Welcome to Alphacrucis College (AC), a centre for education and influence. It is my pleasure to introduce our 2015 College Prospectus. AC is at the forefront of equipping leaders for careers of influence in theology, ministry, business, leadership, teaching, music, chaplaincy and counselling.

AC has been the national ministry training college of the Australian Christian Churches since 1948. Thousands of our graduates are making a difference for Jesus in churches, businesses, government, classrooms and not-for-profit organisations. AC has developed a strong reputation for its unique combination of academic acumen and Pentecostal spirituality, with faculty members becoming leading world experts in their field, hosting international conferences and regularly publishing in scholarly journals. Our small class sizes ensure a high quality and interactive experience for students, and our online delivery options allow for flexibility for students to study no matter where they are located.

Our vision is to be an Australian Christian university. We believe that becoming a Christian university will revolutionise the academic and educational landscape of Australia. Students will be equipped not just for careers of success, but for careers of significance, with our Christian worldview being a core part of every course we offer, from business to teaching. We see this goal as an opportunity to equip future generations of leaders across religious, social, economic and political sectors. AC has great potential to influence our nation and our world by becoming a Christian university.

As you look through this Prospectus my hope is that you find it informative as you read about our fantastic range of courses and campuses. I also hope that you are inspired by the stories of our students and graduates. We welcome any questions you have about our courses and it would be our privilege to partner with you for a life of influence.

THEOLOGY

The Faculty of Theology is central to the vision and mission of Alphacrucis College. Incorporating biblical studies, pastoral ministries, mission, and systematic theology, the school is responsible for teaching about the various elements of a Christian worldview. It seeks to show how Christianity helps to shape personal identity and behavior, and contributes to social justice in Australia and globally.

The academics of the Faculty of Theology are a team of highly qualified and experienced teachers and ministers. Senior faculty are widely published, with the school having developed a particular expertise in the history and theology of Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. More importantly, past students have praised the classroom experience; enjoying the depth of knowledge, the different lecturing styles, and the opportunity to reflect upon difficult and sometimes controversial topics.

Because faith informs the whole of life, the subject Christian Worldview is a core unit for students enrolled in any program of the college, including those studying in business, chaplaincy, and education programs. The awards offered in the Faculty of Theology include vocational certificates (which can be taken in local churches), diplomas in ministry and leadership, undergraduate degrees in ministry and theology, postgraduate master programs, and doctoral degrees.

Graduates of the school can pursue a wide range of vocations, including leadership and pastoral ministry in local churches, local and international social justice work with NGOs, chaplaincy, and teaching positions in colleges and churches. It is also the case that many people choose to study the Bible and theology to enrich their understanding of the gospel while they continue to work in their professional careers.

MISSIONS AND CROSS CULTURAL MINISTRY

At AC, we train missionaries with a difference. Our programs are designed to provide you with a high quality education in a small and supportive group setting. We are passionate about serving our students, but we are also passionate about serving people at home and abroad who are isolated from a relationship with God by cultural and linguistic barriers. For that reason, we have a wide range of modules, subjects, and programs delivered in many different ways at various levels of study to overcome those challenges.

Missions and cross cultural ministry can be studied within a range of AC courses, including the 10036NAT Diploma of Ministry (Cross Cultural Ministry), Bachelor of Ministry (Cross Cultural major), Master of Arts (Cross Cultural major) and Doctor of Ministry.

Throughout the year we offer short courses including STINT (Short Term Intercultural Nationwide Training), a four day intensive training program that prepares participants for short term mission trips of up to one year. Participants gain tools that could take years to acquire without training - these can really make the difference between an effective and satisfying, or a disappointing and frustrating, short term mission venture.

For students seeking a more in-depth look into cross cultural ministry, the six week World Harvest Institute intensive is available. The World Harvest Institute grew from the need for solid basic training for people intending to make a career in missions. Since its inception in 1986, World Harvest Institute has trained thousands of successful missionaries in Australia, Britain, New Zealand, Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia. Its graduates

have been successful ministers of the Gospel of Jesus in dozens of countries. Founders, Pastors Kevin and Glenys Hovey, were long term missionaries in PNG and, remembering their own early field experiences without significant preparation, knew the value of pre-field training.

BUSINESS

The Faculty of Business is a growing area in Alphacrucis College that builds on AC’s many years of delivering high quality theological education, and our record of educating effective leaders for churches, businesses and not-for-profit organisations. We are passionate about equipping our students for successful careers of significance.

From diploma, masters and doctoral level courses, all of our programs have been designed to give you a high-quality business education in a supportive and small group environment. AC has a distinctive and integrative Christian mission, with the Christian Worldview class being a part of every course. This integrative mission has an intellectual dimension, as well as providing opportunities for you to develop the personal and communal disciplines to sustain fruitful, long term work in the world of business.

Our lecturers are leaders in their field and have taught in universities across Australia and overseas. Bringing years of experience in business, as well as their widely published scholarship, our lecturers are committed to the Christian mission and values of AC.

For pastors wishing to add study in business to their theological and ministry training, we hope that training in leadership, accounting, finance, business law, human resources, marketing and economics will give you the skills to be a more effective pastor, as well as giving you better insight into the world of the business men and women you pastor.

Graduates of our program can pursue a diverse range of occupations, not only working in the church, but also in the marketplace and in not-for-profit organisations.

AC is a college proudly in the Pentecostal Christian tradition, but we welcome students of other Christian traditions, of other faiths, or no faith. We are an Australian College, but have strong overseas connections. We welcome students who may come to Australia to study, or who make use of our state-of-the-art facilities through the Global Online campus.

“LEADERSHIP BUILDS CHURCHES, MINISTRY BUILDS PEOPLE.”- DR. IAN JAGELMAN

STUDY A MASTER OF LEADERSHIP

Page 27: Alphacrucis College Prospectus 2015/16

Good leadership is fundamental to the growth of any church. AC seeks to equip leaders of influence in our growing movement for the cause of Christ.

Dr Ian Jagelman, the Program Director for AC’s Master of Leadership, began his research on leadership over 30 years ago. His research and discovery into leadership found its origins in his own experience as a church planter struggling to see his church numbers grow. Ian says, “We planted a church that grew to 30 in its first year, 130 in the second year and 230 by the third year, and then it just stopped growing. We prayed more, fasted more. Our ministry was getting better but what I really needed to learn was how to be a more effective leader.”

When Ian first started researching leadership he found that the literature on leadership mostly looked at the character of the leader but did not offer any practical tools or models on how to be an effective leader. When looking for leadership literature Ian says, “I had to go outside Christian literature and look at effective, respected methods, tools and models in the marketplace. Some of them were completely inappropriate for church, but in many cases the issues faced by marketplace and the church were much the same.”

Ian’s research resulted in him making the vital distinction between ministry and leadership, coming to the conclusion that, “leadership builds churches, ministry builds people.” The exploration between these distinct roles and their purpose

has formed the basis of Ian’s books on leadership and the Master of Leadership program at AC. Ian says, “I love the verse from Psalm 78:72 where it says, ‘David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skilful hands he led them.’ (NIV) You need them both – it can’t just be skills. Nor is it just the spiritual journey – it’s both. The design of the course is to bring everything together. Our goal from the very first class is that students will take home something that will help and change their church.”

Ian’s Top 3 Tips for Leaders

1. Without a plan, visions perish.Invest at least 10 minutes every week to take time out and consider, “How can I move from a vision to its fulfilment?” Devote time to envision what you want to see happen at church, or in your area of ministry and think of what you need to do and how you are going to do it.

2. Record what you are learning Every month, ask yourself, “What have I learned about becoming an effective leader?” Collect this information in a journal and keep adding to it. If you’re not growing – the people you lead are not growing.

3. Develop leadership teams, not just ministry teams. As your church and ministry grows, focus on building leadership teams, as distinct from ministry teams. This will prove to be a powerful way to grow your church or ministry.

Whether you’re looking for a career change or to upgrade your qualifications, AC is able to individually tailor the program to your needs, and our flexible blended learning style is ideal for those balancing work and family commitments. The Faculty of Education aims to produce graduates who embody integrity, professional knowledge, social skills, and will make a positive contribution to society. It develops the professional skills necessary to teach the full range of primary curriculum and trains students in how to engage with communities of practice for ongoing support throughout their careers.

The Master of Teaching (Primary) provides a core of pedagogy in each of the Key Learning Areas (KLAs) along with professional experience. Students will also explore areas of interest through an elective component. Students will undertake ongoing action research in their place of employment, improving their own teaching skills and contributing to their research field. In addition to developing skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills, the graduates will be equipped with advanced knowledge of theory in the full range of primary curriculum, preparing them for classroom teaching.

The Master of Teaching (Primary) is currently the sole award that is offered by our Faculty of Education however there are plans for more awards to be made available in the near future.

Our graduates of the Master of Teaching (Primary) may find employment in schools (faith-based, government and non-government schools), not-for-profit and mission-focused organisations, community service-orientated positions, and positions that require research skills and critical thinking. Additionally, graduates may progress further in the

pathway toward doctoral studies upon completion of their Master of Teaching (Primary).

What is Christian education? Is it the schooling that happens in Christian schools? Here at AC we believe that the tangible expression of Christian education comes from the heart of the Christian educator rather than the schools where it occurs. It stems from the drive, motivation and calling of the people rather than the school’s performance and operations. We believe it is more authentic to consider and applaud the heart of the Christian educator which is inspired and empowered by the Holy Spirit. If we do not acknowledge the work of the Holy Spirit we can miss the sustainability and true distinctiveness of Christian education.

CHAPLAINCY

Chaplains are an integral part of our communities, providing care and support to those in need in a variety of settings. Hospitals, schools, sports, prisons, aged care facilities, and disaster settings are just some of the areas that chaplains provide much needed support. Chaplains help people work through life issues, assist in times of crisis and provide a safe place for people to share their story.

We offer a range of training options which start with Chaplaincy Essentials, which is the first step in completing both the Certificate IV in Pastoral Care and the Diploma of Ministry (Chaplaincy). The Cert IV training covers subjects such as loss and grief, pastoral care emergencies, communication skills, mental health, suicide prevention, suffering and spiritual distress, as well as disaster and crisis response. The Diploma caters for those wanting more advanced training and who are considering leadership roles in this field.

Our trainers all have experience in chaplaincy and pastoral care which enables them to teach practical skills as well as theory. Hear their inspiring stories as they share some of the truly remarkable experiences they have had the privilege of being involved in.

Burn out and lack of self care are dangers in the helping professions. The professional supervision training we offer is taught by experienced and accredited supervisor trainers and helps equip people to care for the carers in both clinical and pastoral settings.

Many students testify to the amazing transformational journey they encounter as they train to work in this ministry. Prepare yourself to truly make a difference through your care for people in need and pursue a rewarding career in chaplaincy.

신학학사 (Bachelor of Applied Theology): 기존의 신학사 과정(B. Th.)

Baulkham Hills is a lively and booming suburb with a strong sense of community. AC’s Baulkham Hills campus is located at Hillsong International Leadership College (HILC), where our Bachelor of Theology degree is offered in partnership with HILC. Studying the Bachelor of Theology at the Baulkham Hills Campus will enable you to be connected into Hillsong Church, attend Hillsong College chapel services and be a part of a life-giving student community. A popular option for HILC students, who have completed a Diploma or Advanced Diploma and want to continue their studies, is to cross credit subjects from their HILC award towards the Bachelor of Theology.

“Dear friends,

Alphacrucis College’s vision is to become an Australian Christian university. This vision is endorsed by the leadership of Australian Christian Churches, AC’s parent body. Since 1948 the College has been training men and women for effective Christian ministry. This continues to be a strong emphasis of AC and is being enhanced by the college offering education and training for the broader marketplace. AC’s mission is to equip Christian leaders to influence all spheres of society, including business, education, politics, media, and arts and entertainment. This is reflected in the College’s growing array of vocational and higher education awards.

Australia needs a Christian university to prepare current and future generations of leaders for lives of influence and significance across all spheres of society. We believe that becoming a Christian university is an important step towards transforming the cultural and social makeup of Australia. AC offers a quality alternative for students who are seeking an education that incorporates Christian worldview and values. The achievement of university status will enhance AC’s capacity to expand its range of educational offerings and to equip Christian leaders to influence all spheres of society. With significant financial support from Australian Christian Churches and business people, AC is steadily progressing towards its vision.

Alphacrucis College, in partnership with Australian Christian Churches, has great potential to influence our nation and the world by becoming a Christian university.”

Warmest regards,

Wayne AlcornACC National President

Sarah Jane Lancaster was from 1909 until 1934 the Pastor of Good News Hall in Melbourne, the first Pentecostal church in Australia. She could rightly be called the founder of Australian Pentecostalism. Sarah Jane was an innovative minister, willing to pioneer new ideas and creative methods of ministry. Her innovation resulted in a flourishing church. While Sarah Jane’s approach was innovative in its time, it wouldn’t work today. If she could come back and visit a contemporary Australian Pentecostal church she probably wouldn’t recognise it as a direct descendant of the church she founded and led.

The author Isaac Asimov is credited with stating that “The only constant is change!” It is an axiom that all leaders understand intuitively. What worked yesterday won’t necessarily work today, and what works today won’t necessarily work tomorrow. Leaders face the constant challenge of adapting themselves and their organisations to an ever changing context. It was the issue that Sarah Jane Lancaster faced as leader of an Australian church in the early twentieth century. It is an issue that is even more accentuated in the early twenty-first century. Change is constant and relentless and occurs at an unprecedented rate.

Organisations successfully adapting to this tsunami of change are replacing old hierarchical bureaucracies with sleeker, faster structures powered by a rich diversity of people, ideas, and technical competencies. In the twenty-first century, more than any other time, relationships will be pivotal to organisational success and failure. Twenty-first century leaders must develop a new understanding of their role. They will have to abandon notions of the organisational leader as aloof and possessing all information and power. They will have to understand themselves as coaches, inspiring and empowering individuals and facilitating teamwork. Leadership will be the setting of vision and organisational direction, the management of change, and the inspiring of optimism, enthusiasm and commitment throughout the organisation. Twenty-first century leaders will need to be strongly relational in their approach.

Christianity offers rich resources for understanding the leader as a relational being. The Bible provides us with a remarkable insight into God’s nature, that God is three and one, three in one. The very life and existence of God is a demonstration of relational community. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit live in eternal harmonious community. Christianity understands humankind as being created in the image of this triune God. Therefore, to be human is to be relational. We need to live in community and to be loved and valued.

When we apply Trinitarian theology to organisational understanding, the picture that emerges is that an organisation is likely to function at its optimum when there is a fundamental equality of persons expressed in mutual giving and receiving. The more an organisation is characterised by symmetrical and decentralised distribution of power and freely affirmed interaction, the more it corresponds to the nature of God and the more likely it is to unleash the human potential of its participants.

Leaders who will successfully guide their organisations through the constantly changing environment of twenty-first century society will recognise the need to unleash the human potential within their organisation. They will adopt a leadership style that makes this possible. The Christian understanding of the triune God who dwells in eternal relationality and of humankind created in his image provides the basis for a relational and collaborative approach to leadership. The effective organisational leaders of the twenty-first century will seek to be coaches and carers as much as they are commanders.

“EVERY PERSON HAS A STORY AND IS MORE THAN CAPABLE OF HELPING THEMSELVES. SOMETIMES IT’S TEMPTING TO STEP INTO A SITUATION AND ASSUME THAT WE HAVE ALL OF THE ANSWERS OR SOLUTIONS.”

A passion to serve those affected by, and at risk of, human trafficking on the Thai-Burma border motivated AC graduate Ruth Lesmana to move to Thailand three years ago. While studying for her Bachelor of Ministry, Ruth developed an interest in anti-trafficking movements through AC’s student-led missions initiative, Sounds of Silence, and from going on a number of short-term mission trips to Thailand. Ruth felt called to the Thai-Burma border to serve displaced people affected by the long running civil war. Through her ministry with Global Alms Incorporated, Ruth helps to transform the victims, and communities at risk of human trafficking. They build partnerships with organisations in the area, teaching English and vocational skills, assist with natural farming sustainability projects, and raise goats and chickens. Ruth tells us in her own words about her hopes, advice and how living on the Thai-Burma border has changed her perspective.

What is your hope for the people that you minister to?My hope is that they would come to understand their inherent value and worth and to be equipped and empowered to achieve their own dreams and goals. Most of the young women and children who we work with are stuck in situations where they are forced to meet certain expectations of providing for their families, or they are exploited for other peoples’ gains, or can’t go outside of their own home due to having no identification papers. Our aim is to see them rise above this and become confident leaders within their community.

What is your advice to students considering overseas mission? One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned has been the fact that every person has a story and is more than capable of helping themselves. Sometimes it’s tempting to step into a situation and assume that we have all of the answers or solutions. But spending time learning their background, culture, and language is often half the battle. Ask God to show you which community He is breaking your heart for. The need will always be great, but it’s His leading and our commitment which will make us stay to build genuine relationships with people. This allows us to shift our focus from saying, “This is what we can do for you”, to constantly asking, “How could we support you?”

How has living on the Thai-Burma border changed your perspective on life? It’s challenged me to think about the things I take for granted, such as having citizenship (and a passport!), access to quality education, and health care. It has also opened up my eyes to the daily struggles and difficulties which refugees and migrants have to go through, including those who have resettled in another country. It constantly reminds me of the strength and determination which people possess, and how genuine communities can be.

From a career as a Business Analyst to starting his PhD at Macquarie University this year, AC graduate Craig Hall experienced more than a career change when he came to study at AC in July, 2012. Having already studied a degree in Economics, Craig was looking to become a pastor and lecturer through study at a postgraduate level. Craig says, “Stepping into AC to study has opened up more opportunities than I could ever have imagined. These two years have laid a foundation for the rest of my life and was one of the best decisions I have ever made.”

Studying the Master of Arts (Christian Studies) provided the launch pad for Craig’s venture into his career change, and the support he received was in contrast with his previous studies. Craig says, “I have studied at University and the difference is stark. At AC the teachers are pro-active in educating within a community atmosphere, and are always accessible. AC teachers know the power of a positive word.”

Craig’s interest to become a pastor and lecturer originated from teaching an introduction to the Bible course for 3 years at his local church. Studying at AC has extended Craig’s understanding of

the Bible’s significance saying, “I have gained the revelation that much of what ancient historians know about Rome and First Century cultures at the time of Christ comes from the immense socio-historical evidence that lays within the New Testament texts. Ancient historians, including secular ones, keep a Bible close at hand for reference (even if they don’t publicly say so!).”

While at AC, Craig was heavily involved in the life of the college, serving on the AC Academic Board and presenting his research at the monthly Colloquium series. Craig says, “The AC teachers have been overwhelmingly supportive, always, and I mean always, encouraging me to have confidence in my scholarly abilities, and they opened doors of opportunity wherever possible. The AC teachers have encouraged me to aim as high as possible and to believe those heights are achievable.”

Craig leads a Connect Group and helps the Service Pastor of his local church to oversee volunteers and the service systems and processes. With active ministry and beginning his PhD, Craig says, “When people ask me what I want to do next I reply, ‘preach and teach’.”

The freedom to explore his beliefs in a new light has revolutionised Joel Hingston’s faith. Studying the Bachelor of Theology through AC’s Baulkham Hills campus was the right fit for Joel who attends Hillsong Church and currently works as a trainer at Hillsong International Leadership College. Joel says, “Studying with AC has allowed my understanding of faith to be challenged. Largely due to the wide variety of sources and perspectives that AC’s courses employ, I was encouraged to question and analyse views and to think critically. There has been a nice level of freedom throughout my studies that allowed me to search my system of beliefs in a safe and well guided environment. Now at the end of my Bachelors Degree my faith is stronger and more vibrant because of this freedom.”

Studying beyond the basics of doctrine and biblical studies was where Joel’s revelation transpired, “The adventure takes place when handling other areas of focus that aren’t as set in stone. I found that AC prioritises critical thought married with historical research, which made for an invigorating experience and freedom of imagination. I was able to seek God and study biblical text in a way that I found relevant and fresh, as

well as being holistically informed and well researched.” Moved by the ethics class, Joel was led to rethink his views on animal treatment, environmental issues and stewardship. Joel says, “I make active efforts to not support the killing of animals or the processing of animal products. I am convinced that living this way would be better for my own health and the health of the environment, as well as decreasing my participation in the global systems that maintain the lack of balance and justice for humans and animals alike.” A standout for Joel has been his study of the Koine Greek language which transformed his understanding of how the Bible was put together saying, “It really helped bring the New Testament (and other ancient texts) to life and has given me tools to help with my own hermeneutics and understanding of the message of the text.” Learning to be comfortable with paradox has led Joel to gain the insight that balance and context are key when considering perspectives and views. Joel says, “I’ve learned that it’s ok to challenge an expert’s ideas, and that the Christian community flourishes from questions.”

“I WANT TO ALWAYS TEACH WITH THE MINDSET THAT THE NEXT AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER COULD BE SITTING IN MY CLASS.”

Page 79: Alphacrucis College Prospectus 2015/16

Su Pheng’s passion for teaching was sparked after volunteering at a community school in Peru, “It broke my heart to see that some children in the world may never realise their full potential because they lack the necessary resources and teachers to do so. It made me value the role that education plays in building and maintaining society, for without education society would struggle to raise its next generation of leaders.”

Su Pheng enrolled into AC’s Master of Teaching (Primary) program as a way to impact the next generation. The unique blended learning style of the degree with online study mixed with face-to-face intensives appealed to Su Pheng. It enabled her to work part time as well as maintain her family and church commitments, which includes leading a young adults ministry.

Realising that God’s glory can be reflected not only just at church, but through her choice of work was a revelation. Su Pheng says, “It has changed my understanding of glorifying God through my profession. My faith is more than just being involved in church ministry and it extends to my study and work life. I now go to work knowing that I don’t just fulfil a task or job title but that there is a plan and purpose behind everything that I do and say at work. The most important revelation that I took away from my study is that teaching is a way of life and that God created within me the nature and heart of a teacher, so no matter

what occupation I find myself doing in the future, I will always be teaching, coaching and leading people to reach their full potential.”

Supported and encouraged throughout her studies at AC, Su Pheng says, “The AC teachers have believed in me more than I believed in myself, they have been an example for us to follow and inspired us by sharing their own personal stories. They have shown me the highest level of dedication and passion for what they do.”

Inspired to be a teacher that makes a difference to her students, Su Pheng says, “I hope to be a transformative teacher, one that supports my students to understand concepts and not just memorise content. I hope to inspire and guide my students’ thinking in a way that develops self confidence in their ability to succeed through any challenges. I want my students to remember what they gained from being in my class for years down the track, and I want to always teach with the mindset that the next Australian Prime Minister could be sitting in my class. The impact that I will have will be Christ focused, believing in the full potential of each child and giving them the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in life. At the end of the day, my ministry is wherever I go, whether I am at work or in a school teaching or studying, the people I encounter along the way are my ministry.”
