Saturday Briefing Page Aloha, LiLi is Wednesday, I, along with my wife Linda and several other members of my family, were pleased to join many of our ‘ohana at a luncheon in honor LiLi Hallett. LiLi will be leaving Outrigger early next month after an exceptional 20-plus-year career. LiLi said that while she is sad to be leaving the Outrigger ‘ohana, she is excited to be embarking on a new career path, starting with a rigorous eight-week training course at the International Butler Academy in the Netherlands. Accordingly, we surprised LiLi with “Jeeves,” dressed in tuxedo and white gloves, ready to be her personal butler for the afternoon! Bula, Fiji!By Dr. Chuck Kelley

My family and I recently had the pleasure of returning to the Outrigger on the Lagoon - Fiji. Una Murray (Public Relations Manager) was kind enough to help us with all of our trip details and arranged a very special stay. After lunch in the casual Baravi Bar by the pool, General Manager Darren Shaw escorted me on a tour of the property where I was able to personally meet with each employee. I was most impressed with the extraordinary “Bula Spirit” displayed by all, and the outstanding condition of the property. I was proud to see that our team created a top-notch resort that truly reflects our company values. We departed with warm feelings as the staff sung the famous Fijian farewell song “Isa Lei.”

Outrigger Employees Make Their Mark on Waikiki

By Ethan Chang

A lot of sand, some imagination, and creative teamwork all came into play at the Outrigger Sand Sculpture Challenge held two weeks ago on the beach at Waikiki. Hosted by the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach, and originally geared for Outrigger guests, this weekly fun summer activity was adapted to an Outrigger team-building activity to celebrate our value of ‘Ohana. Teams from the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach, the Outrigger Reef on the Beach, Embassy Suites® - Waikiki Beach Walk®, Wyndham Waikiki Beach Walk, Courtyard by Marriott Waikiki Beach, and two teams from Company Services participated in the first Outrigger Sand Sculpture Challenge. The event was a huge success and captured the attention of many hotel guests and onlookers who stopped by to take pictures. The seven teams of employees and managers brought their “A” game as well as buckets, shovels, and other special tools to create their masterpieces. The goal was to make a tasteful sculpture in one hour, made up of only sand and water. In the end, all teams exhibited teamwork, innovation, and creativity to produce great sculptures. The Outrigger Waikiki team carved out an immense Sponge Bob cartoon figure. The Hawaiian green sea turtle captured the imagination of three of the teams, with the Marketing department, Wyndham Waikiki Beach Walk, and the Outrigger Reef creating TheEmbassySuites®-WaikikiBeachWalk®team

varying sizes of turtles for their designs. It was all about branding for the group from Embassy Suites - Waikiki Beach Walk, who crafted the Embassy “E” into the sand. One of the Company Services team had some fun “burying” a snowman in the sand! The competition was fierce, but in the end it was the Courtyard by Marriott Waikiki Beach who walked away with the coveted “Golden Pail and Shovel” award with their “Miss Green M & M” sand sculpture. Also recognized that morning was the Wyndham team who took the prize for “Best Costume.” With overwhelming positive responses and comments, participants hope to make this an annual employee event.

Multi-Cultural Day Held at Outrigger Twin Towns Resort

By Gavan Conway

The Outrigger Australia team recently celebrated Multi-Cultural Day at the Outrigger Twin Towns Resort to honor the Outrigger value of Wahi (Place). Everyone got into the spirit of the day by dressing in national costumes to celebrate their heritage. A sumptuous luncheon of special dishes featuring the cuisines of Thailand, Papua, New Guinea, India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Malaysia, the Philippines, United Kingdom, Australia, and of course Hawaii was enjoyed by all. Similar to the U.S.A, Australia is a relatively young country built on immigration, which started just over two hundred years ago with the arrival of the First Fleet in 788. Today we are a nation of people from all corners of the world who proudly call Australia home, and it is this rich tapestry of cultures that makes Australia such a friendly and prosperous country. Multi-Cultural Day was deemed a great success, and according to Grant James, Australia’s Regional General Manager, it will become an annual event Down Under.

Beneath beautiful blue skies and a warm early morning sun, a dozen Outrigger Heart & Sole walkers participated in the American Heart Association’s 6th Annual Heart Walk. The event raises funds for the treatment and prevention of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. The event, held at Kapiolani Park, included a -mile walk around the park, a 4.-mile trek around Diamond Head, musical entertainment, special presentations, and health and wellness exhibits. This was Outrigger’s first year of participation and we discovered that it’s a huge family affair. The American Heart Association’s Heart Walk was also a symbolic 2009 season finale of our Outrigger Heart & Sole Walking Program. Special thanks to Mercedes Lanza, Lauren Chow, Monica Fo, and Dr. Chuck Kelley for their invaluable contributions toward the success of Outrigger’s first company-sponsored employee walking program. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to all our Outrigger ‘ohana who came out and joined our scheduled company walking activities. We are looking forward to an exciting 200 Heart & Sole season beginning next April.

Roaming Gnome Enjoys Outrigger WaikikiBy Nancy Daniels

The Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach has welcomed many VIPs over the years. This past week was no exception when the Travelocity Roaming Gnome checked in for a few days during a whirlwind trip to Hawaii! Like many Outrigger Waikiki guests, one of the first things the Roaming Gnome did was to get his feet wet with a surfing lesson courtesy of UV Rays beach services at the Outrigger Waikiki. It wasn’t long before he was “hanging ten” with the rest of the surfers enjoying the waves off Waikiki. Next on the agenda was outrigger canoe surfing, and once again the Roaming Gnome looked like a pro as he glided to shore. After drying off, he hit Duke’s Waikiki for a quick bite and a refreshing “Lava Flow” drink! Later that afternoon, he was off to Germaine’s Luau for an evening of ono food and lively entertainment! The visit of the Travelocity Roaming Gnome to Hawaii was part of a six-week “Summer of Possibilities” promotion by Travelocity, one of the largest travel companies in the world. Throughout the promotion, Roaming Gnome fans and followers on Facebook and Twitter voted between rival summer destinations to decide on where he would travel for his next great adventure. During the fifth leg of the journey, Hawaii was up against Jamaica and Cancun, but the people of Hawaii voted furiously and came through in the end. After more than 00,000 votes, Hawaii beat out Jamaica and Cancun to host Travelocity’s Roaming Gnome. It was great fun having the Travelocity Roaming Gnome at the Outrigger Waikiki. Not surprisingly, wherever he went, people knew who he was and would come up to

have their picture taken with him. We applaud Travelocity and their marketing team for creating such a brilliant campaign, and congratulate the people of Hawaii for pulling together to bring the Roaming Gnome to our island state. The publicity generated locally, as well as world-wide through the social network sites of Twitter and Facebook, was tremendous in promoting travel to Hawaii. As with any VIP visit, pre-planning and assistance during the visit is required, so I’d like to extend special thanks to a few people: Liz Lee of Travelocity and the Roaming Gnome escorts Regina Brizollara and Mona Hansan, Ross Anderson and the Duke’s Waikiki team; Jeff Smith of UV Rays and the Beachboys of Waikiki Beach Services; and finally, Outrigger’s Arhlene Honda, Kimberly Agas, Ethan Chang, Gay Shinbara, and Patsy Narimatsu.

• LiLi also served as the Condo Division’s main HR representative, and her contribution there has been immeasurable.

• As we began the massive Waikiki Beach Walk® redevelopment in 2003, LiLi served as the lead HR professional, handling its numerous people issues. Closing hotels to start construction required major changes. LiLi worked with the Human Resources Service Center to develop and implement a highly successful one-time voluntary Early Retirement Program. She also orchestrated the monumental task of helping the remaining employees transfer to other properties. With care for every affected employee, creativity and formidable energy, LiLi got it all done and kept morale high.

• LiLi has also served as the lead HR professional whenever Outrigger has assumed a management contract or exited a property. LiLi spends hours meeting one-on-one with employees to discuss their needs and concerns. She always takes the time to care for each person as an individual, which often means speaking to employees, and even their families, extended families, and friends, on all shifts—days, nights, and weekends.

LiLi earned the President’s Award in 2000, and the prestigious Po‘okela Award for either Exceptional Leadership as an Individual or in the Leadership of Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a for 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2007. Born in Taiwan, LiLi speaks fluent Chinese, so she was called on to translate SaturdayBriefing into Chinese and often interpreted for other employees. LiLi has an uncanny ability to apply her excellent business judgment to complex situations and get right to the heart of the matter quickly. Those who have worked with LiLi have come to admire her character and the way she works:

• Integrity: LiLi works through any issue with common sense, compassion, uncompromising fairness, passion, and the ability to establish trust. She is patient with everyone who comes to her for assistance.

• Caring and Respect: LiLi is sought after by employees whenever they have problems, and by managers and executives who value her counsel about sensitive issues. She treats everyone as an individual, is a strong advocate for employees, and seeks solutions that offer dignity and respect to everyone involved. Caring is the byword in everything LiLi does.

• Excellent communication: LiLi knows that it is important not only to carry out, but to explain decisions. She helps employees feel heard, is always accessible, and follows up as much as necessary to ensure appropriate closure.

Although she knew little English when she arrived in Hawaii 30 years ago, LiLi overcame that obstacle and went on to earn both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication from the University of Hawaii. She has two children, daughter Victoria, who works at a global energy company in Honolulu, and son Kekoa, who will start at Santa Monica Community College this fall. LiLi’s love for Outrigger and for our ‘ohana is immeasurable. Her commitment and personal contributions have been exemplary, and I can confidently say that LiLi has made a great contribution to Outrigger’s success. LiLi, on behalf of the entire Kelley family and your Outrigger ‘ohana, we extend our sincere gratitude to you for your unwavering loyalty to the company and our employees. You will always be part of Outrigger. We wish you Godspeed as you pursue your coursework in the Netherlands and enter the next phase of your career. Mahalo nui loa, much love, and every good wish for good health, prosperity, excitement, and growth in your new adventures, and many more blessings.
