The Indian Independence Day in Kashmir was staged by India to show that the Kashmiris support them. There is no truth in it. When Kashmir was hit by flood, some Indian officials came and asked us to go up the boat. That was just to take photos and show others. Soon after, they left. There was no help provided for the Kashmiris. Likewise, the Indian soldiers in Kashmir have caused much harm to us. There were many cases of abuse by them and we are suffering. In short, the presence of the Indian soldiers in Kashmir has led to nothing but suffering for the people in Kashmir. The people of Kashmir suffer the most in the fight between the militants and the Indian soldiers.

We cannot deny that there were some ill treatments of the Kashmiris by the Indian soldiers. This, however, was by individual Indian soldiers. The Indian army or the government could not be blamed for this. The Indian soldiers have helped the Kashmiris in many ways. By fighting against the militants and the extremists, the Indian soldiers have protected Kashmir from these forces. Some Kashmiris, on the other hand, have done themselves injustice by supporting the militants against the Indian government. This, however, is a small number. Most Kashmiris want to be part of India as shown in their celebration of the Indian Independence Day in Kashmir.

In Kashmir, people get hurt and some die every day. We are caught in the middle of two groups, the Indian army and the militants fighting with each other. All we want is peace and to be left alone. Life is hard here. What we want is to be able to do ordinary everyday things without worrying about our safety. We need to be able to go to the market, shop for food, go to school or college, or to work. We should be allowed to lead normal lives like people all over the world. What I want most of all is to go back to the days before 1987 - before the violence broke out - and we had regular lives.
