Instructions

Shawl body

Cast on 9 sts.

Row 1 (RS): k1, yo, k7, yo, k1

Row 2 (WS): k2, yo, p7, yo, k2 (Please note! To avoid unsightly holes along the selvedge, yarn overs from the previous row are to be worked through the back loop.)

Row 3 (RS): k2 (selvedge sts), “3 from 1” into the yo, k7, “3 from 1” into the yarn over, k2 (= selvedge sts). (Please note! “3 from 1” is worked as [ktbl, yo, ktbl].)

Row 4 (WS): k2 (selvedge sts), yo, p to last 2 sts, yo, k2 (selvedge sts)

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 259 sts (not counting selvedge) in a WS row. This WS row will look as follows: k2 (selvedge sts), yo, p259, yo, k2 (selvedge sts).

One pattern repeat has 20 sts, making for 13 pattern repeats width-wise. (For symmetry, the last pattern repeat will have only 19 sts). A greater or smaller number of pattern repeats may be worked to achieve a larger or smaller shawl.

Work the following RS row as shown in Chart 1.

Don’t forget!

At the beginning of every RS row, after the 2 selv sts, work [ktbl, yo, ktbl] into the yarn over from the previous row.

At the end of every RS row, after all pattern repeats acc. to chart, before the last 2 (=selv) sts: “3 from 1” worked as [ktbl, yo, ktbl], then k2 (selvedge sts).

At the beginning of every WS row, after the 2 selv sts, make a yo.

At the end of every WS row, before the last 2 (=selv) sts, make a yo.

These increases are worked until the edge starts. For increases within edge pattern, please refer to edge chart.

Lace pattern

Row 1, see also chart: k2 (selvedge sts), “3 from 1”, work pattern repeat 12 times width-wise. In the 13th pattern repeat, stop before the last (p) st, i.e. after the ssk, work “3 from 1”, k2 (selvedge sts).

In WS rows, work all sts as they appear (k the k’s and p the p’s), unless otherwise indicated.

For the short version, work shawl body, Charts 1, 2, 3 and 4, then Chart 7 = short version edge.

For the full version, work shawl body, Charts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, then Chart 6 = full version edge.

Binding off When binding off the edge sts, treat the first two sts and the last two sts (selvedge) as one st and work the picot already from this one st. Detailed instructions for binding off can be found on the page with the edge chart.

Chart 1 – Overview (larger on page 7) – This chart shows only RS rows. Read from right to left.

Chart 2 – Overview (larger on page 7) – This chart shows only RS rows. Read from right to left.

Don’t forget!

At the beginning of every RS row, after the 2 selv sts, work a “3 from 1” as [ktbl, yo, ktbl] into the yarn over from the previous row. At the end of every RS row, stop before the last 2 (=selv) sts, then work “3 from 1” into the yarn over from the previous row [ktbl, yo, ktbl], now yo, k2 (selvedge sts).

At the beginning of every WS row, after the 2 selv sts, make a yo.

At the end of every WS row, before the last 2 (=selv) sts, make a yo.

Example: Lace pattern, Row 1: k2 (=the 2 selv sts, always knit), from the prev. row yo, make “3 from 1”: [k1, yo, k1], work the pattern repeat 12 times in all. In the 13th repeat, stop before the last st (which is a purl), meaning right after the ssk, make “3 from 1” [ktbl, yo, ktbl]into the prev. row yo, now k2 (=the 2 selv sts, always knit).

In WS rows, for now, work all sts as they appear (k the k’s and p the p’s). This will change later.

Chart 3 – Overview (larger on page 8) – This chart shows only RS rows. Read from right to left.

Chart 4 – Overview (larger on page 9) – This chart shows RS and WS rows. Even numbered rows (WS rows) have to be worked from left to right. Odd numbered (RS) rows right to left.

Please note! This chart shows RS and WS rows. Read and work even numbered (WS) rows from left to right. For left half of shawl, increases have to be worked mirror-inverted (symmetrical) to right half. If you are making the short version, after Chart 4, continue with Chart 7 (short version edge). For the full size version, after Chart 4, work Chart 5, then continue with Chart 6 (full version edge).

Chart 5 – Overview (larger on page 8) – This chart shows RS and WS rows – Only for full version Even numbered rows (WS rows) have to be worked from left to right. Odd numbered (RS) rows right to left.

Please note! When both odd and even numbered rows (RS and WS rows) are shown in charts, even numbered rows (WS rows) have to be worked from left to right while odd numbered rows (RS rows) are worked from right to left. In Row 1 (RS) of edging, at begin of row after the 2 selv sts as well as at end of row before the 2 selv sts, make “3 from 1” [ktbl, yo, ktbl] into the prev. row yo. This increase is worked here for the last time. Beginning with Row 2 of edge chart, after the selv sts, directly continue from chart. No more increases from now on.

Finishing Having just finished the last RS row of the chart, in the following WS row, bind off all sts with the help of a crochet hook. Bind off loosely – a crochet hook one size bigger than the needles might be helpful here. Sc-tog the first two sts and work a ch3-picot from the resulting sc: *ch1, sc1 into the prev row yo, ch1, sc1 into the prev row st+picot*. Repeat between * and * to end of row.

Fasten off, secure end and hide tails. Wet block / steam block shawl.

From the designer Thank you for purchasing my first pattern. Every purchaser of this pattern will receive a little Thank-you gift – another pattern free which will be published in September 2014. This pattern has been test knit. Pattern translated from the Russian original by Katharina Sokiran.
