On this year’s Founders Day, we give a well-deserved recognition to Silliman University for celebrating its 115th year, the Silliman Church for its 100 glorious years, and the Silliman University High School also for its 100 remarkable years! As we celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of not only these institutions, but also of the men and women who exemplify the rich and noble traditions and values of these institutions, we also take this occasion to gaze at the past and assess the future. Looking back, we can see that all of us went through a long and winding path leading to this moment. We accomplished much, but these accomplishments, however grand or dramatic, are not ours alone. Behind each accomplishment is an inspiring story about family and friends who supported, sustained, sacrificed, strengthened, and stood by us and with us. This is so true in the Silliman University community. We all help build ourselves and the University.

Thus, this is likewise a time to express our gratitude. Perhaps, nobody has expressed gratitude more fully and more fervently than St. Paul. Throughout his letters, Paul continually gives thanks to God for his

fellow workers. Not one of us can do all the work alone. We continually call on the kindness of others. At this time, we also think of those who prepared our meals at the University cafeteria or dormitories, who cleaned our living quarters, who washed our clothes, who looked for and lent us books and reading materials in the library, who paid for our tuition and school fees, who taught us what we now know, who reminded us that studies should not interfere in our education, and those who did a lot of other things for us, so many of them, we can hardly keep count and usually take them for granted.

We shouldn’t take them for granted. Following St. Paul’s example, we need to do three things. First, we humble ourselves. We realize that it wasn’t all our work. Dozens, hundreds, thousands, even generations of people worked to bring about a certain event or to build a university.

Second, we honor others. We acknowledge what they have done, and encourage them to continue working for what is good and desirable. We value them by valuing their work.

Third, we help each other to realize that God works through us. When we thank God for a person, we glorify God and at the same time, we help the person to remember that he or she is a steward of God’s gifts. Our alma mater, Silliman University, was built on a culture of gratitude. We honor ourselves and our University by helping to perpetuate this culture.

Warmest congratulations to our remarkable achievers and honorees, Silliman University, Silliman Church, Silliman University High School, and all who have helped build this wonderful University. To God be the Glory!

Davao Chapter

The Kalumon Theater Group of Davao will perform in Dumaguete as part of the 115th Founders Day of Silliman University.

This year is the 100th year of the Silliman High School. It is also the centennial of Siliman Church, which is the bastion of Protestantism in the country. It is also the 50th anniversary of the College of Mass Communication. Thus, we are expecting a huge number of alumni attending this year’s Founders Day celebration, probably similar to when Silliman marked its centennial in 2001 where there were three chartered flights that arrived from the US.

The Davao Alumni Chapter takes pride in bringing Kalumon on center stage for a two-day performance at the

Silliman University Alumni Association Metro Manila Chapter, Inc. (SUAAMMCI) holds its pre-Founders Day fellowship on August 13, 2016 at the Manila Polo Club, Forbes Park, Makati with guest of honor, Education Secretary Leonor M. Briones.

Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium on August 25 at 3 p.m. and on August 26 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Considering the significant contributions of Davao and Mindanao to the nation’s political scene, .Kalumon along with Mindanao- based alumni participate as well in the Parada Sillimaniana on August 27 and bring the sights and sounds of the Kadayawan Festival by performiñg the” indak- indak sa kadalanan.” .Kadayawan Festival has reached greater heights during the administration of the Dutertes in Davao, which showcases the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous people of the island.

Some years back, a group of alumni established the “Sadya Mindanaw” during a meeting in General Santos City. It was an avenue

that brought Mindanao- based

Sillimanians for a reunion. The next “Sadya” was hosted in Cagayan de Oro City followed by Davao City last year. From a simple get-together, it evolved into a three-day event that brought Sillimanians and their families to various tourism destinations. The event in Davao was attended by some 200 participants from all over the country to include some from Germany and the US, serving as an inspiration for the Greater Bacolod Chapter to host a similar event last summer known as “Hugyaw Visayas 2016.”. The next “Sadya” will be hosted by Butuan and Surigao.

Thus, by bringing Kalumon Theater Group to Silliman, we hope to

drumbeat interest for the next “Sadya Mindanaw” in May 2017.

It is also our own way of supporting rural tourism and, hopefully, sell Mindanao as a destination to the thousands of Silliman alumni who usually attend homecomings/reunions during Founders Day.

Incidentally, It might interest the Department of Tourism to know that we have active Silliman alumni chapters all over the world who keep in touch with each other via social media and being Taken care of by a vibrant Silliman Alumni Association, Inc. which has its own active board. SOCSKSARGEN Chapter

The Silliman Alumni Association, Inc. - SOCSKSARGEN Chapter carries on an annual tradition of the alma mater’s alumni all over the world : to commemorate each year’s Founders Day with a fellowship gathering in wherever geographic location there are alumni. To mark Silliman’s 115th Founders Day, the Chapter had the SAAI National Board President, Atty. Mikhail Lee Maxino gracing the events on August 14, 2016 -- both the celebration of Silliman Sunday at the Mt. Matutum Christian Church, as well as a fellowship luncheon at one of General Santos City’s farm

resorts. The gathering was a success, well-attended by alumni coming from as far as Isulan and Kiamba, South Cotabato. Atty. Maxino also shared updates from the University, as well as encouraged the Chapter to keep on shining as one of the leading alumni chapters of Silliman University. With the theme, “Celebrating 115 Years of a Fun and Healthy Silliman,” everyone was encouraged to come in the P.E. class attire of their batches. Gimmicks included reminiscing P.E. classes by doing the square dance and the Daily Dozen calisthenics. Above all, it was the fun of meeting and greeting old and new friends that shared the common bond that is the Silliman Spirit that made thet event a memorable one.

Her research achievements have been recognized in the scientific community through the various awards she has received, among them, Best Research, Best Paper, Presidential Award for Outstanding Publication, Outstanding Researcher, Achievement Award Research, and Outstanding Extension Program. She is married to another Sillimanian, Rene Calumpang, by whom she has two children, Carla Lenore and Virgil Henry, who likewise studied in Silliman.

Engle was nominated by the Silliman Alumni Association of Alaska through its president, Helen Valencia Silvia. Born in Siaton, Negros Oriental, she is the eldest of six children. She went to Mangnao Elementary School and finished salutatorian. In 1953, she entered Silliman University High School followed by five years of college where she earned a degree in bachelor of science in civil engineering. She enrolled in Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila for a degree in sanitary engineering and soon after passed the board exams for both civil and sanitary engineering. She then migrated to the United States and landed a job in the East Coast. When she moved to Alaska, she became the first female engineer registered in the state. Her vast experience led to many

important positions and attendant responsibilities for the entire Alaska state. She served as president for 10 years in the Alaska alumni chapter that hosted Tipon 2011 as well as served in various capacities in the Silliman University Alumni Council of North America (SUACONA). Engle has two sons, Kent and Rex, by her late husband and is blessed with two grandsons.

Furukawa was nominated by the Sillimanians in Metro Manila (SIMM) through its president Edilberto Dames Jr. His connection with Negros Oriental and Dumaguete stemmed from the influence of his father who was assigned by the Organization for Industrial, Spiritual, and Cultural Advancement (OISCA), a Japanese community livelihood outreach foundation, to the province. His father was conferred honorary citizenship in 1976 by Canlaon City after having introduced Japanese rice and sericulture. Furukawa graduated from Silliman University High School in 1976. In 1981, he received the degree of bachelor of science in civil engineering with University Honors. He practiced his profession in Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and India. In 1991, he initiated an International Labor Organization project with the Silliman University College of Engineering where students learn modern technologies in Japan through technical trainings by Japanese companies. When calamities struck his homeplace in Miyagi in 2011 and in 2012 and 2013 in Negros, Furukawa helped both areas in distributing mats

and providing construction materials, even helping rebuild some homes. This alumnus is married to Shigeko Furukawa by whom he has a daughter, Aiko and a son, Sachinori.

Gaid was nominated by the Cagayan de Oro Alumni Chapter through its president, Angeline Bacal Guarin. She graduated cumlaude for her pre-medical course in 1971, later proceeding to the University of the Philippines for medicine. As a pediatrician, Gaid has found her niche in her advocacy for special children and the early detection of cancer. As a result of these pursuits, she was given the Centennial Recognition Award by the UP College of Medicine in 2015, as well as the Outstanding Pediatrician in Community Pediatricsin 2014 from the Philippine Pediatric Society. Her advocacy has served its purpose well as she “walks the talk” through the health ministry in the United Church of Christ in the Philippines in Cagayan de Oro City, like her long-running weekly free clinic, medical missions in rural poor outreach communities, and among victims of calamities. Married to a fellow doctor, Rene Antonio Gaid, the couple is blessed with four daughters, all professionals.

She directed the Forward Medical Responders during calamities like the Super Typhoon Yolanda and the Zamboanga siege. In 2000, she was awarded the Bronze Cross Medal for heroism in the Payatas trash slide where she led her team in the search and rescue of victims. IIt is only now that I sit down and recall the distant past

Of memories of my younger years in the school where I wasIt is still very clear in my mind of those moments once

In the beach where I loaf around, swim or just lay idle in the sand

IIFeeling the cool breeze in the morning after our joggingSat on the cottage, took a little rest for I was still panting

Then after a while, I removed my shirt, kicked my shoes off, and waded through the water

Cold as it was but refreshing the thought of it all in my mind still linger

IIIDipped in the water for a few minutes for it’s already lateI still have to catch classes and run to the Silliman gate

The day in class was not at all that easyThat in the afternoon, I go back to the beach, relax and looks at

the sea

IVThe waves, one by one, cascading towards the shore

Unending, not a pause, never tired at allHow wonderful that nature, could be so fascinating

That our mind will never comprehend for it is beyond our think-ing

VThen again I kicked off my shoes and removed my socks

Walked along the shore to the North, to the makeshift docksDawdling lazily, turning my back and look at the waves erasing

my footstepsSomehow my memory of the beach will never be erased, it will

be for keeps

VIThen as the sun starts to set in the horizon

The busy day, in school also is ending soonAs the faint ray of the sun starts fading

I collect my things, goes home still a lot to do in the morning

VIIAs long as I have time I always go back to where I would like to

beIn the beach for I felt that it has become a part of me

All alone I lay on the sand, close my eyes and be at easeBut once in a while interrupted by the gush of the cold sea breeze

VIIIThen I sat up and looked towards the sea, once again

There’s no wave that day but ripples coming to the shores like refrain

At the distance they look like laces moved by the blowing windComing near the shore, slowly disappear in a while in the sand

they blend

IXAfter I studied, I stay late in the beach to feel the cold breeze

blowingThen I see fishermen sailing to the sea to start fishing

With their kerosene lamps slowly they oared towards the deepMoving on and on, I felt something I asked myself “are they

safe”

XAnd the lights at the distance soon became a flicker then

They’re gone, I hope they are coming home safe in the morningI went home with a little twinge in my heart really

Such people dared the ocean just to bring food to their family

XIThe years have past, then I finished my pre-med degree

To the Hall of Silliman I was nurtured and soon be readyTo pursue whatever endeavors that later I will pursue

But Silliman has made me what I am and I will forever be true

XIITo the ideals of Silliman wherever fate may leads me later

I will preserve and hold dear in my mind to do greaterThe knowledge I got from its rooms and its corridors

Will forever etched in my mind forevermore

XIIIBut before I left Silliman I visited the beach to bade goodbye

I was sad, I felt the mist in the corner of my eyeTears start falling then became like a flowing stream

Soon I’ll content myself of the memory of the sand and sea only in my dream

XIVThat was 35 years ago then I came back to Dumaguete

The first thing I did was to visit Silliman Campus then hurriedlyWent to the sea to reminisce the old memories of Silliman beachBut I was so disappointed, downhearted, sad, totally devastated

to say the least

NEWS BRIEFS

XVThe beach where I used to loaf around, lie on the sand wade

through its waterWhere I sit on the cottage, looking at the sea, its powdery sand,

it’s no longer thereLonely and dejected I couldn’t speak, a word even

Looked at it in disbelief my heart, mind my feeling frozen

XVIWhat was once a beautiful beach is now filled with fishing boatsGarbage litters around wanton destruction these people brought

To once pristine water of the beach I could pretty say wellBut gone, the memories of it all I could hardly tell

XVIII went home crushed, down trodden, with aching heart I tried to

erase the memory of the placeForgetting somehow, the hurt, that maybe the pain will easeYes, it helped for a while but the thought always haunts my

memoryIt’s only now after 5 years denying that I took the courage to

face the reality

XVIIIThe beach that I once knew where my heart and mind have

dweltIs forever gone, but just think of what really lies beneath

Is the same Silliman beach that have filled some emptinessIn my heart and have one way or the other have healed my

loneliness

XIXAnd looking back now is no longer painful or difficult

For even now, the beach, I don’t know what kind of sortBut just remember how it is was, will always have been

Eases the aches, comforts the mind and the soul even

XXThat memorable moments must never be forgotten

Especially if its one of the many beautiful things that molded my being

It will always come back in all my dreams everThat’s why I wrote this poem even after, 4 DECADES LATER.
