Cyrus McCormick, Jr., President of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, was a devoted member of the Jekyll Island Club for 45 years. McCormick was instrumental to golf course construction on the island as part of the Golf Committee and

donated tractors and vehicles to help maintain the course. McCormick’s Grill bears his name in honor of his contributions to

the game on Jekyll Island.

The first golf course opened on Jekyll Island in 1899, just north of the current historic district. The Willie Dunn, Jr.-designed course

was just the beginning of a long tradition. Legends such as Walter J. Travis continued to shape the game on Jekyll Island and

today’s Great Dunes Golf Course is recognized the Walter J. Travis Society as a part of his legacy.

Golfers and naturalists alike enjoy Jekyll Island’s 63 holes of golf. All are Audubon Sanctuary certified, a designation held by only three clubs of this size in the world. The Jekyll Island Golf Club

welcomes players of all ages and skill levels year round through juniors, college, and senior tournaments, as well as individual play.
