The 2011 St Agnes' Longsight AlmanacTRANSCRIPT
Almanac 2011
Welcome! to the Parish Almanac 2011
St Agnes' is a vibrant, friendly and inclusive community of Christians worshipping and working
together in Longsight. Through our worship, ministry and common journeys, we aim to express
the love and joy of Jesus Christ and his care for all people.
This Almanac has been produced with details of major dates, services and meetings for 2011. Although not
every date is listed here, we hope that this new Almanac will help everyone connected with the St Agnes’
community to see an overview of all the worship, ministry, activities and life at St Agnes’.
Although every care has been taken to check dates and times, and to make sure other information is correct,
please note that some changes may be made during the course of the year so it is always best to keep up to
date with the weekly Newsletter or online through the parish website.

How to use this Almanac
Each month carries details of the meetings and extra services together with their times.
Services which happen each Sunday and weekday, and other regular events are not listed on the
calendar but together at the bottom of each page so as to give more room in the Calendar for
your own notes.
At particular times of the year (Lent, Holy Week, Easter & Christmas) special leaflets are
produced with the full list of services and events. Details in church or online.
Sunday names are given for each Sunday of the year.
Days listed in bold type are the principal festivals and holy days of the Church’s year.
Red print is used to indicate the saints and holy days of the Church calendar – the red-letter days
as they are called. This title comes from the fact that the earliest prayer books printed these
saints’ days in red print.
BCP denotes the Communion service is from the Book of Common Prayer 1662
If you have any comments, corrections or suggestions for future additions of this Almanac please
contact us - details on the back cover.
Although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of dates and information in this
Almanac the publisher and compiler cannot accept any responsibility for any inconvenience, loss or
damage caused by information suggested in this publication. This Almanac is produced as a guide
only.
Lyfe Bible Café
Welcome to lyfe... coffee, cake and conversation
lyfe is a new way of engaging with the Bible. It’s about meeting to connect God, you and everyday
life. It’s about encountering the Bible with your heart and mind, in a fresh and vital way.
Using material downloaded from a dedicated website, groups follow a three-step process of
engaging with a particular biblical text. By reading, reflecting and then responding to what they’ve
encountered, the group approaches the Bible afresh.
What is lyfe?
Read
First we read the passage we are discovering
Then we re-read it noting keywords and phrases
Then we read out loud a third time 'listening with the heart' and immersing ourselves and our senses into the story
Reflect
We share our thoughts and questions about what we have listened to and discovered
Respond
We pray and rest over what we have heard
We agree practical action that may change our life
Join us in the Community Hall on the 3rd Monday of each month at 11am

Worship & Faith
Worship is central to the life of every Christian and especially to the life of our parish
Worship is the primary purpose of the Church. In our worship we join with the whole
Church of Christ, living and departed, with angels, archangels and with the whole company
of heaven.
Worship & Faith Group
The Worship & Faith Group was formed a number of years ago to help with the
maintenance and planning of both regular services and special occasions. The group is open
to anyone who in interested in making a contribution.
Discussions and meetings range from the everyday
decisions about times, texts and hymns to more creative
visionary ideas about how the parish might respond to the
'Mission Shaped Church' report and its encouragement of
Fresh Expressions of worship.

one voice
Our focus on Palestine and Israel is a result of a long conversation in a number of groups in
church about how we might pray for and learn about the problems of the Holy Land.
We have chosen to support the OneVoice movement as part of our focus on Palestine and Israel.
Find out more about this project at
www.stagneslongsight.org/action/palestineisrael
OneVoice is an international grassroots movement that amplifies the voice of mainstream Israelis and
Palestinians, empowering them to propel their elected representatives toward a two-state solution. The
movement works to forge consensus for conflict resolution and build a human infrastructure capable of
mobilizing the people toward a negotiated, comprehensive and permanent agreement between Israel and
Palestine that ends the occupation, ensures security and peace for both sides, and solves all final-status issues
in accordance with international law and previous bilateral agreements. The 1967 borders form the basis for
the establishment of an independent, viable Palestinian state, with permanent borders and any modifications
to be agreed upon by both parties. The movement recognizes that violence by either side will never be a
means to end the conflict. Taken from their website www.onevoicemovement.org

Junior Church for children aged 5 and over meets at
10.30am in the Community Hall each Sunday during term
time. A crèche is also available for younger children.
We follow a course of worship, craft, stories, games and
other activities which tie in with the Church's year and
link in with the Parish Eucharist which takes place at the
same time.
Members of Junior Church join the rest of the
congregation part way through the service and in time for
Communion.
Services for those who have been recently baptized at St
Agnes’ and other children up to the age of 8 years old
who want to come to church and play.
Sometimes church can be a bit daunting if you are new to
the building or not used to our Sunday Services so this is
an opportunity to explore the building through games,
toys and play stations and not worry about the noise!
The whole thing includes a proper tea as well so come to
church - God's house - and play!
Welcome to your church...

Community Garden
As part of our vision for the future of St Agnes' we are developing
the grounds around the church building as a Community Garden.
Our first stage application to the Groundwork/Community Spaces
fund has been successful and we are now working on the final
stage 2 process.
This project is a collaboration between the church and local
community to open up the church’s outdoor areas as safe, green
and accessible space for the whole community. The community
garden is the only green space in the locality and this project
seeks:
to provide space for relaxation: seats, tables, simple play structures etc
to provide an interesting creative green environment encouraging all ages to
discover and learn: an area which is safe, accessible for
wheelchairs and prams etc
to develop the existing wildlife area with further woodland
wild flowers encouraging wildlife: possibly including
composting facilities
