Finishers The problem clearly dates back to ancient times. Jesus recognized the tendency in Luke 14:28-30 with these words:

28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’

Jesus’ forefather Solomon addressed the matter this way in Ecclesiastes 7:8: “Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.”

Starting something is easy. Solomon associates the beginning of a thing with pride. How often have you thought or said, “I’m going to do this” or “I’ve got a great idea”? Big dreams and bold claims are easy to make before a task begins.

But as Jesus and Solomon highlight, seeing a thing to its completion requires the qualities of wisdom, patience, and faithfulness.

Why are commitments often unmet, promises broken, and projects left unfinished? According to Jesus, it’s because we didn’t “count the cost” (Luke 14:28). Here are common ways we fail to count the cost of our commitments:

We commit to too many things. The world tells us “you can do whatever you want” and “you can do it all!” Life is about choices. Whenever we choose one thing, we have not chosen other things. It is easy to sign-up for too much and overload our schedules. If I commit to everything, however, I have committed myself to nothing.

We commit to the wrong things. In the Parable of the Soils, Jesus compares the thorny soil to those who hear the word but then “the cares of the world and deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things” choke it out (Mark 4:19). “Other things” often win out over the Lord.

We commit to hard things. Jobs, relationships, and the Christian life are all worth doing, and they all will be met with temptations to quit. When something worth doing gets hard, it is a sign that you are on the path to life. “For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Matthew 7:14). So don’t quit!

The world and the church do not need more starters. We need more finishers — people who commit to the right things, maintain those commitments, and see them through to completion. Anyone can start something, but the words “Well done, good and faithful servant” are reserved for the finishers. — Blaine
