Dean‟s Message

Welcome Alumni,

I am pleased to introduce this special edition of alumni matters focusing on the

mission, vision and objectives of the School of Management and how we can work

more closely with you, our alumni, to achieve them.

In addition, as a reminder, we are approaching our 50th anniversary in 2013 and

we hope to be celebrating this milestone in a variety of ways. The last 50 years

have been highly successful and we must now ensure that we build on these solid

foundations to create an equally successful future for the School, by meeting the

ever changing requirements of a new age.

Also included in this issue is the latest alumni survey. Alongside articulating the

ways you can work with the School the Alumni Office are also keen to establish

greater, more up to date knowledge about the perceptions and needs of our global

alumni community. The 2012 alumni survey will give you the opportunity to let us

know what you think about what we are doing, what you think we should do in the

future and how you would like to get involved.

You will notice the importance given to the development of business engagement

and the alumni network in the School‟s mission, vision and objectives! There

should be a symbiotic relationship between yourselves, your organizations and the

School and we invite you to work with us in one or many of the areas we describe

below.

Best wishes

Dr. Sarah Dixon, Dean,

How can you help us to achieve our objectives? As alumni of the school you are all a great reflection of the quality of the

programmes we offer at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. We are

constantly reviewing our offer and introducing new programmes to the portfolio. It‟s

very easy to keep up to date with our programmes offer online. We would be

delighted if you were able to advise your networks about our portfolio and in

particular our new programmes for 2012/13.

Postgraduate Programmes (New for 2012/13) The Bradford MSc - the school is building on the success of our specialist MSc

programmes such as HRM and Finance by introducing new programmes for

2012/13 (see across). These programmes have been designed to meet the needs

of students requiring a more focussed and in depth approach to a subject and more

obvious career path.

EMBA (Executive Part-time MBA in the UK) - The Bradford Executive MBA has

been re-engineered to reflect our changing times. Through themes including

transforming business, strategic leadership, international business (with an

international study trip), innovation and managing risk, participants will find

themselves able to perform more effectively at senior levels, with the sharp

strategic, financial and people skills to do just that. The new EMBA features a

revamped delivery model allowing intense periods of study followed by reflection

and assignments. The taught element of the programme lasts for 24 months, with a

further four to complete the management project. More details

Circular Economy (Distance Learning) MBA - This degree programme provides

participants with the skills required to re-model businesses around concepts such

as re-manufacture, service systems and bio-mimicry concepts which are central to

the concept of "circular economy".

A growing number of businesses are recognising that new business models are

required to provide sustainable competitive advantage. New business opportunities

are emerging around the "circular economy" (sometimes called the performance

economy or cradle-to-cradle) model offering massive scope for innovation and

enterprise.

The circular economy model represents a shift away from reduction of resource

usage and disposal to an emphasis on completely re-designing production systems

and consumer behaviour. Businesses already starting to work within this framework

include Proctor & Gamble, Desso, Phillips and Aveda. More details

Undergraduate Programmes (New for 2012/13) MBus - Our MBus in Business and Management builds on the solid foundations of

our current BSc programmes but is extended to a fourth year studying Master‟s

level modules - hence it is an undergraduate Master‟s qualification. A fundamental

aim of the programme is to add value for future employers. This is achieved by two

individual work based projects which allow application of learning in the work place

and thus ensure that graduates are better equipped to make a contribution to the

workplace.

BSc Operations and Information Management - The surge of several new

economies across the world means that consumers want services 24/7. They

also demand products that are of top quality yet low cost, and they want them

delivered on time every time. These are the challenges to which the Operations

Manager must rise. Our BSc Operations and Information Management is an

innovative and highly relevant course that harnesses the latest thinking from around

the globe to produce Operations Managers who can compete at the highest levels

and in the toughest international environments.

Professor Christopher Gale, Director of Bradford University

Law School

The Law School

The Law School saw record numbers enrolling on the LLB in September 2011 and

applications for 2012 are again on the up. A new LLM in International Legal Studies

will launch in September 2013 and we believe that there is a market both

internationally and domestically – some of our current undergraduates have shown

serious interest in it.

Final year undergraduate students are able to opt for a Clinical Legal Education

module where they spend around 48 hours working with a legal entity – be it in a

Citizens Advise Bureau, a firm of solicitors, or some other. There is also the

Innocence Project where a group of students work „live‟ on a case referred to the

Law School to seek evidence in a possible miscarriage of justice. Both of these

modules show students the „work‟ side of legal practice and, although places are

naturally rationed, considerably improve the employability. We hope to recruit more

„hosts‟ over the next few years.

GDL students are allocated a mentor who is working in a legal practice and this not

only exposes the student to a firm of solicitors, it gives them an insight into how

others have obtained training contracts – even if in a kinder, gentler time!

Members of the local judiciary have spoken to students and a guest lecture on

alternative dispute resolution was given in November 2011 by a member of the

Muslim Arbitration Tribunal.

We hope that alumni will recommend and promote our current and new

programmes, to friends, family and other contacts. This snapshot will have also

alerted you to the many opportunities for alumni and their organisations to get

involved, offering case studies, involvement in the curriculum, mentoring and more.

We are open to other ways of working with you.

Executive Education As Alumni you might not be aware of Executive Education at the School of

Management. Our role is to work with organisations and their managers, within both

private and government sectors to improve skills and capabilities and thus

organisational performance. We tend to work on quite a bespoke basis, developing

programmes driven by the needs of our clients.

Activity can be through non award bearing programmes – where organisations are

looking to develop their managers without the need for a qualification (perhaps

focusing on change, finance for non financial managers, leadership or business

development) - or award bearing programmes - we run Corporate MBAs, Corporate

Post-Graduate Certificates (the first six modules of an MBA) and a Corporate BSc

where we work with high potential school leavers as they part study and part work.

We can also offer consultancy services.

We are also experts at developing business networks for small and medium sized

businesses. The ones we operate tend to be based here in West Yorkshire but we

can provide the expertise to facilitate development in other places - Executive

Education operates regionally, nationally and internationally.

As alumni, Executive Education can be a very important way in which you can

support the school...and one in which the School can support you and/or your

organisation.

If you need now, or in the future, the skills and services that we can bring please do

contact me, [email protected] , and I‟ll be very happy to talk to you or one of

your colleagues. Additionally if you have an ideas about how you could work with

us in your country and/or region then please contact the Alumni Office.

Julian Rawel,

Director of Executive Education

How can you help? Recommendations

It would be great if you could recommend our programmes to family, friends, and

colleagues in your networks. Please remember as part of our Global Campus, we

offer a variety of programmes and study opportunities around the world. Contact

our marketing Team for more details about our “Recommend a Friend Offer”.

Recruitment Fairs and Preview Events

We regularly attend Recruitment Fairs both in the UK and around the world and we

also hold various preview and online events. We are delighted when “local” alumni

can join us to help promote the School and our programmes - alumni are the” ideal

voice” to talk to prospective students and their parents.

Click here for full details of upcoming events and then Contact our Marketing Team

if you‟d like to attend any.

Geographic and Regional Contacts

To further strengthen global alumni activity we are looking for alumni to serve as

contacts and representatives within their country or city of location. We have a

number of alumni contacts situated around the world who serve as key points of

contact and are happy to respond to general enquiries from other alumni, current

and prospective students, and staff.

Alumni contacts can provide insider information about their region or country and

can also share their experiences of studying/working with the School of

Management. More details

Alumni Ambassadors

The role played by our alumni in raising and maintaining the School's brand

worldwide is very important. The School of Management Alumni Ambassadors

Network was launched in 2009 and is a key resource for the School. Working

alongside members of the school‟s alumni, marketing, and programme teams,

ambassadors fulfill an invaluable role by offering information advice and guidance

to prospective students, working with key School contacts including agents,

becoming actively involved in raising the School‟s brand and by promoting our

programmes at a local level in their country or region.

Our Alumni Ambassadors are highly energetic, motivated and committed

individuals with a passion for Bradford University School of Management. To find

One of the greatest ways alumni can work with and support the school is by using

our talent and offering students and alumni the opportunity to engage with them

and their employer. This can be achieved in several different ways.

Placements: by offering undergraduate students on a 4 year programme the

opportunity to spend their year in industry with you or your organisation. We are

looking for local, national and international opportunities in small or large

organisations, where our students can develop. This year we have students placed

in organisations such as the NHS, Cummins Technologies, IBM, Vauxhall,

Peugeot to name but a few.

MBA Management Projects: we are always looking for short term consultancy

projects for MBA students to undertake at the end of their programme. We have a

number of local opportunities but students would also welcome the chance to

undertake a project nationally or internationally.

Job Vacancies: advertise your job opportunities with us. We have a fantastic pool

of undergraduate and postgraduate talent, looking for job opportunities around the

world; we can advertise opportunities to students and alumni. We could also assist

you with finding appropriate candidates based on your requirements etc.

Please forward all enquiries to [email protected]

There are several ways in which you can have an on-going fruitful relationship

with the school.

Deliver a Bradford Guest Lecture: we welcome offers from all alumni to deliver

guest lectures. These opportunities are available globally through the

development of our International network of local alumni groups.

Input into the curriculum: are you now in a role / organisation which you feel

could add value to one of our taught modules? It is one of our KPI‟s to have an

industry / employer input into all modules / electives over the next three years.

This could be either as a case study, a guest lecture or presentation, a factory

visit, or a project carried out for you in the module.

Input into the careers programme: all our students (undergraduate and

postgraduate) are keen to understand what employers are looking for, what are

the routes into different roles/sectors and what will make them stand out in the

job market and to hear it from the experts – i.e. you.

Mentoring: would you like to mentor a final year undergraduate student? We

recently delivered a pilot e-mentoring programme for final year undergraduate

students on three-year programmes. Students benefitted through direct contact

with alumni, by acquiring valuable information and insights into the real world of

work and, moreover, into the industries in which alumni were working. We are

hoping to roll out this programme again in September 2012.

If you feel you would like to work with our talent or offer your talent, please

complete the short Alumni Survey at the end of the newsletter. We will be in

touch to take your offer forward once we have collated alumni responses.

Businesses benefit from our world leading, internationally excellent research. Our

range of activities, the depth of our research, and our close involvement with

industry, commerce and the public sector provide an excellent and highly

supportive research environment. We promote research that passes the "double

hurdle" of producing academically excellent work that is also valuable to

policymakers and practicing business people.

To ensure that our research is commercially applicable, we have established a

number of research centres through which we work with businesses and

organisations.

Centre for Managerial Excellence (CME)

The centre embraces innovative research and knowledge transfer that is practice-

focused and addresses the key global challenges facing businesses. The CME

embraces the worlds of industry and academia to help to build capacity, create and

apply research in the areas of innovation, competitiveness and economic growth.

Accreditations Update EQUIS

We are delighted to advise you that we have once again been re accredited by

EQUIS. They were impressed by the progress the school has made since the

previous accreditation and the seriousness with which it has addressed its area

for improvement. The Awarding Body took particular note of the School's

strengths as outlined in the Peer Review Report and the recent developments in

revising the UG strategy, improving the research culture, and launching Global

Campus. The review panel spoke to current students and alumni, and we would

like to thank those alumni who took part in the visit for their positive contributions.

AACSB

This has been a long journey but we have submitted the final reports to the peer

review team, who will visit the school 21st to 24

th October 2012. This accreditation

looks at how the school is performing against its own mission; it is more focused

on quantitative than qualitative criteria and has more required prescriptive

outcomes than other accreditations. The Peer Review Team will consist of Ellen

Harshman, Dean of John Cook School of Business, St Louis University (Chair of

Panel), Bernard Belletante, Dean and Director General, Euromed Management

(AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB accredited), Jose Ferreira Machado, Dean,

Universidade Nova do Lisboa (AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB accredited) and

Lucienne Mochel, Vice President Accreditation Services, AACSB. We‟re looking

forward to their visit and will advise on the outcome as soon as we are able.

50TH Anniversary As you will be aware 2013/14 sees us celebrate 50 years of delivering excellence.

As part of our 50th Anniversary we will be organising events around the world for

students, staff, alumni and external academic and business partners throughout

2013 and 2014.

A special edition of the alumni matters will update you on our plans for the

anniversary. We are planning guest lectures, Continuing Professional Development

events, dinners and other opportunities for the global School community to come

together. We do hope that you will be able to join in with the celebrations and you

have the opportunity to let us know how you intend to in the alumni survey included

towards the end of the newsletter. Do let us know if you want to visit us in Bradford

or celebrate in your home country - we would like to have as many events around

the world as we can.

Fundraising The School is planning a fundraising campaign as part of the anniversary

celebrations. This will give our community and stakeholders the opportunity to

contribute to an endowment fund which will be used to fund (and name), for

instance, a research Chair, the construction of new student-centred facilities on

campus or the Sustainable Enterprise Centre. Alternatively alumni or their

organisations may prefer to support student bursaries and scholarships, the

establishment of a Virtual Hub for our Global Campus or any other aspect of the

University‟s activities such as cancer research, dementia studies etc.

We do hope that you will be able to join in some of the anniversary activities and

events and also to support us in our fundraising campaign.

Class of 1972 - 40 Year Reunion (June 2012) The Queen was not the only one celebrating in June 2012 as 14 graduates from

the academic years 1969-1972 gathered in Bradford to reacquaint themselves with

the „Management Centre‟ or the School of Management as we now know it.

In their day the current library was the main lecture theatre where lecturers used

overhead projectors and in tutorial rooms chalk on revolving blackboards were the

order of the day with undergraduates making notes on paper. The main hall/

current library were also used to sit all examinations and host guest lecturers. After

graduating they entered industry and currently live in diverse parts of the world

including the UK, Spain, Switzerland, Canada and as far as the Falkland Islands

but felt the need to reconvene the place that had spring-boarded them into a world

of opportunity with their newly acquired management degree. They hope the

current undergraduates & postgraduates get the same opportunities given to them

when they graduate.

The full list of attendees included: Sylvia Adams, Robin Baxter, John Bonnett, Jeff

Gitter, Don Graham, Keith Harrison, Suzan Matthews, Les Pointing, Bob Potter,

Richard Pulleyn, Lynne Rushton, Andy Willis, John Yea, Pete Goudge

Would you like to organise your own reunion? The School Alumni Office

Alumni Groups & Events

Dean‟s Guest Lecture and Launch of Hong Kong Alumni Group

Bradford University School of Management and global partner RDI have organised

a joint Bradford guest lecture and alumni group launch to take place in Hong Kong

on Friday 27 July 2012.

This joint event will include an insightful guest lecture delivered by the Dean, Dr.

Sarah Dixon, about how organisations thrive in rapidly changing and complex

environments and the potential approaches best suited for the success of your

organization. Read More

The event also aims to raise awareness and encourage involvement in a Hong

Kong alumni group as part of our aims to expand our global network of local

groups. Alumni groups are great for reconnecting like minded individuals and those

with shared School of Management experiences so they may network, socialise

and support their alma mater and it is envisaged that a launch of a Hong Kong

group would be beneficial for alumni who live and work in the region. Register now
