On behalf of us all in the Alumni Office may I firstly wish you all a very happy New Year. I hope that 2017 (the year of the Rooster) will be a particularly good one for you and we shall look forward to keeping in touch, hearing your news and, hopefully, being able to catch up in person at some point during the year.
We are planning our events for this year with the first major one being the Graduation ceremonies and Swan Ball for all our new alumni, who will be receiving their degrees on 17th or 18th March. We will do our utmost to make your day a special one and we hope that the weather will do its bit too! We provide a meal for our graduands and their guests after each ceremony (in a marquee on Beloff Lawn) which gives an opportunity to meet up with your lecturers and faculty staff, as well as reconnecting with your peers. We much look forward to seeing you there, and here is a link to the page with all the information you should need - http://www.buckingham.ac.uk/graduation. The Swan Ball takes place on the evening of the 18th and you will see details in this newsletter. Although the event is targeted for the graduates, all alumni are more than welcome to come along.
Our second big event for alumni is the annual reunion. This year we will be holding the event for the year group 1996-2000 and we would love to see as many of you who graduated during those five years as possible. However, if you missed out on your reunion from previous years then do let us know if you might like to attend. The dinner will be held at Church House, Westminster and there will be a cost for tickets but it will be no more than £60. At this event we will also be making the award to the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year 2017. Before then we shall be sending out details of how you can nominate a person of your choice for this award. Our Distinguished Alumnus for 2016 was Mr Chris Smith (European Studies ‘84), who has supported current students and graduates in many ways since he graduated.
Also held throughout the year will be three breakfast and drinks events in London. The first of these will be held at the University’s London premises on Gower Street in February and will be a talk by Dr David Jacques on his most up to date findings at the Blick’s Mead site at Stonehenge. For a taster, here is a link to the webpage -http://www.buckingham.ac.uk/research/hri/fellows/jacques - and if you are interested in attending please do contact Helen on [email protected] for further details.
With very best wishes from us all in the Alumni Office,Anne

We Remember Dr. Joanna Seldon

Joanna Seldon, the wife of Sir Anthony Seldon, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buckingham, has passed away after a long illness.
Sir Anthony said: “She had an incurable cancer for several years, enduring frequent long periods in hospital with incredible grace and courage, but eventually she could no longer prevail against
it.
“I prayed as a young man for a wife I could love all my life and who would make me happy. In Joanna, my prayers were answered 100 times over. She had the best mind of anyone I’ve known
and won the top first in her year at Oxford, where she took her doctorate. I loved her courage, honesty, vulnerability, brilliance, beauty, kindness and innocence.”
Just ten days before she died Joanna completed the last draft of the book about her father. Her biography marks the 50th anniversary of the successful campaign by her late father, Maurice
Pappworth, to stop medical experiments on human guinea pigs.
Joanna was an author and wrote a number of acclaimed novels and short stories as well as a large number of poems. As an English teacher she played a key role in school life at Wellington
College, where Anthony was previously Master.
Joanna, who was 62, attended University events including Graduation, formal dinners and judging of the University’s annual duck race, much loved by students, staff and local residents.
The couple have three grown-up children, Jessica, Susannah and Adam.
