Welcome to the 27th Alumni Festival

Welcome to the 27th Alumni Festival; three days of discovery, intellectual adventure and reconnection. Each year, the Festival offers a chance to think about the world and to hear what some of Cambridge’s

leading academics are currently pondering, to be inspired by the transformational ideas created at the University and to rediscover this remarkable place.

This year the festival programme features events taking guests from medieval Cairo to beyond the solar system. Speakers share their insights on some of the major questions Cambridge academics, and society at large, are tackling: can the planet sustain a population of nine billion? Is social media undermining democracy? And which jobs should be automated, and at what cost?

Festival favourites such as Come and Sing, the Vice-Chancellor’s welcome reception and behind the scenes events in Departments and Colleges, are joined by new events such as live podcasts and interactive and family-friendly activities.

This guide includes a list of events and other useful information to help you get the most out of your weekend.

We hope you enjoy the 2017 Alumni Festival.

2017:  Vice-Chancellor transition

On 2 October, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz steps down as Vice-Chancellor of the University after seven years of remarkable service to Cambridge.

He hands the reins over to Professor Stephen Toope, who takes up the post of 346th Vice-Chancellor, joining from the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs. Professor Toope was formerly president and vice-chancellor of the University of British Columbia. We are delighted that this Alumni Festival offers the chance to bid farewell to the current Vice-Chancellor, at the Fitzwilliam Museum on Friday evening, and to hear from the Vice-Chancellor Elect over tea on Saturday afternoon, just days before his formal installation.

See pages 10 and 17 for further details.
