What is Altair SAO?

Altair's Software Asset Optimization Solution provides comprehensive insights into customers concurrent/shared software

license usage with the ability to consolidate usage from multiple license management systems. The end goal is to let

System Architecture

The SAO system comprises the back-end data collectors that gather all license usage and denials data

which is sent to the central data-warehouse. All license usage reports and analytics are provided using

Altair's Business Analytics Platform. The schematic is shown in the following diagram. This architecture

supports near real time and long term reports and analytics.

The Altair SAO Web Portal

The Altair SAO web portal is accessed using a URL similar to IP_Address:8080/sao/

Main Dashboard

The following image shows the main landing page. This page hosts the dashboard containing the most critical information

of interest. The OTB SAO portal shows the following view-ports:

1. Total number of denials encountered by the system during the past 1 hour and the past 24 hours and comparison to

the corresponding average calculated YTD.

2. Top longest currently open sessions

3. Feature Saturation (indicative of % of available licenses for a feature) grouped by saturation levels (if the number of

software features in a level are 0, the bar is not displayed)

a. <50%

b. 50-60%

c. 60-70%

d. 70-80%

e. 80-90%

f. 90-100%

4. License server activity displayed in a map with all license server locations based on their geographical location. The

metrics displayed through a pop are aggregated YTD. A mouse-over provides some additional details about that

license server site:

c. Total number of licenses granted by the daemon

d. Total number of denials per daemon

The web portal is segmented into the following areas:

Upper Left Panel hosts the list of reports grouped by category.

Lower Left Panel hosts the filters controlled by the end-user

Right Panel hosts the actual reports. New reports are displayed in new Tabs in this area.

The Toolbar provides utilities such as PDF export and Excel output. It depends on the report context.

The main dashboard consists of multiple view-ports. Each view-port has a chart icon in its upper right corner. This

icon is clicked to access the full report corresponding to the view-port.

The report list, filter controls panel, and the Toolbar are available for any active Tab.

Reports

All Reports and Administration tools are placed in the left had top pane. The Reports are grouped as follows:

1. Alerts - This group of reports shows the most critical metrics that are monitored by the IT and License Usage

managers

2. Usage - This group of reports shows license usage, short and long term. Usage reports also show the roll-up and

breakdown by Region and Department organization used by a customer. Region and Department reports are

available only if the customer loads these external data and the User-Region-Department assignments into the

system.

3. Advanced - This group of reports provides additional insight into license usage such as daily usage profiles, usage

comparisons, rollup and breakdown of all software usage across regional and departmental hierarchies if this data is

available and loaded into the system). Reports to help with planning based on spare capacity are also included in this

group.

4. Admin - This group of reports and utilities pertain to getting slow moving and static information such as an inventory of

vendors (license files), feature details including available licenses, and utilities for administrators to define and edit

Filters (aka Navigator)

The lower left panel hosts the Filter controls. Users can control date ranges, Vendor/Feature, Region, Department, User,

and License Server through drop down lists or date picker. The report in the active tab on the right hand side determines

which filters can be set for that report.

General Usage Directions

All reports are provided either through the Reports panel by clicking on a specific report, or in case of the Main

Dashboard, through clicking on the chart icon in each view-port's upper right corner.

The reports provide additional drill-down and drill through navigation. Drill-down refers to accessing reports using a

category hierarchy such as a region or a department. Drill through implies getting a related report using the selection of

an entity selected using the left mouse click.

When a drill through report is desired, the user hovers on a chart entity like a bar, point, pie, or on a table row. The user

can click, and in case a drill through report is available, a pop-up menu provides available report options. If the user

selects a report from the pop-up menu, a new tab is opened, and the related report is displayed. The new report will

control the list of available filters. The 'entity' selected in the previous report is the default selection for the new report.

The 'entity' could be a Vendor, Feature, User, License Server and so on.

In general, all high level reports are aggregations that go across various categories such as Regions, Departments,

Features, Vendors, License Servers and so on. In such cases, there are no filters available. Typically other drill throughs

on the chart provide access to reports that show a breakdown based on the entity selected. For example, if there is a

Vendor ranking chart, a drill through on a bar representing 1 vendor will provide usage breakdown by features contained

in that vendor.

When a set of filters is in effect, and a new report is accessed, the same set of filters is used as default. If the report is

already displayed in a tab, and is using its filter values, those values are not changed. Closing the tab and re-opening the

report will reset the filter values to the last active filter set. This eases accessing related reports in the absence of direct

drill through by using the currently set filter values.

When a chart is accompanied by a tabular report, the table rows can be reordered by selecting a column to sort, and the

sort order is reflected in the chart. Table rows are highlighted based on the mouse-over in the chart.

The next section describes all available reports, their filters, access method, and Drills that are available.


Main Dashboard ► Denials


Description

Show total number of denials during the past hour and the past 24 hours. Compare the same to the average number of denials for the hour (there are 24 averages, one per hour, over a 24 hour period). Compare the same to the average number of denials per day. The chart provides a visual indicator of the level of denials as compared to the averages. Excessive denials will put the needle in the red zone, whereas low denials will put the needle in the blue zone.

This shows the top excessive session lengths of the features that are currently in use based on the criteria for excessive continuous usage by a user.

Description

This shows the saturation levels collected in multiple ranges. Of main interest are the features that show up in 90-100% saturation. Saturation is an indicator of impending denials. If a feature is running at 100% saturation, the next request for this feature will be denied.

Description

This dashboard report displays a live map (internet connectivity required) with the physical locations of all license servers installed within the corporation. The tool tip shows the list of license servers running in a location and the distinct number of users using the server to get licenses. Licensing activity includes all granted licenses + all denials across every feature irrespective of the vendors.

Compare the same to the average number of denials for the hour (there are 24 averages, one per hour, over a 24 hour period). Compare the same to the average number of denials per day.

Saturation is an indicator of what % of licenses are in use. 100% saturation indicates features that would be denied if requested by a user. The report shows the relative license server share of activities that include the total license grants and denials across all vendor daemons installed on that server. Additional information includes the number of distinct users who use the server to obtain their licenses. The intent of this report is to provide information regarding the potential disruption a downed server might cause.

Description

This report shows the usage of multiple feature licenses simultaneously. The bar chart starts at the license count of 1, and ends at the total simultaneous license count that had actual usage. Users can check the total number of available licenses, and inspect if the maximum simultaneous usage license count is equal to or less than the total available licenses. If the maximum simultaneous license count is less than the available licenses, a closer inspection is warranted as there might be more licenses available than needed. If the maximum license count for simultaneous usage is equal to the available licenses, reducing license levels might result in increased denials. User can use different filters such as date range, and Vendor/Feature to inspect usage efficiency of other features.

Description

This report is provides insights into the Altair HyperWorks Licensing model. Altair has a unique licensing approach that allows users on one computer using one display to use multiple Altair HyperWorks products simultaneously and are only charged HyperWorks Units (HWUs) drawn by the feature that draws the maximum HWUs. For example, if a user has 3 sessions of HyperMesh open simultaneously, the total HWUs charged for that user on that machine will be 21, and not 21*3. This report shows the actual usage in HWU-Hours (total height of the bar) and the charged usage (in Yellow). The green portion of the usage depicts the delta usage advantage due to Altair's unique business model.

Peak

Peak (or Max Usage) refers to the maximum number of licenses that were in-use concurrently. This is always per

feature At the daily level, peak is the maximum license used in the day. Because data is captured every 5 minutes, this is

the peak usage encountered in any given 5 minute slot At the vendor level, peak is simply the MAX of all peaks encountered by all features belonging to the vendor At the 5 minute level, peak usage is simply referred to as usage and they are the same Peak consists of usage coming from runs of license type “Normal”, “Borrowed” and “Borrowed from Reserved”

Peak Borrowed

This is the same as Peak definition, except considering only Borrowed licenses

Min

Min (or Minimum) refers to the minimum number of licenses that were in-use concurrently. This is always per

feature At the daily level, min is the minimum license used in the day. Because data is captured every 5 minutes, this is the

minimum usage encountered in any given 5 minute slot. Min usage could be 0 if at least 1 slot in the 5 minute internal there is no usage

At the vendor level, min is simply the MIN of all mins encountered by all features belonging to the vendor Min consists of usage coming from runs of license type “Normal”, “Borrowed” and “Borrowed from Reserved”


Average

In the context of license usage (along with peak and min), average usage refers to the average number of licenses

in use for a given day. This is always per feature At the daily level, average is computed by taking the license usage every 5 minutes divided by 288. 288 is how

many 5 minute slots there are in a day (24 hours). The formula is simply 24 * 60 / 5

Available

Each software feature has a certain number of tokens available for use at any given time. This is also the total

license count. Available is same as the maximum number of available licenses as provided in the license file. Available does not refer to how many more licenses are available (or remaining)

Num of Tokens

In the usage efficiency chart, number of tokens refer to the simultaneous tokens that were in used for the selected

time period

Frequency

In the usage efficiency chart, frequency refers to how many slots the (given) number of tokens were in used at the

same time for the selected time period

Cumulative Asc Pct

Cumulative Ascending Percent is the integral (sum of frequency bars) of frequency normalized to 100%. Ex: Cumulative Asc Pct of 40 and Num of Tokens is 3 – it means, for the selected time period (for a given feature),

40% of the time, a maximum of 3 tokens was used Cumulative Desc Pct

Cumulative Descending Percent is 100 – Cumulative Asc Pct Ex: Cumulative Desc Pct of 60 and Num of Tokens is 3 – it means, for the selected time period (for a given

feature), 60% of the time, at minimum or at least 3 tokens were used


Saturation Pct

Saturation Percent is a measure to quantify what percent of total available licenses for a software feature are in use For example, if a feature has 10 tokens and 8 has been checked out, then saturation percent is 80% At the vendor level, the max saturation is simply the MAX saturation of all features belonging to the vendor

Last 1 HR Denials

The number of denials encountered in the last hour from now Average denials value reported along with this metric is the corresponding average denials for the hour (ex: if it is

4:30pm now, the average last 1 HR Denials is the average denial historically observed between 4pm to 5pm) Average denial value for the hour is calculated by summing all denials for that hour divided by the number of days

having denials for that hour Last 24 HR Denials

The number of denials encountered in the last 24 hours from now The average denials is computed by summing all denials divided by number of days having denials

Average Users

Average Users metric is available under “Usage Profile By Hour – Planning” report For the selected time period and given hour, the “average users” is the number of users found divided by number

of days. Number of users is limited to users found in the give hour. Number of days is the elapsed days from the first to last date usage was found for that hour in the selected time period

Average Used Licenses

Average Used Licenses metric is available under “Usage Profile By Hour – Planning” report For the selected time period and given hour, the “average used licenses” is the number of tokens used for that hour

(token*hours) divided by number of days. Number of days is the elapsed days from the first to last date usage was found for that hour in the selected time period

Average Denials

Average Denials metric is available under “Usage Profile By Hour – Planning” report For the selected time period and given hour, the “average denials” is the number of denials used for that hour

divided by number of days. Number of days is the elapsed days from the first to last date usage was found for that hour in the selected time period

Average Token Hours

Average Token Hours metric is available under Usage Profile By Hour The definition is the same as “Average Used Licenses”

Normal

Most runs are of “Normal” type (typical license check-out/check-in)

Denial

When a license manager denies a user from running a certain software feature, it is recorded as Denial. Not all

vendors supported by SAO at this time provide Denial info. It is also dependent on where and how the SAO agents are installed

Queued

Queued run (as supported by license manager for certain software)

Borrowed

Borrowed license type (as supported by license manager for certain software)


Reserved

Reserved license type (as supported by license manager for certain software) Reserved tokens as reported by SAO refers to reserved token still available which is the opposite from the other

license type such as normal or borrowed where in those cases, it is referring to normal or borrowed tokens used

Borr from Reser

Borrowed from Reserved license (currently not supported)

Token Hour(s)

For each run (user check-out/check-in a feature) that occurs, it requires some number of tokens/unit (N). Token

Hour is simply taking (for each run) N * number of hours This measure is important measure that straight Session Length because certain features within the same vendor

or otherwise requires different number of tokens (depending on hardware/cpu/processor/etc) In most cases, when the software checks out 1 token only, Usage Hours (see Session Length) and Token Hours

are the same. In case of Hypermesh for instance, running HyperMesh for one hour is equivalent to 21000 Token Hours in version 12 (LMX), or 2100 Token Hours in version 11 (flexlm)

Type-Location

Type-Location could refer to the installed location of the vendor OR “POOL”. In case of the latter, it means “Vendor

Pool”

Original TZ

Original time-zone of the run prior to conversion to a “global” time-zone if so defined

Session Length

Session length is in Hours. It is the amount of time a software feature is/was in use. This is the total time between a

check-out and check-in of a license for that feature


In the case where a time period (start/end date) is selected, Session Length is also referring to the amount of time the software was in used (Usage Hours)

Used and Unused Features

There are a number of features supplied by a software vendor to a company. Some features get used some do not There is no time frame limitation. It takes into account all features since the deployment of SAO

Vendor

A license manager instance that provides licenses based on a license file which contains the total number of

licenses available for each feature

Feature

A software feature. There are multiple software features typically included in one license file from a software

vendor Region

Denoting a regional hierarchy in use at a company

Department

Denoting a departmental hierarchy in use at a company

Start Date

Beginning date for any report (navigator) Start date for a run (check-out)


End Date

End date for any report (navigator) End date for a run (check-in)

Tokens
