IT’S BEEN OUR TIME2015 Salutatorian addreSS

By Alexander Danilowicz

Inthespiritofthistruebrotherhood,wearegenuinelyhappyforeachother,becausewhenanySaintsmanwins,weallwin.

It’s been quite a journey with all of you. In the last four years, we’ve been on a steady diet of Unitas, Veri-

tas, and Caritas. Those are fancy words, but ultimately unity, truth, and love are the very essence of this graduation night. Four years isn’t a lot of time in the course of human history, but in our lives, it’s been a time of amazing transformation. It’s been our time. Thefreshmenwhospenttheirfirstweeksofhighschoolbum-bling in the hallways now call the Saints campus a second home. Theninthgraderswhowerenervousgoingtotheirfirsthomecom-ing dance just attended prom. The 14-year-olds who couldn’t tell you a thing about Keynesian economics or Walt Whitman are now continuing their studies at some of the most elite universities in the world. Our incredible achievements as students, scholars, writers, athletes, actors; our friends and our girlfriends; our fun experienc-es—these are things not just the result of self-discipline and good genes.Theyarefirstandforemost,theresultofaneducationatSt.Augustine High School, rooted in the three core, Augustinian values weknowsowell. AsIlookoutintothecrowd,Iamremindedhowweareunifiedby our shared accomplishments. Manyofusweren’tonthefield, yetweshareapieceofthatCIF Championship trophy. The majority of us aren’t going to play footballatStanfordorbaseballatBerkeley, orstudyengineeringatRensselaer or law at Harvard, but a part of us will be. In the spirit of this true brotherhood, we are genuinely happy for each other, because when any Saintsman wins, we all win. Theclassof2015leftanimportantmarkonthisschool.Thisclass won’t get to experience the new gym or student activities center, but many of the families and alumni in this room donated to ensure its completion. As we leave Saints, it’s great to have a sense that the school is just getting better. With this year’s matriculation, ournetworkofSaintsmenhasattainednewheightsinitsdiversityand its reach. We are a family of 171, but I hope you don’t forget the other members: our parents, our priests, and Jesus. OurparentssacrificedtogiveusaCatholic,Augustinianeduca-tion—toughsacrificesthatsomeusdon’tevenknowabout.You,ourparents and our guardians—you chose the way of truth. faculty—teachers and administrators—who have taught us not to be embarrassedtosaygoodmorning, thankyou, andIloveyou. Among us is the St. Augustine High School class of 1965, celebrating their 50th reunion. They, as well as the other 90 classes that have gone before us, remind us that we aren’t just high school graduates; we are Saintsmen. As we prepare to leave the safe harbor of St. Augustine High School, as we steel ourselves for colleges beyond the land of eternal sunshine, I’m sure you wish many people were coming with you. But loveneverwalksalone. The unity of your brothers, the truth of your parents and teach-ers, and the love of Jesus are coming along for the ride. Saints and its values and everything you’ve learned here, are with us now and willbewithuswhereverourfuturejourneystakeus. WONDERS OF THE SaINTS EXPERIENCEBaccalaureate Mass Speech*

ByChristianOnwuka,Classof2015

As the days have gone by, as the finals pass along, and as the years fly away, people continually ask each and every Saintsman “What is the Saints Experience?”… Personally, I struggle to answer this question. Why? Because people expect a set, standard answer to the question; matter of fact, you’re all probably expecting me to give you a definition. I may be up here, but this moment, this event is not about me. This is about the St. Augustine High School Class of 2015, so allow me to break down the Saints Experience through their eyes, and their person-alities. Thfe Saints Experience is unique to every individual student, because it’s up to what piques that student’s interest or intrigues that student to get involved. now, I’m not going to mention everybody, but I’m going to show you what the true Saints experience is, through the examples of many classmates. There are kids like Matthew & Eammon, students who found their passion in drama, being involved in every high school production and even having the creativity of putting together their own production themselves. There are kids like Edmund, Alex, and Rex, who volunteer every week to help lead us in our Mass, whether through music or reading or scriptures. Kids like daniel, Krauss, and Zach who are known as the comedians of campus, yet show their own maturity as they cook it up in The Grilling Society. There are kids like david, daniel, Sebastian and Ryan, who look to serve their communities as holy servants, being the lights that God has put in all of us, and shining bright themselves. There are kids like Rodrigo, Fernando, Jerry and Ricardo, who commute over 2 hours daily to not only excel in the classroom, but have shown their wide understanding of music in daddy’s musical presentations. There are kids like Matthew, Tyrus, and Frank, who are the exact opposite of the cliché term “dumb jock”, showing their excellence in their respec-tive sports and shining with their intelligence in the classroom. There are kids like George, Lucas, Austin and Chris, whose hard work in the classroom & true love for this amazing country has given them the opportunity to protect and serve. There are kids like Malcolm, Ryan, Corwin, Zach, Sean, Mikie, and Arthur, who love a great joke and always show their enthusiasm for this school. There are kids like Rufus, Sean and Carson, who although quiet, have a huge sense of humor and have a true genuine side to themselves. There are kids like Bryan, Matt, Thomas and Luis, the faces of leadership at this school, being positive role models not only to younger Saintsmen, but their graduating peers as well. As you can see, we’re an interesting batch of Seniors. We’re weird, we’re quirky, we’re spontaneous; but mostly, we’re friends. Saints is an atmo-sphere in which you can be yourself. Saints has provided us much more than a rigorous education; it has been as much about our hearts as it has been our minds. As a result, we are poised, confident and articulate young men who understand the values of unity, truth & love. As we prepare to leave nutmeg St, we are aware of our need to purposefully serve our community, to develop our own characters, and to love others as Jesus loved us. We no longer wonder at the meaning of the Saints Experience… we have lived it. We are friends. We are brothers. We are Saintsmen.

* By tradition the St. Augustine Medal honoree is chosen to deliver the Baccalaureate Speech at the awards program leading up to graduation night ceremonies.

For the past 30 years, as per its seasonal tradition, the San diego Union-Tribune publishes the names and grade point averages of student-athletes who participated in the 2015 spring season in high school varsity sports. This year, 7,565 juniors and seniors achieved at least a 3.0 grade point

average. Some schools report cumulative grade point averages; others like Saints reported third quarter marks for at least some teams. In this year’s UT All Academic Team roster, St. Augustine High was represented in baseball, golf, volleyball, lacrosse, swimming, track and tennis. Seniors earning the highest GPA in each sport are pictured. Thank you to the management of the San diego Union-Tribune for providing this important service to the community by recognizing top scholar-athletes throughout San diego County.

Justin is headed to Harvard and Andres is undecided but he is leaning to University of California, Santa Barbara or Rensselaer Poly. So far, since 2000, twelve Saints-men have been awarded a Gates Scholarship. The goal of the Gates prize is to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with financial need to reach their highest potential.

education will be greatly missed, but her loving image as both an educator and a mentor will never be forgotten. Earlier this year, she was proclaimed an Honorary Saintsman (H-’15). Her farewell speech at Saints 91st Commencement Ceremony was her final of-ficial appearance as a member of the faculty. “Winnie has been a perfect freshman English teacher be-cause she simply 'gets' boys,” said Mr. James Horne, Saints Princi-pal. “She welcomes their fidgety, impulsive, active and distracted ways and helps shape them into gentleman and scholars. Saints will miss her dearly and we wish her the best in retirement.” Mrs. Arnn began her teaching career at Saints in the fall of 1995 after completing her degree at Point Loma nazarene University. She graduated with a passion to educate and to assist young men as they navigate adolescence on the road to adult-hood. With a senior son (Adrian Roy Arnn, ’96), who had already been attending Saints, Mrs. Arnn quickly adapted to the school community. She began teaching English, first to sophomores, then to freshmen by her second year. As an English IA teacher, Mrs. Arnn was able to guide her students down the path to success by instill-ing proper organizational and study skills early in their careers. She took it upon herself to provide each student with the founda-tions of what it means to be a Saintsman. “Mrs. Arnn’s class took advantage of the way we learn as boys. She rewarded our efforts with her loving care and generos-ity. It’s a shame to see Saints’ most loved teacher leave,” senior Michael Leahy said. “My Saints career would not have been the same without her." With extensive experience as well as innate ability, Mrs. Arnn is considered by many to be expert in boys’ education. Her style is one that allows boys to get on their feet to assume an active role in the classroom. "I have had the op-portunity to experience Mrs. Arnn as both a teacher and as a fellow faculty member,” Mr. Gary Osberg said. “Without her influence, it is hard to say that I would be where I am today as a member of the faculty. There is no teacher who cares for her students and fellow faculty as much as Mrs. Arnn.” She hopes to use her free time to travel to an ac-tive volcano and the Cape of Good Hope, both goals on her bucket list of things to do. In her 20 years of service, Mrs. Arnn has provided the opportunity for students to experience growth, faculty to achieve greatness, and an institu-tion to attain the highest level of merit. The Saints community extends its deepest gratitude for her years of service and wishes Mrs. Arnn the best in her future travels. Even after her departure, Mrs. Arnn will forever be remembered for her ability to bring out the best in all of us. And, she insists she will remain among the school’s biggest fans: athletically and academically.
