Common Core Standards:

Life ScienceBasic Needs of Living Things

This topic focuses on the physical needs of living things in Ohio. Energy from the sun or food, nutrients, water, shelter and air are some of the physical needs of living things.

1. Living things have basic needs, which are met by obtaining materials from the physical environment. (ORC Resources) 2. Living things survive only in environments that meet their needs. (ORC Resources)

Lesson Summary:

We, as a class, will look at the classification of animals such as amphibians, mammals, reptiles, etc.

Estimated Duration:

This lesson will be over a weeks time. Our science time goes for about 20-30 each day. Each day we will be going over a classification of animals (Mon- Mammals, Tues- Reptiles, Wed- Amphibians, Thurs- Fish & Birds, Fri- Review).

Commentary:

Students always have an interest in animals, and now they will found some differences between mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, and fish. In first grade, this will probably be their first introduction to the classification of animals; therefor I want to make it fun and memorable. We will be using websites, worksheets, and games to have fun and to learn about different animals.

Instructional Procedures:

Day one we will give a brief overview of what all the classifications of animals are (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish). This will take about 10 minutes to kind of explain the classification and a brief description of each. Then we will move into more detail about mammals. This will take about 15 minutes. We will be using their science textbooks to read about them. Students will be able to read aloud and then I will clarify and review the section that was just read. After the mammal section we will do a worksheet (made by myself), as a class, on the smartboard to review mammals. Doing the worksheet should only take about 5 minutes. Student that is picked will be able to come to the board to complete one question of the worksheet.

This will be the same process for the next 3 days (Day 2- Reptiles, Day 3- Amphibians, Day 4- Fish/Birds).There will be different worksheets for different days according to which animal we are studying.

On Day 5 it will be a review day. I will be using a Prezi to review the information with the students. I will go through the Prezi and if the students have questions they can ask them. This will take about 10 minutes. Then we will play a review game- jeopardy. I have made an online jeopardy game that will be used on the smartboard. We will divide into teams and then will be able to play the game. Students can encourage their teammates and have fun while we review the lesson on the classification of animals.

Pre-Assessment:To pre-assess this lesson I will ask the students question such as What do reptiles have on their skin instead of hair? (scales) Each day I would ask questions that will be answered throughout that days lesson. I will be able to go into more depth about it if I think the students do not know it or need more information about a classification. There will technically be data to review, I will just be able to read the students and ask them what they do/dont know.

Scoring Guidelines:Again, students wont technically be scored on what they do or dont know because I will just be asking general questions about the specific classification. If the students are not able to answer the questions, I will go into more depth about the lesson. Some days they will know a lot of certain animals, and it will be the opposite other days. I will be using the review worksheet at the end of the lesson to assess them as well.

Post-Assessment:I will be using the review worksheets on the smartboard every day for a post-assessment. At the end of the whole lesson over the classification of animals, we will go over the Prezi as well as play online jeopardy as a review game. Students will also take a test over the whole unit.

Scoring Guidelines:While the students play the jeopardy game, it will keep score of what team is winning and what team is losing. The score does not speak for every student, but can give me an indication of what students know and do not know. Students will also be taking an exam over the whole unit and will be graded and scored on that.

Differentiated Instructional SupportIf students need extra help, there will be extra worksheets given. Students will also be able to play the jeopardy game after we have already done it as a class. They will be able to use the smartboard at recess time (if inside) and possibly at homework time. The higher students could also help the lower students by doing the worksheets as a group and even re-reading the sections as a group.

Extensionhttp://www.sheppardsoftware.com/content/animals/kidscorner/games/animalclassgame.htm

This website lets students classify animals and hits the standards that I have gone over in my lesson.

Homework Options and Home ConnectionsParents will be given links to the jeopardy game as well as the prezi I will present to the students while we are doing this lesson. They will be able to use their computer, laptop, ipad at home while working with their child as well as reviewing.

Interdisciplinary ConnectionsOther than Science, this lesson can be integrated into Language Arts. Students will be reading as well as writing during the lessons. This science lesson can also be math, if you count how many classification there are and how many characteristics each classification has. Language Arts and Math can easily be integrated into this Science lesson.
