    Hart Davis Hart Wine Co.

    November 2016

2016 has been a very special year for Chicago. Hart Davis Hart will fi nish the year as the leading wine auction house in the US, a position that we’ve maintained for 5 out of the last 6 years. The team at HDH is the most experienced and trusted in the industry and we remain committed to providing the best possible service. I’d like to take this opportunity to extend our appreciation to you, our loyal consignors and buyers, who have allowed us to build a consistently strong auction series.

Those who attended the November auction or participated on our website or mobile app witnessed a rarity. I cannot recall another time in my twenty-six years with the gavel when we purposefully paused a sale. However, on November 5th we halted the auction as the World Series Champion Cubs paraded down Michigan Avenue immediately outside the windows of TRU. The roar of the crowd overtook the sale room, and we were honored to pause for this remarkable young team that has brought so much spirit to our city. We like to think that Chicago is a place where together we follow Cubs manager Joe Maddon’s lead and perspective to “have fun and run hard to fi rst base.” Thanks again to those who made 2016 an exceptional year for HDH.

We are ending 2016 on a high note with this remarkable three-day auction. The sale has depth and diversity that is rarely seen in a single auction. The sale kicks off with A Tantalizing Collection of Burgundy from the Cellar of A Canadian Gentleman (lots 1-505). The offering is highlighted by stunning Burgundy including 3 bottles of 1985 Vosne-Romanée, Cros Parantoux, Henri Jayer and a case of 1988 Romanée-St-Vivant, Domaine Leroy. Also of note are Rarest Wines from the Extensive Cellar of a Prominent Collector (lots 1443-1953). This breathtaking consignment includes classic Bordeaux and top Burgundy such as a case of 1989 Château Haut-Brion and twelve bottles of 1999 Musigny, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier. Other highlights from the sale are the impressive array of White Burgundy including many selections from Domaine Lefl aive and Domaine Raveneau as well as 63 lots of Screaming Eagle spanning 20 vintages.

We hope you will join us for this remarkable three-day auction, starting on Thursday, December 15. Chicago will be hopping with holiday spirit and we will be opening some fantastic bottles to celebrate. We have enjoyed a long relationship with TRU, one of the fi nest restaurants in Chicago. TRU was recently honored with their second Michelin star, a tribute to Anthony Martin and his incredible team. If you are not able to join us, we urge you to participate using our industry-leading bidding platform. Visit our website (auction.hdhwine.com) or download the mobile app (available on iOS and Android devices) to research and review the 4,324 lots, place absentee bids, and participate in real-time on sale day.

    Sincerely,

    Paul HartChairman & CEO

Purchased Through Reputable Merchants and Stored in a Temperature- and Humidity-Controlled Cellar.

    DOMAINE DE LA ROMANEE-CONTI

The legendary reputation of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s wines dates to the 1700s, when the then Prince de Conti reserved the estate’s entire production for his private use at extravagant palace parties. The quality of DRC’s wines are attributed to the Domaine’s propagation of Pinot Noir vines with a pristine genetic legacy, its keen respect for the terroir and climat of its holdings, and the expertise of the individuals caring for the vines and their fruit. Today, the Domaine owns 29 hectares of the highest caliber vineyards in all of Burgundy, with seven red Grand Crus, two white Grand Crus, and, occasionally, a red Premier Cru.

“There is no question that the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti…is Burgundy’s most famous estate…The abbreviation ‘DRC’ has as much signifi cance for the wine world as ‘IBM’ and ‘GE’ do in the business world…Unquestionably, in the greatest vintages, they literally stand alone…a bright, shining empire that cannot be matched for beauty or power.” Robert Parker Jr., The World’s Greatest Wine Estates

    DOMAINE DUJAC

Domaine Dujac is owned and operated by the Jacques Seysses family, known throughout the region for their meticulous attention to detail. Their diligence in vinifi cation seems to make vintage matter less for Dujac than for other producers, and has helped the Domaine produce great wine even in poor years. Dujac wines are designed for aging, and are often at their best after ten to twenty years of cellaring. They are characterized for their exceptional bouquets, silky texture, and overall elegance.

    RENE ENGEL

If life were fair, René Engel would still be in the hands of the Engel family. Philippe Engel took over the estate in 1981 from his father, Pierre, who died young, and by all accounts Philippe transformed a good producer into a great one. But Philippe, too, died young, of a heart attack at 49 in 2005. With no heirs, the domaine was sold to François Pinault and is now called Domaine d’Eugénie. Engel is a great example of wines that express all the distinctive beauty of their terroir, enhanced by the personal touch of the winemaker. These are precise, focused red Burgundies of Vosne-Romanée that amplify the sense of wonder in wine, and they remind us that no matter how often we try to rationally analyze wine, they show their true measure in the emotions they evoke. Though the Engel terroir may have been lost, one must take every opportunity to appreciate such wines.

    MICHEL LAFARGE

The Lafarge domaine was established by Michel Lafarge's great-great-grandparents early in the 19th century, and it has been worked by Lafarges ever since. Frédéric, son of Michel, produced his fi rst vintage in 1978. The father and son duo make a great partnership with Frédéric saying, "My father and I are a very good team...Always with my father, if we have two ideas, we discuss it until we have one.” The domaine turns into a full-on family affair as Frédéric's wife - Chantal - also works in the winery and their daughter - Clothilde - is ready to join in. The family has a singular vision to make wines prized for their deep, soulful beauty. These wines, made at the family's estate in Volnay, are modest in the best sense of the word; not showy, but respectful and expressive of their terroirs, graceful, dignifi ed and altogether captivating. The domaine is small, owning just under 25 acres of vines, but with a conversion to biodynamics in 2000 and a family of winemakers that are knowledgeable about the land, the wines have become models of their genres and a jewel in any collection.

    LEROY

Deemed the “greatest estate in Burgundy” by Robert Parker, Leroy’s reputation precedes itself. Maison Leroy was founded in 1868 and grew rapidly as a négociant, priding itself on carefully purchasing only the best wines to represent the Leroy name. In 1988, Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy expanded the estate vineyards by purchasing the vineyards of Charles Noellat and Philippe-Remy, and founded Domaine Leroy. These carefully-raised low-yield vines create wines known for “…extraordinary ripeness, unctuousness, and opulence, with no hard tannin to be found…” Robert Parker Jr., The World’s Greatest Wine Estates
