pick up her jewellery and bring them back to her.

He had promised to pass by Port-Harcourt to see her on his way to the US. Her older sister warned her but you know she was so much in love now that she didn’t see any harm that could come out of it. I can understand that. You see, fraudulent men know that when women want to marry at all cost, they become gullible and stop reasoning.

The next time he called her, he was doing so with an unknown number, claiming to be in the US already and couldn’t stop by in Port-Harcourt because he had to change his flight booking. He still

called a few other times with ‘unknown’ number but didn’t give her a phone number she could reach him on and he never spoke about her jewellery.

Another important albeit small element of professionalism is smiling at patients, at co-workers, and at doctors. Professionally, it promotes patient satisfaction.

Research has shown that the sulfates in most shampoos strip the hair of essential oils that lead to breakage. Depending on the activities of an individual, it is safe to wash and condition your hair every 3 to 7 days. Hair should also be deep conditioned every 2 weeks. My personal favorite is Carol’s daughter Monoi repairing set; it is great for damaged hair. It is a rich hydrating product that helps to remove impurities without stripping the hair of its nutrients unlike other shampoos. It leaves the hair clean and strong. When used with the condition, It leaves the hair feeling soft and silky. It also prevents breakage and makes hair stronger. The repair mask is just the icing on the cake. This rich formula contains a blend of butter and oils that will keep the hair shiny and stronger than ever.

Mizani butter rich deep nourishing hair dress is a light moisturizer that serves as a good source of hydration for the hair. Its rich fast absorbing butter blend prevents breakage. It is advisable that you moisturize your hair as often as possible and mainly at night.

A lot of women use different kinds of combs which are harmful to hair follicles and causes hair to break. A wide tooth comb simply combs the hair to give a suitable hairstyle and help in detangling relaxed and natural hair. It may look big but it is more useful and less harmful to your hair and results in less breakage of hair.

Organic Root Stimulator Olive Edge Control is a non -sticky and non- greasy formula used to hold edges down. Whether it’s natural or relaxed, it works. it brings shine and moisture to the hair. It can be used to create beautiful and desirable hairstyles. Try it and say bye to gel.

Most women tend to leave their hair uncovered while sleeping. Make it a priority to use a satin cap to sleep. First you section your hair with the wide tooth comb, combing it anticlockwise, then use the satin cap to cover it. This helps prevent split ends and having to put heat on the hair everyday to straighten it out. Do this for a week and you will notice a tremendous difference in your hair texture.
