3 Royal Visit and Honorary Graduation Ceremony 2016

Dear all,

I do hope that many of you have had a chance to see the UK this autumn. The colours have been stunning – if not quite up to New England standards. Now for the frosts!

Next month we will give you an update on the Dorchester dinner/dance, but later this month there will be the final big party of the 40 anniversary year, and this will be held in Lagos. The Swan Ball dinner, which had been scheduled for 18 November, has been postponed until next year but in its place the Nigerian Alumni Association will be organising a Boat Club house party on 20 November for all alumni members. Admission to the house party will be free. If you are able to attend you will be able to see the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alistair Alcock, Tino Santonocito (International Business Development Manager), Hephzibah Egede (Senior Lecturer, Law) and Gurcharan Singh (Senior Lecturer, Accounting & Finance). Details of the event are as follows:

Date: Sunday, 20 November 2016

Venue: New Ember Creek, Foreshore Habours, Osborne Foreshore Estate Phase 2, Waterfront Ikoyi, Lagos.

Time: 2pm

Admission is free for members of the alumni and their guests. For further details on the event, please contact [email protected]. I do hope those of you based in Nigeria, or anyone who is visiting, may be able to join this fabulous party.

We are so grateful to everyone who has sent us news for the monthly updates. We apologise if we ever have to keep you waiting, but sometimes we have quite a lot to include. Please do keep the stories and news coming – it is fantastic to hear news from across the world from our amazing alumni.

With very best wishes,Anne

The Duke of York joined staff, students and alumni at the University of Buckingham on Monday 24 October to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the world's first undergraduate venture creation programme.

The Duke of York, who is an advocate of enterprise and entrepreneurship for young people, met both current and former students on Buckingham’s BSc Business Enterprise undergraduate course including Elizabeth Smith, a student who, with two colleagues, has set up a gym wear brand, students Matthew Campbell and Sean Ruane whose business helps design students find relevant work experience and alumni Sean Obedih, who runs a website that has generated a community of investors.

The Duke of York said: “This is a truly innovative course that has created a plethora of talented entrepreneurs. There is a wonderful range of businesses with some really exciting projects in keeping with the University of Buckingham's pioneering reputation. It is important for the future prosperity that the country embraces an entrepreneurial approach and courses like this help to promote creativity amongst young people."

University of Buckingham Business Enterprise Programme Director Nigel Adams said: “Buckingham has led the way with an innovative approach to enterprise education which has proved to be very successful. We were the first in the world to offer an undergraduate venture creation programme which has led to students running businesses from importing wooden sunglasses to establishing a Nigerian wedding planning website. Many of the businesses have been successful and the experience of running some of them has led to very successful entrepreneurial careers for many others."

The Duke chatted to Business Enterprise students and alumni, staff, visiting entrepreneurs and mentors. He also looked around the current, small Buckingham Enterprise Hub and saw plans for a larger building, as part of the one and a half hour visit to the main campus in Hunter Street. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buckingham, Sir Anthony Seldon and the Duke of York both spoke at the event. Two decades ago the Queen visited the University of Buckingham to open the Anthony de Rothschild Business School building.

The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People by Oscar Wilde

Thursday 10 and Friday 11 November, the Radcliffe Centre, 7.30pm to 10.30pm

This farcical and well-loved comedy combines witty dialogue, larger-

than-life characters and a satirical view of Victorian conventions and marriage. Although it was first performed in 1895, Alistair

Alcock (Deputy Vice-Chancellor) has set his production in the 1920s highlighting the confusion and misunderstandings between the

Victorian era and the modern age. The cast is made up of students and staff (with a few surprise appearances) and it is guaranteed to be a wonderful and entertaining evening. Refreshments will be served

in the interval and are included in the ticket price of £7.20 per person (which also includes VAT). Following on from the success of An

Evening with William Shakespeare in June, this is likely to be a sold-out event, so book your tickets today.

We advise you to book your tickets on the external University website (rather than on the intranet), tickets can be booked via the following link: http://www.buckingham.ac.uk/event/the-importance-of-being-

The University held its first Matriculation Ceremony on 17 October.

The ceremony welcomed all new students to the University, in the same venue that they will be graduating in when they finish their studies.

We wish them all the best of luck with their degrees, and can't wait to see them at Graduation in a few years time.

Last Month...

Last month we asked if you recognized the building in this picture.

The building shown is now the Hunter Street Library (once known as the Denning Law Library). The picture to the left was taken

before renovations started to the Hunter Street Campus. The building now looks very different!

Thank you to Helaine Whiteside (Law 1987) for your response.

Campus

Cockapoo puppies, Darcie and Millie, have been bought by the University as a means to tackle mental health issues amongst students. The number of students affected by mental illness is growing. It is now said that 1 in 10 students in the UK could be diagnosed with some form of mental illness. The puppies are looked after by Dee Bunker, Head of Student Welfare, and not only encourage students to visit Student Welfare to talk about issues they may be having, but also help them to relax during times of stress.

To read more about the work Darcie and Millie are doing, please see the articles below:
