Altered Images supplied and installed an Avid Interplay asset management system, over 20 Interplay Assist stations, Avid ISIS 7000 storage solution, Telestream Agility system and both new and upgraded Avid Media Composer and Symphony edit suites.

The new workflow features Geevs direct capture of Chelsea ‘s content to the EditShare XStream shared storage system fully integrated with Ark. The EditShare Flow live-logging templates and comprehensive metadata tracking make managing content, whether it is a live game or player interview, much more manageable.

Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA)

Altered Images supply a complete technical solution for a New Midlands Academy.Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA) is being hailed as the Midlands version of the “Brits School”, specialising in Digital Media. Altered Images were brought on board as specialist consultants to advise & supply Broadcast TV & Sound Production facilities.

The Independent state supported school for 14 to 18 year-olds offers alongside courses in creative and performing arts, instruction in rapidly developing digital arts. Using modern digital technology students are being schooled in all aspects of TV, film and radio production.

The Installation consisted of a 3 camera HD TV Studio complete with a studio lighting grid, JVC Studio Cameras, Ross Vision Mixing & Graphics , Autocue 4 channel playout server & prompting products, two radio studios based on a Sonifex solution, Custom Console furniture and Post Production workflows using Editshare, Avid & Apple.

The Studio gallery provides different operator positions, enabling students to experience every aspect of live production, with talkback communication to the adjacent TV Studio.

There are 20 Avid Editing systems in a Classroom environment plus 3 x Individual Avid Editing Systems for Craft Editing. All of which are on either 27” iMacs or Apple Mac Pro Workstations connected to an Editshare Media server for Centralised Media Storage.

Altered Images worked alongside other specialist contractors including RTS who supplied Audio equipment for the Radio and main Audio Studios. The audio post production facility is integrated in to the post production workflow. This allows an end-to-end video and audio file-based solution.

A central technical area (CTA) and fibre connection points around the building allow for camera connectivity to the HD TV studio via the CTA further developing student creativity by recreating an outside broadcast environment as well as enabling special events to be aired live to students throughout the Academy.

Altered Images were also asked to supply a Digital Signage Solution, so they could use video & graphics to promote events that were happening around the Academy.

18 x 42” Screens were installed around the Academy each with the ability to display different message if needed via an inbuilt media player.

New messages can be transferred to the internal storage of the Media Player in each screen, via 1Gige Ethernet Network & scheduled to play as required.

Altered Images, completed an installation at Hammersmith based IBC TV’s Alsharqiya TV Channel. The systems selected and installed by Altered Images have been provided by key manufacturers to deliver a fully-equipped SD/HD TV studio, with SD/ HD mixer, Graphics and Playout facilities

Alsharqiya is Iraq's first privately owned satellite channel providing a mixture of popular current affairs, satire and Iraq's first reality TV programs. Since 2004 the channel has gained a reputation for its humanitarian assistance and charity work which has been aimed at cities all over Iraq.

Altered Images was appointed as a specialist consultant to advise and supply broadcast television and studio production facilities for their new Alsharqiya Today Studio, as well as support their existing Production and Avid News installation in London and Dubai.

Chris Whittock – Altered Images Project Manager for the new studio build, comments, “Although the system is quite simple there were a few unique challenges with the installation. The studio is on the top floor of the building and there was very limited operating space, so we had to come up with a very clever design to make best use of the space.

“There was no computer flooring so all the cabling had to be run in custom made trunking, also we had to work around the builders who were making changes almost daily and complete the new installation in a very tight timescale”

From operations in Afghanistan to climbing Kilimanjaro: The British Army News Team relies on Panasonic Broadcast equipment to film effortlesslyBased in the British Army HQ in Hampshire, the British Army News Team, headed by senior cameraman Kevin Capon MBE, has the prime role to gather and provide broadcast quality material to International, National and Regional News stations.

The team’s core activity is to support operations such as Afghanistan and Iraq, where it provides material that for security reasons, operational necessity or general sensitivity would not normally be available to the public media. When deployed on operations it covers anything from underwater shoot to following wounded soldiers climbing Mt Kilimanjaro.

They also supply some of the materials that they have produced to a number of sources such as the national network, regional televisions and all hosts of social networks – the Army webpage, Defence intranet and Army Facebook and Twitter. BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting Services) is the Army ‘s own television station which is also served by the Army News Team in order to inform and entertain the military forces. The material also forms the basis of the National archive held at the Imperial War Museum.

With years of experience in working at various missions, the need for delivering quicker and more efficient workflow was growing and a tapeless workflow was required. Operations, due to the hostile environment, provide real challenges for both people and equipment and on many occasions power is unavailable, therefore the entire workflow is based around working on battery power throughout the whole process, from acquisition through post production to transmission. Panasonic supplied the film crew with robust cameras with long battery life, giving them the opportunity to shoot for hours without using a power supply.

Extensive testing was carried out prior to choosing the right manufacturer and format to achieve this, but since adopting Panasonic P2 as its chosen format it has not looked back.

Few key driving factors established that Panasonic’s equipment was the most reliable one to suit the needs of the Army News Team. Size and weight is a critical factor when working and filming in hostile environments. “Often we may get one seat on a helicopter (or the back of an armoured personnel carrier) and this will govern what can be carried and how we work. The seamless P2 workflow allows us to carry the minimum amount of equipment, a camera, a laptop and a small satellite system,” says Kevin Capon.

“In that I can shoot, take my card out of the camera, place it into my laptop and edit with no need to ingest - simply put the material directly onto the timeline, edit and transmit, without carrying any additional peripherals. The beauty of the Panasonic equipment is the simplicity of the work with P2,” concludes Kevin.

To achieve continues success despite the challenge their harsh working environment presents, the crew normally carries two P2 cameras to capture all the extreme moments.
