Why do you need a resume? Often the first formal communication with

prospective employers You are using this as an invitation to an

interview A sales brochure advertising the best reasons

to consider you for a position Having a solid and effective resume can

greatly improve your chances of landing thatdream job.

Many job seekers ask this question Isnt acompanys job application good enough? No!When you submit a resume, you are in controlof the information; you decide just what andhow much information to highlight.

The primary function of a resume is tohighlight your particular skills and abilities forthe benefit of the prospective employerwithout forcing him/ her to muddle through a

job-by-job description of the pertinentinformation.

Resumes Common Elements Personal Data: Updated contact information with clear and professional

email address & voicemail

Objective: Clear and relevant objective

Employment History (or Experience) Key Contributions & your specific achievements

Clear and concise description of the positions

Does not have to be career-specific employment

Publications/thesis, projects, related experience, tutoring, etc.

Coursework is useful if limited career experience. Highlight relevant &specialized courses only

Education Highlight a good GPA

if GPA is not perfect, be prepared to explain

Volunteer/Community Involvement Awards/Honors: Patents, honors, top placement in career-related

competitions, etc.

Professional Memberships: Include leadership positions, yourcontributions, etc.

Professional Development: Computer courses, certifications, seminars

Skills/Attributes Platforms, OSs, protocols, tools, SW packages,multi-lingual, experience abroad, etc.

Resume Writing Tips 1. Know the purpose of your resume

Make sure you use the right keywords Most employers useautomated scan & search systems

3. Use effective titles4. Proofread it multiple times & properly use spell-check & grammar-

check

5. Use bullet points & avoid fancy graphics, underlining, shading, etc.

6. Use a font size of 10 to 14 points Arial or Times New Roman

7. Use one font and stick to it8. Use white or off-white paper

9. Use 8.5x11 paper

10. Print on one side of the paper

11. Put most important information at the top12. Avoid negativity

13. Include achievements and responsibilities (i.e. Achievement can bea problem statement & you describe how you solved the problem)

14. One customized resume for each employment opportunity

15. Properly track resume submissions per employment opportunity

16. Understand the position and job requirements should influenceyour resume content

Once the Resume is Complete 1. Build your professional network as a more effective way of

submitting a resume2. Note common questions & comments towards your resume -

may be indicative of updates that need to be made.

3. Use social media properly (i.e. LinkedIn should be areflection of your resume with the appropriate key words)

4. Apply on-line!!

5. Follow-up with potential employers after resume submission(i.e. email, phone call, thank you letter, or cover letter wherewarranted)

6. Follow resume submission/career fair requirements in detail

7. Review interview and presentation skills & techniques:

i. Know what is on your resume & where it is foundii. Dress appropriately

iii. Know about the company

iv. Cleanliness (bad breath, sweaty palms, BO, etc.)

v. Do not use a cell phone for phone interviews

vi. Do not talk bad about a job, boss, etc.

Practice interviewing to refine your skillviii. Prepare for questions (tell me about yourself, what is

your biggest weakness, etc.)
