Hart Wildlife RescueA £5000 grant has been

awarded to HART Wildlife Rescue by Hampshire County

Council. The funding, awarded by Councillor Ken Thornber, Leader of Hampshire County Council, will go towards purpose built aviaries and outbuildings, and construction of a pond. “It is vital that Hampshire’s

natural environment and rural heritage is conserved and enhanced so that visitors and residents can continue to enjoy all that it has to offer,” he said. “Thanks to the work of this charity, over half of the sick, injured or abandoned wild animals that they take in can be returned to their habitats. Hospital manager Chairman Greenland-Jones was delighted to hear the news. “We have been exceptionally busy since we moved to Soldridge Park just over a year ago,” she said. “Admissions are up by 188% and we are desperately in need of the larger mammal and water bird accommodation. “Our planning application was granted in April but

we have been unable to proceed due to lack of finances. Hampshire County Council’s grant will make a huge difference to this project and we hope this vote of confidence in our operation will encourage further generous donations. “We have already taken in 847 animals this year and currently have 105 on site including 34 hedgehogs and 10 tawny owls. We are managing to cope but it does mean a lot of juggling animals around and having to make do with less than ideal accommodation. Obviously with an increase in the number of casualties, running costs are even higher than before, so any donations

are very welcome. A large quantity of newspapers is used each day and the charity is looking for a reliable source to keep supplies topped up. The charity’s funding comes entirely from donations, the majority of which is generated by its shop in Alton. It currently provides a rescue, treatment and rehabilitation service for wildlife throughout Hampshire not supplied by any other organization, as well as offering advice to vets, the RSPCA and members of the public.

Most repairs are completed in a few hours, and usually cost less than your insurance excess, so you needn’t lose your no-claims bonus. Using the latest methods and best quality products, the repairs are kept as small as possible, while maintaining a quality finish you would expect from a body shop. The operator is the business owner, and each job is treated with the same exacting standards, which have given Auto Brite many years of satisfied repeat customers. Quiescent, Dormant or Sleeping?

When I talk of horticultural espionage in the garden, I am not of course

referring to moles, but other shallow cover agents.

If you listen very carefully, higher than the frequency of the snail and the ladybird, is the ping, spring and death rattle of your seeding plants splitting their dry pods and heads, spilling, shooting, projecting their assets, down to the darkness beneath. Like brown, fat bellied pocket watches wound tight, clusters of cells in perfect mathematical structures, as precise as armoured honeycomb, lie waiting, ticking; they are sleepers, programmed to respond to the code words........... ‘Warmth’ and ‘Moisture’ so their dormancy can be broken.

September is the month when I collect many seeds and take cuttings of my unreliably hardy plants to secure stocks for next year. All my Penstemons and tender Salvias...... leucantha, involucrata, confertiflora, discolor etc..... have performed well and produced flowers from June that will run right through until the first hard frosts. I like to strike cuttings in perlite, a sterile, free draining medium; these cuttings will easily survive if they can be kept on the dry side and frost free. When good top growth appears in the New Year, pot them on into 9cm pots.

For the seeds, I use small gummed brown envelopes to keep my diverse treasure ... Of course annuals and biennials produce a lot of seed and once collected, if the seeds move freely on a sheet of dry paper they are ready to be packaged and labelled. Seeds are alive and therefore respire, so should only be dried superficially; avoid using plastic containers, a

cool, dry situation will suffice for storage.

It is fascinating to collect a selection of seed pods and heads, to examine them with their contents at closer quarters and marvel at the familiar echoes within great building architecture... Simply look at Aquilegia, Aconitum, Crocosmia, the Nigella pepper pots, Allium, Stemmacantha and consider that, as far as one’s viewpoint is concerned, I always feel that the Designer steps back, where the Horticulturist steps in; the Botanist steps in even closer and they see that the Sleepers have one eye open.

September 2011 sees the launch of a new garden design practice

based in Alresford. Local resident, George Phillips is the owner and designer behind GWP Garden Designs. George says, “Our aim is to provide beautiful and aspirational gardens that will last a lifetime. Paramount to us is attention to detail, commitment to quality, and good old fashioned customer service.”

Like the gardens that he creates, George’s journey to becoming a professional garden designer has been an evolving one. Originally with a BSc Hons in Environmental Biology, the lure of working

in Australia led to a career in the IT Services sector. Ten years later, and with much encouragement from his wife, George has returned to his passion for plants, gardens and the outdoors.

Leaving IT behind, and enrolling at the respected Sparsholt College near Winchester, George has gained an FdSc in Garden Design as well as the RHS Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture. During that time, he has been working as head gardener at a large country house, looking after long borders, a box parterre and gravel garden, a walled garden, and an extensive kitchen garden.

new Garden design Practice based in AlresfordFollowing an initial consultation, the design process involves the production of a client brief. After surveying the garden, concept plans are then produced, and once an idea is selected, George sets to work on producing master, construction, and planting plans. Using the market leading CAD software, he is able to produce highly detailed plans and construction drawings, but is equally at home in creating hand drawn work.

Working closely with quality local contractors, GWP Garden Designs can oversee the construction phase of the process to ensure that

the design is built exactly as required. George is also more than happy (actually enjoys!) to get his hands dirty during the planting stage and sources only quality plants from leading nurseries.

“Being based from home with a young family has its challenges, but taking the leap to change career has been hugely rewarding. I’m looking forward to the exciting times ahead.”

To book an initial consultation with George, please call 07799 274378 or email [email protected]. For further information, please visit www.gwpgardendesigns.co.uk

The announcement was made as the site was presented with its prestigious Beacon plaque by Simon Johnson, Tennis Operations Manager for Hampshire and Isle Of Wight (IOW)

To achieve this status, facilities must also offer access to quality, affordable coaching as well as regular competitions for all ages and abilities. Simon Johnson, Tennis Operations Manager for Hampshire and IOW, said: “The team at Don

Perrin Tennis have done a fantastic job in the last year to take tennis to the masses. In obtaining Tennis Clubmark and Beacon accreditation they're now a shining example of how to offer free and affordable tennis to hundreds of local people. Working with local tennis providers like Don Perrin Tennis will really help to build healthier and safer communities, as well as ensuring that anyone wanting to pick up a racket can do so in a quality local environment.”Come along and meet the coaching team at their FREE open morning on September 3rd 10am – mid-day on the tennis courts at Perins School, Alresford. Lots of fun tennis games & competitions – come and have a go!

IT'S SHOW TIME AGAINS

et amid the tranquil surroundings of Tichborne Park, this year’s Alresford

Show promises to be Hampshire’s grand finale to the British summer.

Last year 20,000 visitors enjoyed a great day out at the show. Now in its 103rd year, it’s grown in popularity as a proper old-fashioned country show with something for every member of the family. The organisers hope that thanks to the proven traffic layout that traffic queuing should be minimal.

The show opens at 9am; admission costs just £13 for adults, £9 for senior citizens and children under 14 go free when accompanied by a fee paying adult. Advance tickets are reduced by £1.50 if purchased by 31st August. Call the ticket booking office on 08700 115007 or buy them at Morgan Hardware and Country News in Alresford, Scats in Winchester and the Post offices in Bishops Waltham and Petersfield. You will beat the queues at the gates with a pre – purchased ticket! If you do need to pay by credit or debit card at the gate you will find a much speedier system in place this year.

New attractions in the main ring include sheep racing and a sheep dog display, which should be great fun and very informative, while the new Retraining of Racehorses Class will show off the versatility of the thoroughbred.

The best of Hampshire’s livestock will be on parade again in the main ring, including some unusual rare-breeds. The vintage tractors and machinery section has been expanded to provide a fascinating contrast to the sophisticated modern machinery on display. It’s very dog friendly, so visitors can bring their own and perhaps enter the dog show as well admire the

local packs of hounds, beagles and bloodhounds.

With over 200 trade and craft stalls the Alresford Show caters for all shoppers. The WI and other local food producers

will be providing a real taste of local produce, from buffalo

burgers from Broughton Buffalo to watercress based goodies from

Cresson Creations, and there’s plenty of room to picnic under the park’s ancient oaks.

And since no real country show is complete without an old-fashioned beer tent, the show has a brilliant watering hole stocked with local ales from the Flowerpots Brewery as well as the Naked Grape and the Chestnut Horse Bar.

This year the members enclosure has been revamped into a members’ club with Mange 2 supplying the catering. You can relax and enjoy the main ring events from the exclusive members lawn or the grandstand seating. Also new this year is a members ‘shop and drop’ service. For details on how to become a member visit www.alresfordshow.co.uk

In keeping with the show’s charitable roots, all profits raised are distributed back into the community via local charities.

We should also remember another kind of Harvest, which Jesus spoke about. In the Gospel of John chapter 12 verses 23-26, Jesus spoke about a seed falling to the ground and dying, ie the seed being 'sown'. When that happens, in due course, a plant begins to grow, according to the type of seed sown. In that illustration, Jesus was describing Himself - how He is like a seed, verse 24: He died and rose again, and as a result would bring much fruit - a Harvest! If we want to be part of that 'Harvest of people' - people who belong to Him, then we must do as Jesus said in verses 25 and 26 and change our priorities, and align ourselves with Him and His ways, and accept what He has done for us.We can take for granted the harvest that gives us our food. But we cannot take for granted that we are automatically included in that Harvest of people that belong to Him. For this (according to verses 25 and 26) we must take action urgently, as opportunity is running out.

NEW COMPUTER SYSTEMOur current computer system is nearing the end of its life and so we are replacing it. The new system will enhance the way we can record and retrieve information and so improve our delivery of care. The changeover will happen in the first two weeks of November. The existing patient records will be transferred to the new system and detailed checks carried out to make sure that this has happened correctly. To minimise disruption we will be increasing the number of appointments before and after the change over period but will reduce bookable appointments for a few days; urgent appointments will be available in the normal way. Please bear with us while we make this improvement. If your repeat prescriptions are due in the period, 31 Oct - 15 Nov, you can help us further by ordering early.

FLU CLINICSWe are going to start our flu clinics earlier than usual because of the new computer system and we ask that patients try to attend the clinics as early as possible. The walk in clinics dates will be from 1.00 – 2.30 on:

Tuesday 20th September Wednesday 28th September Tuesday 11th October

Dates for pre-bookable clinics will follow and will be advertised here next month together with visits to Residential Homes and Preston Candover Village Hall

Patients who will be over 65 as at 31 March 2012 and those in at risk groups (see below) are recommended to have a vaccination which includes protection against swine flu.

rampant reindeer, high cats & mad Goats

There is evidence of animals deliberately c o n s u m i n g

hallucinogenic plants and fungi. One such species, which reindeer go to great lengths to search out, is the fly agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria). Eating the toadstool makes reindeer behave in a drunken fashion, running about aimlessly and making strange noises! Fly agaric can be dangerous because it also contains toxic substances. Reindeer seem to metabolise these toxic elements without harm, while the main psychoactive constituents remain unmetabolised and are excreted in the urine. Reindeer herders in Europe and Asia long ago learnt to collect the reindeer urine for use as a comparatively safe source of the hallucinogen.

Another hallucinogen used by wild animals is the African plant iboga (Tabernanthe iboga). It has been reported from Gabon and the Congo that boars, porcupines, gorillas and mandrills will dig up and eat the powerfully hallucinogenic roots.

In the Canadian Rockies, wild bighorn goats take great risks to get at a rare psychoactive lichen and by scraping it off the rock surface they can wear their teeth down to the gums. On the prairies of the south-west US, horses and other grazing mammals can become

addicted to hallucinogen-containing plants known generically as locoweed. These plants, mainly species of Astragalus and Oxytropis, are normally avoided, but animals that try them can come back time and again for a repeat fix. Symptoms include altered gait, aimless wandering, impaired vision, erratic behaviour and listlessness.

In South America’s rain forests, jaguars have been filmed behaving in a kittenish manner after gnawing the bitter roots and bark of yage (Banisteriopsis caapi), a hallucinogenic vine that is also used by native tribes in ritualistic ceremonies. Some anthropologists believe that man first learnt to use the drug after watching jaguars. Indeed when cats sense the bruised leaves or stems of catnip, they may roll over it, paw at it, chew it or lick it, all the while inhaling the aromatic oil. They tend to leap about friskily or roll on the ground, but they may also show signs of drowsiness or anxiety. The effects last for five to 15 minutes, after which puss will not be sensitive to another dose for at least an hour.

Which all goes to show, the animal world has its fair share of junkies too!

each box. Packed boxes must be available for collection no later than the week commencing 6th November. Full details are also available on the Rotary Club website.

Commenting on his first few weeks as President, Gary said, “ The year does seem to rush by. No sooner have the Perins pupils returned from their adventure weekends as part of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, than we’re contemplating Autumn,

the Alresford Show, and then, on Saturday November 5th - the Fireworks! Tickets are the same prices as last year and will be available from the Courtyard Shop in Ropley, as well as County News and Keats in Alresford from October 3rd. You can meet and natter to some of our members at the Alresford Show, where once again we will be trying to keep the pedestrians separate from the horses. Who knows - you may feel that Rotary is one way you could put something back into the community. We are looking for men and women to help extend the range of the services and personal help that Rotary provides. Maybe this year – you could make a difference?” For more information about Rotary and how to join visit: www.alresfordrotary.co.uk. You can also follow Alresford Rotary on Facebook & Twitter.

Once again the Rotary Club of Alresford is encouraging all

local residents, businesses, schools, churches, pre-schools, clubs, societies and other organisations to become involved in the Rotary Wessex Christmas Shoebox scheme and to bring great happiness to children in Tanzania, Montenegro, Albania and Romania, many of whom will never have previously received a present.

Gary Ellis, Rotary President, said yesterday “Last year the Rotary Clubs of Alresford and of Four Marks and Medstead contributed 637 boxes of presents towards a total of 27,434 collected in the Wessex area, but with New Alresford alone having a population of well in excess of 5000 surely we can do better this year?”

“If you are buying the new shoes for the school term – keep the box, fill it and make someone else’s Christmas.”

The scheme leaflet, which contains full details of what is and isn’t permissible, in particular to comply with the requirements of International Customs, is available now from James Pinniger ([email protected] or ring on 01962 738788). One copy of the scheme leaflet is required for

Elliot Galvin has played the piano since the age of 6,

instantly gravitating towards jazz for its freedom of

expression. He has performed with a number of well-

established musicians already, despite his age of

only 20 years. He has also performed at a number of

notable venues with his own trio (comprised of his own

compositions), including The Vortex, where he was met

with a glowing review. He has a broad range of taste

and ability, studying composition as well as jazz at Trinity

College of Music (where he received a scholarship to

study). He has studied with Robert Saxton and Stephen

Montague for composition. He cites his musical influences

as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Paul

Bley, György Ligeti and Igor Stravinsky, amongst others.

He also takes influence from the artistic works of painters

such as Mark Rothko and the poetry of Dylan Thomas.

Laura Jurd is a London based trumpet player, composer

and jazz musician. A diverse musician, she plays and

writes a wide variety of music, drawing upon classical,

jazz and folk influences. Currently studying at Trinity

College of Music, Laura has particular interests in jazz

and contemporary classical composition, studying with

trumpet player Chris Bachelor and composer Issie Barratt.

She was recently awarded the 2011 Dankworth Prize for

Jazz Composition. In the past, Laura has also studied with

jazz trumpet player Steve Waterman, principal trumpet of

the Philharmonia Orchestra, Mark David and composers

Martin Read and Errollyn Wallen.

As a trumpet player Laura can be found playing with

a number of ensembles including the London Sound

Painting Orchestra, Tomorrow’s Warrior’s Jazz Orchestra

and the Elliot Galvin Group (EGG). She also leads her own

quartet which can be found playing jazz venues around

London and the South East. Influenced by Stravinksy,

Messiaen and Bartok as well as Miles Davis and the

European improvised music scene, Laura is currently

working with a string quartet and improvising musicians,

in a project which combines elements of classical

composition and improvisation.

Alresford Over Sixties Catering Services is a new not-for-profit

organization of volunteers in Alresford and District, started recently by local ex-Army chef Paul Harrison. Paul wants to develop the catering services he has been providing to charities and pensioner groups at a low cost for the past couple of years. Now, working with his partner Liz Smith-Bingham plus various friends and volunteers from the local community, some of whom are on unemployment, disability and other state benefits, Paul and his team are building a reputation for hard work and good food for community events.

Since producing a Christmas dinner for the Makins Court

residents in Alresford last year, Paul and AOSCS have been offering a regular Sunday roast at Makins Court, with the agreement and encouragement of Winchester City Council, and support from the Alresford Co-op. The Alresford Town Trustees have allowed the use of the yellow town minibus to collect diners, and return them to their homes, for the normal fee, so that some diners have been brought in from around the town. With a regular client list of over 30 diners, these reasonably priced monthly roast dinners have become popular already, and Paul hopes to increase the frequency to more than just once on the first Sunday of the month, the current schedule.

catering for the over-60s, up to the 101s.A Mayoral seal of approval for AOSCS came on August 7th, when Councillor Barry Lipscomb, the Mayor of Winchester, and his wife attended a special birthday event for one regular diner, Mrs Eileen Jolliffe of Alresford; Eileen was 101 this week, and her birthday was celebrated in style at Makins Court, with sherry donated by Bookers Chichester, other drinks from the Naked Grape in Alresford, a birthday cake from Heidi’s Patisserie, and flowers from Floral Design. A week earlier Paul and his staff had cooked the annual BBQ for fifty of the Makins Court residents and their friends, an event financed by the Alresford Pigs Association and the Alresford Co-op. The gazebos erected in the grounds were mainly

needed as sunshades, on a very good day for a BBQ, and Rev Dawn Carn of Alresford Methodist Church led the diners in singing some golden oldies.

To volunteer, or to enquire about attending future lunches, please contact Paul or Liz at AOSCS, on 01962 808316.

great deal. If you need your carpets cleaned

and are looking for an award-winning company who will arrive on time, will be courteous, respectful and above all trustworthy - then you're invited to take advantage one of the three extraordinary value, high quality, carpet and upholstery cleaning deals we're offering new customers -- because we want to give you the chance to get to know our service and to find out how impressively new, fresh and bright your carpets will look when cleaned and freshened by The Carpet Care People.

UpholsteryWe specialise in cleaning and refreshing three piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you'll see!

CurtainsOur new curtain cleaning service is carried out in your home, right where they hang. It's a fuss-free way to have your curtains cleaned and refreshed and is often the 'finishing touch' to spring cleaning a room!

Our approach is simple:We are proud to run a celebrated professional carpet and upholstery cleaning business, and we insist on providing you with good old-fashioned service and value.

Call now and find out why our award-winning service is probably the most requested carpet cleaning in the local area. The next thing for you to do is call us on 01962 690 005 - we'll welcome your call, answer your questions and take care of everything for you.

Tel: 01962 690 005FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Here's a selection of frequently asked questions, especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don't quibble if the area is a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen TVs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden extra costs' The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

I stand by my view that when the sun shines, a holiday in this country is as good as anywhere on earth.

We did get away in the end, all very last minute but a sun-baked week in Devon with the kids and the dog was food for the soul. Back at my desk in the constituency I had grand plans to catch-up but the awful events of last month changed all that and I was among those MPs recalled to Parliament in the aftermath of the riots. We were luckily spared the violence in Winchester but as I made clear to the Prime Minister, that does not mean we were unaffected. I was overwhelmed by the response from local people who got in touch with me and I am crystal clear, this was criminal behaviour that made me very angry indeed. It is totally unacceptable and needs to have serious consequences for those taking part.

As I made clear to David Cameron, I believe there is clear support among my constituents for the police to have tough and robust tools at their disposal when faced with this sort of mob behaviour in the future and that absolutely should involve the use of rubber bullets, water cannon and the suspension of unhelpful social media such as Blackberry Messenger where necessary.

Longer term I do think we need to address some elements of our society which are broken and in my opinion it goes right back to the family and schools where all too often respect and responsibility have become strangers, especially to young men. Of course this is a broad statement, and there are many areas with a much bigger problem than ours, but there is a major issue in any society when children grow up seemingly not knowing the difference between right and wrong.

The rioters (and they were not ‘protesters’ much as the BBC tried)

were not driven by the coalition's cuts but the violence we saw was in my view one consequence of fundamental problems in the way Britain has been run over many years. To begin to understand the mayhem in some of our cities, look at a set of figures on literacy rates that were published just before the riots began and they will shock you. A full 63 per cent of white working-class boys and just over half of black Caribbean boys at the age of 14 have a reading age of seven or less. Meanwhile Britain has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies in Europe and we have a welfare system that locks in worklessness and can often mean you are better off (financially at least) on benefits than you are finding a job.

The new Government has an opportunity and maybe (just maybe) the events of the past month will give our Prime Minister a new hearing for his truly radical education, welfare and justice policies as well as a renewed context for what he so eloquently described as “Broken Britain” before he entered No.10. He will have my full support for any proposals that are measured, evidence based and above all, refuse to be part of any knee-jerk response to the popular press.

One other thing in closing; thank you to the many local people who responded so positively to my Summer Tour which made its first stop in Alresford recently.

If you missed us you can always pop along to my street surgery which is being held on the morning of Saturday 10 September on the corner of Broad and West Street. You can find more on all my work locally via www.stevebrine.com or 01962 791110.

TO MAKE THE CRèME PâTISSIèREPut the vanilla in with the milk and bring to the boil. In the mean time, beat the yolks and sugar until they form a ribbon then mix in the flour. Add the milk little by little and continue stirring. Put the mixture back in the pan and cook for few minutes, stirring continually so as not to burn the bottom of the pan.

TO MAKE THE SOUFFLéS –For each individual ramekin you will need 2 tabs crème pâtissière, 1 egg white beaten very stiff and a dessertspoon of Grand Marnier.Set the oven at 200ºC. If you have prepared the crème pâtissière in advance and it has cooled, warm it up on the stove, (but no more than lukewarm) and add the Grand Marnier. Beat the egg whites until they are very stiff. Butter the ramekins and pour some sugar to coat the inside, remove any excess sugar. Pour the crème pâtissière mix into a mixing bowl and very gently fold in the egg whites with a wooden spoon. Fill each ramekin; they must be “over full”. Put in the heated oven and cook for approximately 20/25 minutes, or until risen and brown. DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN while the soufflés are cooking. When ready, have some castor sugar ready and sprinkle quickly over the soufflés and serve at once.

The ONLY difficulty of the recipe is the oven. You need a good oven!! Next month, the recipe will be a savoury soufflé.

• 1/2 Litre milk• Three eggs• 200g Sugar• 75g Flour - sifted• 1/2 Vanilla stick

SOUFFLéPER RAMEKIN• 1 Beaten egg• 1 Dessert spoon Grand Marnier• Softened butter and caster sugar to line the ramekins.
