Alphabet knowledge is an important early literacy skill. An alphabet chart is a useful teaching tool to increase alphabet knowledge. Simplified Strategies provides free alphabet charts in English and Spanish.

The ‘Easy Guide: Alphabet Chart’ provides families with an alphabet chart that can be used as a tool to increase alphabet knowledge. Your child may be encouraged to use this chart in a number of ways. For example, when singing the alphabet song together, encourage your child to follow along on his or her own alphabet chart, pointing at the letters while singing at a slow pace. Also, your child can be encouraged to refer to his or her alphabet charts when beginning to attempt to write his or her own messages. The pictures that go with each letter provide helpful cues when children are learning beginning letter/sound relationships. Your child can also use the alphabet chart with dotted lines to cut out and create his or her own memory games.

Alphabet knowledge is a known predictor of progress in reading instruction. Children should typically recognize almost all letters by name, name most letters and name and recognize some letter sounds before entering kindergarten. Frequent, repeated exposure to each letter in meaningful and playful contexts (not drilling) helps children learn about the alphabet.

For families

As a parent or family member, your unique understanding of your child’s abilities, modes of learning, and interests will allow you to decide the most effective way to use the alphabet chart as a learning tool. Giving your child individual attention and having fun together is the best way for your child to learn- whether by singing, writing messages, or playing games related to the alphabet.
