This year’s awardees are Justice Jenny Lind Aldecoa-Delorino of the Sillimanians in Metro Manila (SIMM) alumni chapter in the field of public service in the judiciary and Pamela Yang-Windle of the Silliman University General Alumni Registrar (SUGAR) and the Silliman University Alumni of South Florida Chapter in the field of nursing. Aldecoa-Delorino earned her bachelor of arts major in political science with magna cum laude honors from Silliman University in 1981. She proceeded to law in Silliman University and graduated with a bachelor of laws degree, cum laude, in 1985. She was admitted to the to page 8 Hon. Jenny Lind R. Aldecoa-Delorino Ms. Pamela Yang-Windel Philippine Bar in April 1989. In 2013 she was promoted to the position of Deputy Court Administrator, a position with the equivalent rank of an associate justice of the Court of Appeals, a fitting testament to her competent, dedicated, and virtuous judicial service. More than her achievements, she has not forgotten to share hert superior singing talent with the community and the church. A natural coloratura soprano, she continues to sing for the church, community, her alma mater, and for the judiciary, earning for her a national reputation as “the singing judge.” Dean of the SU College of Law, Atty. M. Mikhail Lee L. Maxino, who has known Justice Delorino for 35 years, shared: “In all those years, I have never seen or heard Justice Jenny waver in her Christian values, convictions, and principles. She is strong-willed when it comes to upholding her principles, but gentle and humane in matters that deserve compassion.” On the other hand, Yang- Windle graduated bachelor of science in nursing from Silliman University in 1973 and earned a master of science in nursing administration from Texas Women’s University in Houston, Texas, USA. Her contribution to nursing research and practice is well- acknowledged in multi-professional and multidisciplinary settings. Majority of her research works are published in peer-reviewed journals where only high-level research works are accepted. Her scholarship contributed more than 60 publications or articles and 10 book chapters, monographs, or commentaries. She has presented her scholarly works in more than 100 local, national, and international conferences. 2014 Outstanding Sillimanians Awarded

Two Sillimanians who have distinguished themselves in their fields were conferred the Outstanding Sillimanian Awards in a fitting and meaningful ceremony on August 28 at 9:30 a.m. at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium, Silliman University. This year’s awardees are Justice Jenny Lind Aldecoa-Delorino of the Sillimanians in Metro Manila (SIMM) alumni chapter in the field of public service in the judiciary and Pamela Yang-Windle of the Silliman University General Alumni Registrar (SUGAR) and the Silliman University Alumni of South Florida Chapter in the field of nursing. Aldecoa-Delorino earned her bachelor of arts major in political science with magna cum laude honors from Silliman University in 1981. ALUMNI CHAPTER NEWSNew York-New Jersey Chapter

The chapter had their Annual Picnic with games, prizes and line-dancing on August 9, 2014 starting at 10 A.M. at Wild Duck Pond Pavilion Area at 1134 E. Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The President of the Chapter is Ms. Felella Kiamco-Millman. The Chapter also hosted a meet and greet breakfast fellowship for SU VPAA Betsy Joy B. Tan and VP for Development Jane Annette L. Belarmino during their visit last April 2014.

Silliman Association in New England (SANE)

SANE chapter initiated a program for Silliman University’s top officials visit to the different 20 Universities, colleges and organizations across the United States. Silliman’s decision for both Dr. Tan and Professor Belarmino to travel to the United States is part of its preparations for ASEAN 2015 integration. The goal of the said trip was to develop inter-institutional programs for faculty and student exchanges between Silliman University and American Schools. This initiative was developed by the Silliman Association of New England (SANE), headed by its president Prof. Priscilla Lasmarias-Kelso, an Outstanding Sillimanian, and vice president, Dr. Richard Elphick. The same alumni chapter facilitated their appointments in the US and oversaw the hosting arrangements for both vice presidents. Both Professor Kelso and Dr. Elphick are distinguished professors in two different US universities. Professor Kelso used to work on international education at Northeastern University in

Boston, while Dr. Elphick is a professor of history at Wesleyan in Connecticut.

Silliman University Alumni Association of Southern

California

The SUAA of Southern CA sponsored a Silliman University Alumni 5K Run/Walk USA on July 12, 2014. The Run started at 8:30 a.m. at the picnic area No. 7, Whittier Narrows Regional Park at Santa Anita Avenue, South El Monte, California. Proceeds of the said event is for the Silliman University’s Continuing Response Program that provides financial assistance to Silliman University students affected by man-made and natural disaster. This covers full or partial discounts for tuition, university fees and board and lodging. The 5K

The National Capital Region (Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia) hosted to welcome the Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Betsy Joy Tan and Vice President for Development Prof. Jane Annette L. Belarmino and to elect their officers for the new term at the home of Delia Lim-Levy. The new chapter president elected was Mr. Danilo Luzada.

The SUAA Melbourne, Australia is scheduled to meet on August 23,2014 for a dinner dance –

cum fund raising campaign at True Blue Bistro and Buffet, 398 Melrose Drive,Tullamarine, Vic 3043. The chapter is now in the process of creating a website and newsletter to reach out to as many Sillimanians in Melbourne. According to its chapter president Ms. Cecilia Paladar-Dizon, SUAAMCI plan to have a project for Silliman University something that is tangible and non-perishable.

The Silliman University Alumni Association New Zealand Chapter is the newest alumni chapter to be recognized by the Silliman Alumni Association, Inc. (SAAI) during its regular meeting on March 21, 2014. Phil Balbuena is its first chapter president.

One of the highlights of the said affair was the ceremony of Sacred Trust and the donning of the OSA medallions to the Outstanding Sillimanian Awardees and the election of officers.The newly elected chapter president is Mr. Ed Dames. The Chapter also sponsors with the Cultural Affairs Committee the display of the Art collection of Dr. Romeo P. President Aquino Confers National Scientist Rank on Dr. Alcala

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III conferred the rank of National Scientist on Dr. Angel C. AgustAugust 12 at the Rizal Hall of the Malacañang Palace.

The Order of National Scientist is the highest honor given by the President of the Republic of the Philippines to a person of science in the Philippines who has made significant contributions in one of the different fields of science and technology.

Dr. Alcala received the Presidential Medallion in recognition of his “seminal and original research on the systematic, ecology, and diversity of Philippine amphibians and reptiles, and, marine biodiversity, reef fishes and conservation (marine protected areas).”

Among those present during the conferment ceremony were members of his family and some officials and Members of the Board of Trustees of Silliman University.

Dr. Alcala is among the country’s foremost experts in marine ecosystem conservation, pioneering the concept of community-based coastal resource management and the use of artificial reefs as models for fisheries development in the Philippines. He has written over 200 books and publications, and often serves as reference for topics on community ecology, biogeography and systematics of Philippine amphibians and reptiles. His extensive research work has received numerous awards and distinctions in the country and abroad, including the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1992 and the Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation.

Dr. Alcala has served as Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and later, as Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education. He is also often engaged by international development organizations as a consultant.

An Outstanding Sillimanian, Dr. Alcala obtained his degree of Bachelor of Science in Biology, magna cum laude, from Silliman University in 1951. He completed his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences at Stanford University in California in 1960 and 1966, respectively.

Dr. Alcala is the second National Scientist from Silliman. The first was the late Dr. Clara Y. Lim-Sylianco who obtained three degrees from Silliman: Associate in Arts major in Chemistry in 1947, with highest honors; Bachelor of Science in 1948, magna cum laude; and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1949, magna cum laude.

In the field of culture and arts, Silliman has produced two National Artists: Dr. Edith L. Tiempo in Literature and Mr. Eddie S. Romero in Cinema and Broadcast Arts. (Source: www.su.edu,ph )

Dr. Agustin A. Pulido is New Trustee Representing Alumni in Western Visayas

Dr. Agustin Aguilar Pulido assumed as Alumni Trustee designate for Western Visayas on June 1, 2014 for a term of five (5) years He replaced Atty. Reinaldo Nolido after finishing his term on May 31, 2014. There are five (5) Alumni Representatives to the Board of Trustees. They represent Luzon, Eastern Visayas, Western Visayas, Mindanao and Overseas.

SUCNAAI is the First Alumni Group Recognized by SAAI The Silliman University College of Nursing Alumni Association International is the first Alumni Group recognized by the Silliman Alumni Association, Inc. Their application for recognition was approved during the Board of Directors regular meeting on August 25, 2013. SAAI is now accepting applications for recognition Alumni Groups other than the Alumni Chapters. Guidelines for the said recognition is available at the SAAI office or at the SAAI website www.saai2013.com.

SUCNAAI has annually sponsored the Balik-talent lecture series for Nurses held during Tipon Silliman of the SUACONA . This year’s lecture series was held at the Clair Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium whole day of August 22, 2014. Guest of Honor was Sen. Sonny Angara. The over-all coordinator of the event is SUCNAAI President Ms. Dinah Peñaflorida.
