and practice basic math skills. You’ll findmazes, crossword puzzles, word search-es, riddle searches, magic squares, andmore. As an added bonus, your studentswill sharpen their reasoning skills andproblem-solving abilities as they puzzleover these pages.

How to Use This BookEach puzzle is designed to reinforce abasic math skill. At the top of each page,you will see the skill in bold letters. TheTable of Contents also has a complete listof topics to enable you to identify theactivities that will correlate with your curriculum easily.

GroupingStudents can complete all of these activi-ties alone or with a partner, depending onyour goals for the lesson. If you wouldlike students to share problem-solvingstrategies and communicate about math-ematical ideas, have them work in pairs.You may want students to use the activi-ties independently after they have com-pleted other work or to reinforce specificmathematical skills.

Materials NeededAll of the activities require paper, pencil,and an eraser. Brain Rattler (page 38)requires glue and scissors. We recommendthat students use a calculator on ExponentExperts Only (page 16), Galactic Math(page 40), and Computer Glitch (page 43).

Taking It FurtherStudents not only enjoy solving mathe-matics puzzles; they enjoy and benefitfrom making them, too. After your stu-dents have completed several activities ofone puzzle type, give them the opportuni-ty to create their own puzzles based onfamiliar formats. Choose several student-made puzzles to copy, and distribute themfor the other students to solve.

My students enjoyed making puzzles somuch that we extended the idea even further: We had a Math Puzzle Afternoonfor which each student created a puzzle.We made ten copies of each student’spuzzle and placed the puzzles in stacksaround the room. The students spent theafternoon going from one desk to another solving puzzles and enjoying math createdby their classmates.
