EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION
KIM DONALDSON Attains Perianesthesia Nursing CertificationCongratulations to Kimberly Donaldson, RN, CAPA, who recently achieved professional certification by the American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification.
Kim, who is a perianesthesia nurse in Same Day Surgery, has been in her current position since 2014. She has been employed at Hanover Hospital for a total of 32 years, hired directly after nursing school graduation. After first working in the coronary care unit and the hospital’s historic coronary/mobile van under the direction of the late Dr. Bathon, Kim moved to the Emergency Department and served on the hospital’s first Medic 46 mobile care unit. She remained in emergency nursing until transferring to PACU, where she has “learned a different type of nursing.”
Kim says she decided to pursue her CAPA certification “to challenge myself to rise to higher standards to prove my commitment to my nursing practice, thanks to the encouragement of my preceptor, Sharon Roth.” With her certification, Kim is now able to apply the knowledge of the “how and why we care for patients in the way we do. It reinforces the specialized knowledge needed for perianesthesia nursing.”
A member of the Ambulatory Service Line Committee, Kim also serves on the hospital-wide Patient Experience and Evidence-Based Practice Committees. “I constantly strive to improve efficiency throughout our department with new ideas and connect resources available throughout the hospital.”
“Making a difference in our patients’ lives, and helping them return to their normal style of living,” is what Kim finds rewarding about her work. Also, to “reach the confidence of providing quality care to patients in the way that so many of my nursing mentors who paved the way for me have done. Hanover Hospital has a lot of dedicated, hard-working, empathetic nurses, and I am proud to be among them!”
MARYANN HORN Achieves Post Anesthesia Nursing CertificationCongratulations to MaryAnn Horn, RN, a staff nurse in PACU (post-surgical recovery), who recently obtained Post Anesthesia Nursing Certification (CPAN) from the American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification (ABPANC).
MaryAnn, who has been a PACU nurse at Hanover Hospital for over 22 years, says she decided to pursue CPAN certification as a “validation of my current knowledge and experience in the PACU setting,” and “for a sense of achievement and personal satisfaction.”
Having the certification, she feels, increases her professional credibility, and also benefits her patients. “While studying for the exam, I learned a lot of new information.”
Asked what she enjoys most about her work, MaryAnn replies, “Assisting my patients through the post-op period and helping make them feel better.”

Dr. Ketan Shah Obtains Board CertificationCongratulations to Ketan Shah, M.D., who recently obtained board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine. This accomplishment demonstrates to his patients and peers that he has the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for providing excellent patient care.Dr. Shah, a member of the Hanover Medical Group hospitalist team, joined the Hanover Hospital Medical Staff in 2013.
When the Patient Accounting department received a surprise visit from the Finance Department bearing a Pay It Forward goodie basket, it gave Patient Accounting staff the opportunity to “Pay It Forward.”
“It didn’t take long to decide that we would choose the HIM (Health Information Management) department,” explains Julianne Thompson, on behalf of the Patient Accounting staff. “Throughout the year, their constant assistance to our staff is ongoing, working readily and hand in hand through the daily tasks of healthcare paperwork. They are all so appreciated!”
The Patient Accounting staff also took the opportunity to include a fond tribute to HIM’s late director, mentor and friend, Pam Owens, by creating a “butterfly basket” in remembrance of her. “Although the entire hospital family felt the loss of this special lady, it is her staff who has felt her absence the most. Each staff member was able to take a butterfly in her memory, with a smile. This was our way of saying, we are here for you!”
“It has truly been a double blessing to be able to reach out to them by paying it forward with lots of goodies, and be able
to lift their spirits which in turn, lifted ours as well!”
Tracey Bevenour, on behalf of HIM notes, “not only were we surprised to be the recipients of the Pay It Forward basket, we were touched by the kindness and thoughtfulness of our friends and coworkers in the Patient Accounting Department. They recognized the loss we were feeling and went above and beyond in their generosity and support. I know we all miss Pam, our mentor, colleague and friend, very much.”

The first winner of this award for the month of October was the Progressive Care Unit (PCU), for their requesting and accepting the challenge of moving telemetry monitoring to their unit and achieving rhythm strip interpretation quality data scores between 97-99% for the past several months. As an extra special gift along with the card, the unit received a ceramic sealed glass candy jar filled with chocolates.
Congratulations to all staff on the Progressive Care Unit for achieving such high standards in the area of quality of care for our patients.
The Nursing Quality & EBP Council has been in existence since 2012. The group meets monthly with representation from the majority of nursing departments, as well as Care Management and Pharmacy.
Our mission is to foster a commitment to the pursuit of quality at all levels by monitoring the appropriateness and effectiveness of nursing care provided to our patients. While assessing and ensuring compliance with established standards of care and practice, performance indicators are based on evidence-based practice and established benchmarks.
Since the beginning of this council, the group has researched the literature to determine best practices and developed an abstract and poster, which has been presented during the annual York EBP Consortium. As we progressed and learned together as a group, our focus moved toward half of our meeting time being devoted to nursing quality and clinical practice.
Recently, the Council decided that an award would be presented to the unit/department that has demonstrated significant progress in simply helping their department develop a quality program, etc. The award is called the Peacock Award. At the end of our two-hour meeting, the group votes on who should receive this award for the month. The winner receives a personalized “Peacock” card inscribed with the following poem:
“ Stand tall and stand proud Spread your feathers and smile out loud. You’ve done great work…our patients can feel it. Time for the Evidence-based Practice Council to reveal it!”

Congratulations to the staff and providers of Hanover SurgiCenter, for achieving accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Accreditation distinguishes this surgical center from many other outpatient facilities for providing the highest quality of care to its patients, as determined by an independent, external process of evaluation.
Status as an accredited organization means the Hanover SurgiCenter has met nationally recognized standards for the provision of quality health care set by AAAHC.
The AAAHC has notified the SurgiCenter that “As an ambulatory health care organization that has undergone the AAAHC Accreditation Survey, your organization has demonstrated its substantial compliance with AAAHC Standards.”
Congratulations to Denise Fake, RN, Administrator and the entire SurgiCenter team on achieving the full 3-year accreditation!

Congratulations to Elliott Kohr, Cherry Tree Rehab, who was “caught” role modeling all of the FOCUSED Standards of Performance: Friendly, Owner-minded, Communicative, United, Service-Oriented, Empathetic and Devoted & respectful.
HERE ARE EXCERPTS FROM HIS NOMINATION, SUBMITTED BY JOANNE WANTZ, MARKETING DEPARTMENT:“I don’t work with Elliott, nor have I ever been a patient of his, but I know for certain that he is extremely FOCUSED in his work. As the HighPoints coordinator, I view the weekly Press Ganey comments report to obtain compliments for inclusion in the newsletter’s Patient Experience page. I also receive copies of ‘thank you’
letters and email comments for HighPoints. I was sent a lengthy, but articulate and heartfelt letter of praise
for Elliott, written by one of his very appreciative patients. The writer said he ‘often thought of completing one of the FOCUSED cards, but thought that could not have allowed him to express all of Elliott’s wonderful attributes.’”
“From reading nearly 20 Press Ganey compliments about Elliott…even better than
publishing excerpts from this recent thank you letter, it was time for Elliott to be nominated for
the FOCUSED award… he is most deserving of the recognition!”
Press Ganey Survey ComplimentsHANOVER MEDICAL GROUP UROLOGY “I really like Dr. [Michael] Kane because he is thorough in his explanation, but cuts to the chase. I tend to be conservative and he supports that. I have tremendous confidence in him.”
LABORATORY “Kim [Bankert] was great! Serenda [Ott] did a great job! Her friendly personality and calm demeanor put my anxiety to rest. She explained that she would use a butterfly needle since she couldn’t easily find a vein. It didn’t hurt at all and barely bruised!”
M4 “Dr. [Michael] Knolle should be in every hospital. His concern seemed completely genuine. 100% the best experience I’ve had with a hospital physician.”
MAMMOGRAPHY “Dipti [Merchant] is the greatest. Very efficient, and very helpful, always has a smile.”
MATERNITY “Alex [Touloumes] was a nurse who treated me like family. She went above and beyond to make sure I was cared for and comfortable.”
NEW OXFORD EXPRESS CARE “Sandra [Fernandez] was the name of the provider. She was kind and gentle. Very professional!”
“Amy [Klunk] at the front desk was friendly and professional. She was very efficient!”
SURGICENTER “I am a diehard long-term [other area hospital] employee. I was very impressed with the staff and their care and friendliness. Kudos.”

Infusion Clinic Staff Earn Both Outpatient TrophiesFor the first time in our short period of awarding trophies, one department has been awarded both the Champion and Most Improved outpatient trophies.
Compared to all other outpatient departments, the Infusion Clinic mean score was the highest, and their percentile rank demonstrated the most improvement. Congratulations to the Infusion Clinic staff and thank you for creating positive patient experiences!

EMPLOYEE WELLNESS PROGRAM UPDATEBeet Facts:
1. Beets may lower your blood pressure, boost your stamina, fight inflammation, provide anti-cancer properties, are rich in valuable nutrients and fiber, and provide detoxification support.
2. Beet greens (the top green leafy part of the beet) actually provide more iron than spinach and have a higher overall nutritional value than the beetroot itself.
3. Although beets have the highest sugar content of all vegetables, most people can safely consume beet roots a few times per week and can consume their leafy beet greens in unlimited quantities.

• You’ll get stronger, more sculpted muscles and gain flexibility. You may also have better posture and a better sense of well-being.
• You can add Pilates a few days a week, in addition to cardio, since Pilates isn’t aerobic.

Woke up late
Swerves to miss car
Mrs. J. Jones woke up for work late and forgot she had to drop her loved dog Ginney at her vet’s office before going to work. She grabs Ginney and heads out the door. While backing out of her driveway, she realizes that she forgot the dog crate. Knowing that her vet’s office is just a half mile away, she holds Ginney on her lap. At the stop sign on Hanover Road, Ginney begins to bark and jump all over the place blocking a clear view of the intersection. Mrs. J turns left in front of Ms. Sally Mistletoe’s car. With quick response, Mrs. Mistletoe swerves to miss the turning vehicle, running up on the curb and knocking down a mailbox and snow man.
The city office, after reviewing the statistics of the number of accidents that occur at that corner changed the intersection to a four way light.

Hanover Hospital was awarded a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) Grant in the amount of $2,000,000. The RACP grant will offset costs associated with our new cardiac catheterization suite. As of November 10, 2015, Hanover Hospital had performed 344 PCIs (percutaneous coronary intervention) since the program began in September 2014, demonstrating the need for this service.
We are grateful for the tireless efforts of Senator Richard Alloway, Representative Kate Klunk and the many individuals who advocated on behalf of the project. Thanks also for the support of the Borough of Hanover, for serving as Applicant and Grantee, and GMS Funding Solutions, our grant writing partner.
