About INSEAD, The Business School for the World

As one of the world’s leading and largest graduate business schools, INSEAD brings together people, cultures and ideas to change lives and to transform organisations. A global perspective and cultural diversity are reflected in all aspects of our research and teaching.

With campuses in Europe (France), Asia (Singapore) and Abu Dhabi, INSEAD’s business education and research spans three continents. Our 148 renowned Faculty members from 40 countries inspire more than 1,300 degree participants annually in our MBA, Executive MBA, specialised master’s degrees (Master in Finance, Executive Master in Consulting and Coaching for Change) and PhD programmes. In addition, more than 9,500 executives participate in INSEAD’s Executive Education programmes each year.

In addition to INSEAD’s programmes on our three campuses, INSEAD participates in academic partnerships with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia & San Francisco); the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University near Chicago; the Johns Hopkins University/SAIS in Washington DC and the Teachers College at Columbia University in New York; and MIT Sloan School of Management in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In Asia, INSEAD partners with School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University in Beijing and China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai. INSEAD is a founding member in the multidisciplinary Sorbonne University created in 2012, and also partners with Fundação Dom Cabral in Brazil.

INSEAD became a pioneer of international business education with the graduation of the first MBA class on the Fontainebleau campus in Europe in 1960. In 2000, INSEAD opened its Asia campus in Singapore. And in 2007 the school began an association in the Middle East, officially opening the Abu Dhabi campus in 2010.

Around the world and over the decades, INSEAD continues to conduct cutting edge research and to innovate across all our programmes to provide business leaders with the knowledge and sensitivity to operate anywhere. These core values have enabled us to become truly “The Business School for the World.”

Dear Alumni,

As you have experienced for yourself, INSEAD is a truly unique institution. We graduate inspired individuals equipped with sound business knowledge and international wisdom. Through the vision laid out by our founders, we have truly become an independent and entrepreneurial business school with an unmatched global outreach and unparalleled diversity of students, executive participants and alumni.

This weekend, I am excited to share my plans with you and I want to hear your views. Our Alumni Reunions team has worked hard and put together an incredible programme for you. Besides the plenary session which will focus on the MBA programme and our Alumni network, our faculty forums will also cover important themes relevant to the business world of today.

Throughout the weekend’s social and networking events, your reunion will provide you with the ideal opportunity to expand your horizons – a chance to, not only reconnect with your former classmates, but also to interact with Alumni of other classes that hold the same INSEAD spirit.

I look forward to sharing many conversations with you this special weekend and invite you to join me in imagining the incredible potential of INSEAD, with a powerful network of over 51,000 Alumni in 172 countries united, as we create an ambitious future.

Unbound together:Leading and living in the age of nomadic professionalism

It has become cliché to note that profound economic, cultural and technological change has shaken up the world of work over the last three decades—and that the pace of change is only accelerating. Some look upon those changes with optimism, remarking that they have liberated us. We are freer than ever to move around in order to pursue careers aligned with our true self and purpose. Others, rather more dourly, note than we all seem a bit lonelier and more confused in the globalised workplace. Living and leading authentically and with purpose, in short, has become more possible and yet more elusive than ever. In this interactive session, Professor Petriglieri will discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by the rise of nomadic professionalism—and how individuals and organisations need to rethink the practice and development of leadership to avoid its pitfalls and experience its benefits.

Gianpiero Petriglieri Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour

Gianpiero Petriglieri is Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour at INSEAD. He directs the Management Acceleration Programme, the school’s flagship executive programme for emerging leaders, and the initiative for Learning Innovation and Teaching Excellence. Gianpiero’s research explores how and where people develop and sustain the personal foundations and professional abilities to exercise leadership mindfully, effectively and responsibly. He is particularly concerned with the development of leadership in a day and age in which authenticity and mobility have replaced loyalty and advancement as hallmarks of virtue and success. In this context, he contends, a narrow focus on the acquisition of new knowledge and skills is inadequate—if not detrimental—to develop competent and trustworthy leaders.

Building on insights from his research, Gianpiero has refined a unique approach to experiential leadership development that aims to deepen and accelerate the development of individual leaders as well as to broaden and strengthen leadership communities within and across organisations. Alongside the Management Acceleration Programme, he directs customised leadership development programmes for multinationals in a variety of industries. He also consults and speaks widely on the topic of how to develop and exercise leadership in fast-changing, uncertain and diverse workplaces.

A recipient of numerous research and teaching awards, Gianpiero has chaired the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on New Models of Leadership, and was recently shortlisted for the Leadership award by the Thinkers50, the ranking of the most influential management thinkers in the world.

Digital.Disruption@INSEAD

The INSEAD community has long celebrated entrepreneurial spirit as one of its core values. How is the school contributing to the current age of disruption where technologies are transforming one sector after another? The session will be in three parts.

I. INSEAD Case Study BlaBlaCarWhat are today’s INSEAD MBA’s studying in their core strategy course? Professor Zemsky will share highlights from the new INSEAD case on BlaBlaCar. Founded by two INSEAD MBAs the company received the highest funding ever of any French startup and has succeeded in overcoming the fragmentation of the European market to become the global leader in long-haul ride sharing with a valuation of $1.5 billion.

II. Disrupting Management EducationINSEAD pioneered the one year MBA, business simulations, executive education and the concept of the international business school. Are we still a force for disruption in management education? Professor Zemsky will share an inside view of INSEAD’s strategy in online education where we are delivering cutting edge solutions with the speed and scale necessary to support corporate transformations. Find out why INSEAD online solutions for companies like Microsoft and Accenture were recently recognised by the L&D community as the most “Innovative Learning and Development Programme” and as having the “Best Results of a Learning Programme.”

Fontainebleau

The Château de Fontainebleau – +33 (0)1 60 71 50 70 (www.musee-chateau-fontainebleau.fr) is open from 09.30 to 17.00. Allow approximately 2 hours for a non-guided visit.

The Château gardens are open from 09.00 to 18.00.

Marché de Fontainebleau – Sunday morning is market day in Fontainebleau from 8.00 to 13.00. The market is located at Marché St-Louis, rue de Ferrare. A few shops will be open on Sunday morning as well.

Near Fontainebleau

Barbizon (www.barbizon.fr) is a lovely village to visit. You may stroll through the village itself, or enjoy the nearby forest with rock formations. To reach the rock formations, go through the village into the forest and park at the end of the road. Barbizon is located halfway between Fontainebleau and Cély-en-Bière.

The Auberge Ganne – Museum of the Barbizon School - 92 rue Grande, +33 (0)1 60 66 22 27 is open from 10.00 to 12.30 and 14.00 to 17.00. There is also the studio of Jean-François Millet, +33 (0)1 60 66 21 55, 27 rue Grande, which is open from 9.30 to 12.30 and 14.00 to 17.30.

Further afield, but worth the drive, is the Chapelle St. Blaise in Milly-la-Forêt. Jean Cocteau decorated the interior of this small medieval chapel and is buried here. The chapel is open from 10.00 to 12.00 and 14.00 to 18.00. Tel. : +33 (0)1 64 98 84 94

Whilst in Milly-la-Forêt, you might wish to visit the Conservatoire des Plantes +33 (0)1 64 98 83 77 (www.cnpmai.net) which has an extensive collection of herbal and medicinal plants. Hours are 10.00 to 18.00. North of town, towards Moigny-sur-Ecole, you will find the sculpture of ‘Le Cyclope’ +33 (0)1 64 98 95 18 which is a work of modern art and rather intriguing. Opening hours between 11.00 and 16.15 (only guided visits). www.milly-la-foret.fr/-Le-Cyclop

In nearby Soisy-sur-Ecole, there is the Verrerie d’Art, +33 (0)1 64 98 00 03 (www.verrerie-soisy.com), a glass-blowing studio and gift shop set in a lovely garden with a stream. Opening hours 14.30 to 18.30.

Moret-sur-Loing is situated at the south-east corner of the extensive forest that surrounds the Chateau de Fontainebleau. This historic town is perhaps rather overlooked by tourists because of its famous neighbours, however Moret-sur-Loing should be on your list of places to visit in the region as it has a pleasant historic centre with some monuments of interest. Although it is only a few kilometres south of the Seine, it is actually the tributary of this river called the Loing that passes through the centre of the town.
