Dear Reader,
We are delighted to present our 2018 catalogue, which oers our readers an eclectic mix of new fiction, non-fiction, classics and children’s books from around the world. We are excited to publish a new novel by our number-one bestselling author, Jane Hawking – Cry to Dream Again, a wonderful love story set during the Second World War – as well as a critically acclaimed work by award-winning Iranian author Azareen Van der Vliet Oloomi, Call Me Zebra – an adventure tale, love story and paean to the power of language and literature. We also welcome to our list Alba Arikha, whose novel Where to Find Me deals with strong themes of culture clash, identity, loss and rebirth. As for our classics list, we are proud to add more titles to our series of high-quality, aordable classics, the Evergreens series. All the books in the Evergreens series are ideal for students, as they contain the definitive text and an extensive extra-material section on the author’s life and works, a selected bibliography and extensive notes on the text. Alongside the Evergreens, we are also launching the Great Poets Collection – timeless poetry written by the best-loved poets of all time – and the 101 Pages Series – a selection of unjustly neglected works by well-known authors; we’re also adding to the Quirky Classics Collection – humorous works by famous authors – and the Calder Collection – a legendary list which focuses on edgy titles from twentieth-century literature. All these series oer a vast array of classics which will satisfy all tastes.
We are also expanding our children’s list, with the aim of giving young readers the opportunity to connect with other cultures and literatures: this year sees the publication of a new instalment in Dominique Demers’s Adventures of Miss Charlotte – Miss Charlotte is a modern Mary Poppins, who talks to a rock and wears a large hat and a crumpled dress that make her look like a scarecrow. The New Football Coach is beautifully illustrated by Tony Ross, and is a wonderful tale about believing in yourself. We hope you’ll like our new selection, and we thank you once again for your continued interest in our list.
With best wishes,
Elisabetta MinerviniPublisher – Alma Books

c aLL ME ZEBraAzareen Van der Vl iet Oloomi
After the death of her father, an exiled Ira-nian man of letters, the bookish twenty-two-year-old Zebra fi nds herself alone in New York and decides to retrace the steps of her traumatic fl ight with her family from their homeland in the 1990s, hoping that in the process she will be inspired to write a ma-jor manifesto on literature. Her fi rst stop is Barcelona, where she meets the Italian Ludo, who becomes her lover, intellectual sparring partner and travelling companion in her pic-aresque meanderings around Catalonia.
A natural-born raconteur, Zebra takes the reader on an irresistible journey through her thoughts, as she conceives elaborate theories about art and is increasingly convinced that her mother has been reincarnated as a cock-atoo. Sparkling with wit and mischief and brimming with imaginative vignettes and unconventional musings, Call Me Zebra is a riotous, erudite, unpredictable novel about literature, lust and dislocation.
crY to dREAM AGAINBOOK 2 IN THE IMMORTAL SOULS SERIES
Jane Hawking
From the number-one bestselling author of Travelling to Infi nity: The True Story behind The Theory of Everything
In 1930s Greater London, Shirley is a talented ballerina who dreams of becoming a princi-pal dancer at the Sadler’s Wells Ballet Com-pany. Yet one summer, on the way back from staying with her grandparents in France, she meets a handsome young man, Alan, for a fl eeting moment and her life changes for ever. Finding him becomes an obsession for Shirley and now she longs to fulfi l her dreams in the ballet simply so that he might see her name in lights and know where to fi nd her.
With the outbreak of the Second World War, and those she loves in danger, Shirley’s pri-ority becomes to help in the war e ort, but with Alan appearing once more in her life, and the war threatening to part them for a second time, she knows that she cannot cope if she were to lose him again.

literature as death.”

WHERE TO F IND MEAlba Arikha
Hannah Karalis, a teenager living with her family in 1980s Notting Hill, becomes fas-cinated by her neighbour, Flora Dobbs, an enigmatic elderly woman who has clearly had an interesting past – but the improbable friendship that the two strike up is abruptly cut short by Flora’s sudden departure from the neighbourhood. Eighteen years later, Hannah is astonished to receive a black note-book, which sets her on a quest to discover the truth and to confront the ghosts of an unresolved past.
A gripping and poignant tale of chance en-counters, tangled lies and painful discover-ies, Where to Find Me is an inspiring account of how to face and overcome the e ects of loss and tragedy in our daily lives.
SELEctEd Writ inGSRené Magr i t te
Available for the fi rst time in an English translation, this selection gives non-Francophone readers the chance to encounter the many incarnations of renowned Belgian painter René Magritte – the artist, the man, the as-piring noirist, the fi re-breathing theorist – in his own words. Through whimsical personal letters, biting ap-ologia, appreciations of fellow artists, pugnacious in-terviews, farcical fi lm scripts, prose poems, manifestos and much more, a new Magritte emerges: part Surreal-ist, part literalist, part celebrity, part rascal.
While this book is bound to appeal to admirers of Magritte’s art, there is also much to delight all readers interested in the history and theory of art, as well as lovers of the inner workings of a probing, inquisitive mind unrestricted by genre, medium or fashion.
tHE cutt inG EdGETHE STORY OF THE BEATLES’ HAIRDRESSER WHO DEFINED AN ERA
Les l ie cavendish
The Beatles’ hair changed the world. As their increas-ingly wild, untamed manes grew, to the horror of par-ents everywhere, they set o a cultural revolution as the most tangible symbol of the Sixties’ psychedelic dream of peace, love and playful rebellion. In the midst of this epochal change was Leslie Cavendish, hairdresser to the Beatles and some of the greatest stars of the music and entertainment industry.
But just how did a fi fteen-year-old Jewish school drop-out from an undistinguished North London suburb, with no particular artistic talent or show business con-nections, end up literally at the cutting edge of Sixties’ fashion in just four years? His story – honest, always entertaining and inspiring – parallels the meteoric rise of the Beatles themselves, and is no less astounding.
ABOUT THE AUTHORAlba Arikha is the author of four books. Major/Minor was shortlisted for the Spear’s Award and selected among the best books of 2012 by The New Yorker. Her last book, a narrative poem, Soon, was set to music and performed as an opera at the Riverside Studios, London. In addition to her books, Alba is also a singer-songwriter, has performed in London and Paris and recorded two CDs.
“One hopes, one hunts, for a book that resembles nothing one has read before.
Alba Arikha’s Soon is not only a true original, it’s beautiful, moving and, yes, profound.
Which makes it a rare creature indeed.”

TR ISTRAM SHANDYLaurence Sterne
Purporting to be an autobiography of the antihero Tristram Shandy, Laurence Sterne’s novel is a comic masterpiece of digression, egoism and sensationalism, as its hilarious asides, explanations and host of memo-rable secondary characters – such as Uncle Toby, Dr Slop, Parson Yorick and Widow Wadman – take centre stage, at the expense of the actual life events the book sets out to depict.
A humorous compendium of European thought and literature – pastiching the likes of Locke and Bacon and referencing Pope, Swift, Cervantes and Rabelais – emerges amid the convoluted accounts of Tristram’s conception, misnaming and accidental circumcision by a sash window, in a shrewd narrative that examines the role and nature of language itself.
ULYSSESJames Joyce
Controversial, scandalous, erudite and funny, Ulysses is undisputedly a landmark of twentieth-century Modernism. It charts one day in the lives of three inhabitants of Dublin. Their peregrinations, thoughts and encounters form the basis of the nar-rative, which becomes a celebration of all human experience. Ulysses is both an experimental novel and a book intimately concerned with the events of modern life.
A lively repository of literary allusion and col-loquial realism, this dazzlingly innovative, ambi-tious novel is here presented in its 1939 OdysseyPress version, which is regarded as the most accuratetext published in Joyce’s lifetime. This edition also in-cludes over 9,000 notes by Joyce scholars Sam Slote, Marc A. Mamigonian and John Turner.

While Charles Dickens is best known and cel-ebrated for his prolific journalistic output and novelistic creations, he also devoted some of his creative energies to verse.
At turns sentimental, melancholy, playful, hu-morous and satirical, and ranging considerably in tone and format – from songs to narrative prologues for novels and “squibs” for newspa-pers – the poems in this collection highlight Dickens’s gift for language and his unfailing power to touch.
A literary phenomenon in his lifetime, and re-nowned as much for his journalism and public speaking as for his novels, Charles Dickens (1812–70) now ranks as the most important Victorian writer and one of the most influential and popular authors in the English language.

PANTAGRUELAND GARGANTUA
François Rabela is
With his birth, a monumental exploit in itself, it is clear that the giant Pantagruel is destined to great things, and the novel that bears his name chronicles the remarkable life of the exuberant youth: from his voracious reading habits to his escapades with the knave Panurge and his prowess in battle. The second work in this volume deals with the history of his father Gargantua, whose biography is equally if not more outlandish and larger than life.
But these bawdy and boisterous tales, with their fi xa-tion on food and faeces, are not just entertaining yarns, as François Rabelais, one of the foremost humanists of the sixteenth century, parodies medieval learning, lam-basts the established Church authority and develops his own ideal visions for the ordering of society.
THE FLOWERS OF EV IL
charles Baudela ire
Anthony Mortimer, already praised for his virtuoso translations of Petrarch, Dante and Villon, has pro-duced a new version that not only respects the sense and the form of the original French, but also makes powerful English poetry in its own right. Presented here in a dual-language edition, with extra mate-rial, notes and bibliography.

Candide is an innocent young nobleman who leads an idyllic, sheltered life and has adopted the optimistic mindset promoted by his tutor Dr Pangloss. But after committing an indiscretion and being expelled from his family home, Candide fi nds himself on a journey that will take him to Portugal, Argentina, Britain and Turkey and expose him to torture, war, shipwreck and natural disasters, leading him to question whether he is really living in the “best of possible worlds”.

Published in 1759, when it became a best-seller and stirred up much controversy, Candide is an exhila-rating picaresque romp and a bit-ing satire by one of the Enlight-enment’s major fi gures that still resonates to this day.

THE GHOST-SEERFriedr ich Schi l ler
The brooding, introverted Count von O— arrives in Venice during the carnival in order to escape from his duties and live incognito. But after encountering an enigmatic Armenian stranger who makes an uncanny pronouncement, a bizarre chain of events unfolds, in-volving a Jesuit secret society, a ghostly seance and a mysterious Sicilian magician – leading the Count to question his faith and morality.
First serialized in 1787–89, this multilayered, fragmen-tary novel – which gave Friedrich Schiller a platform to expound his Enlightenment ideas on society and religion – has thrilled and engaged lovers of Gothic literature for over two centuries.
THE TR IALFranz Kafka
On his thirtieth birthday, the bank clerk Josef K. is suddenly arrested by mysterious agents for an unspeci-fi ed crime, and fi nds his life taken over by the opaque bureaucratic procedures. He is tormented by the psy-chological pressures exerted by his legal nightmare.
Published the year after the author’s death, but writ-ten ten years earlier, The Trial is the most acclaimed of Kafka’s three novels, and is both a haunting meditation

c ataStroPHE AND OTHER STORIES
Dino Buzzat i
This volume brings together twenty of the best stories written by Dino Buzzati – author of the celebrated The Tartar Steppe.
From ‘The Collapse of the Baliverna’, where a man is racked with guilt at the thought that he might have been responsible for the loss of many lives, to ‘The Epidemic’, which describes the spread of a “state in-fl uenza” contracted only by people who don’t step into line with the government, and ‘Terror at the Scala’, where the higher echelons of Milan society are gripped with the fear of an impending revolution – these sto-ries show how strange and unexpected events can creep into everyday life and draw ordinary people towards mystery, disquiet and, ultimately, catastrophe.

THE ABYSSAND OTHER STORIES
Leonid andreyev
As the young Zinaida and her sweetheart, the student Nemovetsky, stroll through the idyllic Russian country-side, their memories, dreams and thoughts about life and the future mingle in the evening breeze. But when night falls, they hasten to retrace their steps back to town through a small wood, where they are accosted by three threatening drunkards, who knock Nemovetsky uncon-scious and start to chase the girl through the underwood. When the young student comes round, he is confronted with the horror of what has just happened.
Haunting, disquieting, shocking, ‘The Abyss’ is ac-companied by fi fteen other stories by Andreyev, includ-ing ‘Silence’, ‘The Thief’ and ‘Lazarus’, some of them never translated before into English. Together, they provide a clear account of the lasting legacy of Russia’s foremost man of letters of the early twentieth century.

UTOPIATHE ISLAND OF NOWHERE
Thomas More
One of the indicators of the profound cultural and po-litical infl uence of More’s masterpiece is today’s com-mon use of the word “Utopia” – a term he invented. This extraordinary treatise on the values of rationality and reason – here presented in a sparkling new trans-lation by Roger Clarke and accompanied by copious notes and additional texts – questions what a philoso-pher can do to enact change in society, and how ideal-ized visions can inform political practice.
A new translation by Roger Clarke of one of the most infl uential philosophical works of all time, which ren-ders the original Latin into an English that is clear, read-able and true to the spirit of Thomas More’s writing.
PLAYSanton chekhov
The most widely staged dramatist after Shakespeare, Chekhov left a deep mark both on the development of Russian literature and world theatre, with plays that were remarkable not just for their dialogue but their atmosphere and the tensions expressed between the lines.
Collected in this volume are Chekhov’s four most cel-ebrated plays – ‘The Seagull’, ‘Uncle Vanya’, ‘Three Sisters’ and ‘The Cherry Orchard’ – in a brand-new translation by Hugh Aplin. In these personal stories of unfulfi lled love, failed ambition and existential ennui, set against a background of unsettling social and eco-nomic change, the reader can appreciate the ground-breaking qualities of Chekhov’s theatrical genius.

THE BÉRENGER PLAYSEugène Ionesco
This collection brings together the four plays that fea-ture Ionesco’s everyman protagonist Jean Bérenger. In ‘The Killer’, he comes across a “radiant city”, an ideal civilization which is unfortunately being terrorized by a killer, whom he decides to track down and dissuade from committing any further crimes. In ‘Rhinoceros’, he is the only person in a provincial town who is re-sisting “rhinoceritis”, an a iction that turn its victims into the eponymous horned beasts. In ‘Exit the King’, he is the powerful King Bérenger the First, who refuses to acknowledge that he is dying. And in ‘Strolling in the Air’, he acquires the capacity of fl ight and discov-ers that the celestial vault is held up by a gigantic pink pillar. This volume constitutes a perfect introduction to one of the twentieth century’s most original and in-fl uential playwrights.
S IX PLAYSLuig i P irandel lo
This selection of plays by Luigi Pirandello contains some of his best-known works, such as ‘Six Charac-ters in Search of an Author’ – an absurdist piece in which the characters, actors and Pirandello himself interact during the rehearsal of a fi ctional play within the play – and ‘Henry IV’ – a tragicomic tale of a man who falls from a horse and believes himself to be the eponymous Holy Roman Emperor.
Preoccupied with the nature of truth and delusion, and treading dangerously on the borderline between sanity and madness, Pirandello’s plays are a daring ex-ploration of human actions and the dark motives lying behind them, and the culmination of the naturalistic school of theatre inaugurated by authors such as Ibsen and Chekhov.

Dominique DemersBook 3 in the ser ies • i l lustrated by tony ross
Miss Charlotte – the new coach of a children’s football team – has some odd methods to prepare them for the big match. She decides to teach them to lose! And to have fun. Incredibly, it seems to work, as the kid who was always useless on the pitch suddenly scores a screamer in prac-tice. But will their hopes of victory be dashed when the ambitious star player decides to join the other team?
A marvellous tale about believing in yourself and beating the odds.

Book 1 in the ser ies • i l lustrated by tony ross
Mademoiselle Charlotte, the new teacher, is not like the others: she wears a large hat and a crumpled dress that make her look like a scare-crow, and she talks to a rock. The children think she is crazy at fi rst, but soon realize she makes school more fun than ever, getting them to meas-ure the room with cooked spaghetti in maths class, telling fascinating stories about a gorilla and even taking the pupils on at football.
An entertaining, imaginative and inspiring book that will make you wish you had a teacher just like Mademoiselle Charlotte.
THE MYSTER IOUS L IBRAR IANDominique DemersBook 2 in the ser ies • i l lustrated by tony ross
When the mysterious and eccentric Miss Charlotte arrives in the village of Saint-Anatole to take over the tiny library, the locals are surprised to fi nd out that she does things di erently. Wearing a long blue dress and a giant hat, she takes her books out for a walk in a wheelbarrow and shows the children that reading can be fun and useful. Sometimes she is so caught up in the magic of the stories she shares with her audience that she forgets all sense of reality – so much so that one day she loses consciousness and the children must fi nd a way to bring her back.
A wonderful story about the magical and inspiring power of books.
