Task 1 (P6) - Using the Alpha CAM software,
(Drawing 1)
a) Draw the components provided
CNC - level3 Rui Gaspar Simoes June 2015
b)Pick correct tools and add tool paths
In this stage, the aim is to create the geometry component using the geometry menu.
To create the shape of a rectangle billet of material, the rectangle icon is selected. Next step is to create
the geometry for the holes using the circle icon. The edges and the middle geometry are designed using
the line and arc icons.
CNC - level3 Rui Gaspar Simoes June 2015
Next step is to set up the material using the command 3D→Set Material, picking outline of the rectangle and
inserting values to Material Top Z and Material Botton Z.
Material type is selected by default.
Material is chosen using the command Machine→ Select Material and opting out for Aluminium.
After that the tools need to be selected clicking on Machine→ Select tool and selecting the 10mm flat, for instance.
Next, the tools directions are set up using Machine → Tool Directions. In the dialogue box, the following options
are chosen:
Then select the edge of geometry where the machining needs to be started.
After the Rough/Finish is set up using the command Machine→ Rough/Finish and follow the next dialogue boxes:

To add tool paths
In case it is necessary more than one tool path, insert how many milimeters of stock to be left should be
set up, as shown in above image. (Machining → Stock to be Le))
After checking the information, click OK to proceed further. Then select the outside profile to machine
and press finish to continue. The cutter path should appear in red.
To finish this stage, Lead IN/OUT is set up by selecting the command Machine → Tool Lead IN/OUT.
Select Arc in Lead-in and Lead-out.
Then click at the top of the geometry to select the tool path where we would like to beginning the
Rough/Finish.

c)Graphically simulate (to find and correct errors)
To drill the holes, select D4 Drill, for example ,by clicking on Machine → Select tool and then select
the command Machine → Drill/Machine holes → Drill/Tap holes. In the dialogue box enter
information provided below:
Then select the circles to be drilled with the mouse.
In this step, select the command VIEW→3D SIMULATION and run the programme to check for
errors.
CNC - level3 Rui Gaspar Simoes June 2015
d)Process the tool paths to produce a NC program for the final drawing.
