Four new trainees joined the Altona Refinery process team in July. The operator trainees come with a wealth of experience from diverse backgrounds, including the LNG, waste management and recruiting industries.

“This one initiative has resulted in … the emissions reduction equivalent of taking 1,500 cars off the roads.”

Continuing to provide the energy and resources we need every day, while searching for ways to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions is an enormous, relentless challenge.

It is a challenge that requires thousands of solutions developed continuously by teams of highly trained, highly educated technical minds.

One excellent example of this was the refinery’s Boiler Turndown/FCC Steam Optimisation team that was honoured at the recent Mobil Fuelling Victoria Awards.

“By crawling over a myriad of old technical details and running multiple plant tests this team was able to identify an opportunity to run the refinery’s boilers at a much lower rate,” explained Energy and Application Engineering Team Leader Mark Ripper.

“This significantly improved energy efficiency and created an opportunity to direct more waste heat into a boiler in the Fluid Catalytic Cracker (FCC) to generate more steam energy.

“This one initiative has resulted in an emissions reduction, that is the equivalent of taking 1,500 cars off the road.”

Altona Refinery Manager Andrew Warrell said that continuously improving the refinery’s operations was essential to maintaining its competitiveness and long-term viability.

“The bar is constantly being raised in terms of improving our efficiency, our reliability and our operations integrity, while reducing our environmental footprint,” he said.

“Achieving these challenges requires a constant flow of innovative ideas and diverse teams of exceptional technical minds in order to see the ideas through to execution.

“This is why we consider it so important to inspire more of our children to study maths and science through initiatives like our Bright Futures Program, the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy and the refinery’s Schools Ambassador Program.”

Fresh ideas help solve the tough challenges

Mobil is helping to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists by investing over $95,000 into local schools and kindergartens.

Through the 2016 Bright Future Grants program, 33 schools and kindergartens near the refinery and the Mobil Yarraville Terminal have each received grants for maths and science resources and projects.

“Scientists and engineers are critical for addressing the challenges of 21st century life. That’s why we invest in education programs that focus on inspiring kids to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” said Refinery Manager Andrew Warrell.

“From medicine to energy development to computing and engineering, we are supporting the development of a passionate and highly skilled workforce that will help solve problems and create new opportunities into the future.”

The grants will enable local kindergartens, primary and secondary schools to bolster their maths and science programs and resources; from purchasing new technology such as iPads, smartboard software and robotics kits, to funding outdoor programs to

Mobil has a long history of supporting local schools and kindergartens. Since the Bright Future Grants program began in 2009, Mobil has provided over $580,000 to local schools and kindergartens to support maths and science education.

In July the refinery team celebrated the significant milestone of seven years without a lost-time injury.

Our increased focus on safety, strong commitment from employees, new training programs as well as other initiatives have helped us to build a culture where everyone is committed to keeping themselves, and their workmates, safe.

A number of years ago we set our safety goal – Nobody Gets Hurt. This is the equivalent of our Olympians setting their goals on winning gold. Every Olympian in Rio had to believe they could win gold, and those that didn’t, redouble their efforts and set their sights on Tokyo in 2020.

Our objective is the same. We believe in our ability to eliminate injuries from our workplace and we work hard at achieving it. If someone is hurt, we learn from the incident and redouble our efforts to reach our goal.

We should all be proud of the fact that our relentless pursuit of this goal has Altona classed as one of the safest ExxonMobil refineries around the world.

While we are a relatively small refinery and we are competing against new mega-refineries across the region, we have gained a reputation as a world leader in safety, efficiency and reliability.

A number of our operations and technical people have been assisting and learning on assignments at refineries and plants across Asia, Europe and North America. As a result I have received excellent feedback highlighting the professionalism, dedication and high level of involvement displayed by our people. Their performances have further enhanced our standing in the ExxonMobil refining world.

Our reputation for focusing on achieving “gold” in safety, along with increasing productivity and improving reliability, further secures the Altona Refinery’s position as a major supplier of fuel to Victoria.

The refinery was pleased to support Williamtown Community and Education Centre by providing a significant financial contribution to help fund the creation of Joan’s Garden.

Officially opened on June 1, the first anniversary of Joan Kirner’s death, the garden pays homage to the local politician, famous for being Victoria’s first and only female Premier, and well-loved by the people in her home-town of Williamstown.

Joan’s Garden has been created as a vibrant space that can be used by people accessing the Williamstown Community Centre, including participants in its childcare and adult education programs.

Altona Refinery has a long-standing relationship with Williamstown Community Centre, which has continued to grow over nearly 20 years.

Importantly, members of the centre’s management committee are directly engaged with the refinery by regularly attending our quarterly community meetings.

“We believe in our ability to eliminate injuries from our workplace and we work hard at achieving it.”

Altona Refinery has achieved seven years without a lost time injury.

Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AM, Governor of Victoria, opened Joan’s Garden on June 1.
