Direct Connect Cost Savings• Data transfer to AWS is free.  • Data Transfer from AWS =

– $0.12 per GB for Internet-based connections– $0.02 per GB for Direct Connect

• Typical customer transfers 200,000 GB from AWS per month.   • AWS Data Transfer via Internet:

– 200,000 x $0.12 = $24,000– Internet connection $ 300 (e.g. Vendor Business Internet)

– TOTAL:  $24,300• AWS Data Transfer via Direct Connect (existing IP VPN customer)

– 200,000 x $0.02 $4,000– 1 Gbps IP VPN port $3,071– TOTAL:                       $7,071

AWS Direct Connect• AWS Direct Connect supports all AWS cloud services

including:– Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2); – Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC); – Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3); and,– Amazon DynamoDB

• First step: Customers must create their own AWS account via the AWS website before setting up their XO provided connections

How Customers Set Up AWS Direct Connect

Select a region

Only 2 choices: 1G or 10GIf customers want different port speeds, the text abovedirects them to “contact one of our partners for other options to connect.” - Those other options are: Hosted (NNI-based) Connection @ 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, or 500 Mbps

How Customers Set Up AWS Direct Connect

Customers select either 1G or 10G connection. This automatically generates an LOA/CFA and emails it to the customer. If customers want lower speed connections, they are directed to contact an AWS Direct Connect Partner i.e. XOWhen the connections are set up, customers move on to set up their Virtual Interfaces

How XO Connects to AWS Direct Connect• Options:

• Ethernet Private Line @ 1G or 10G (no sub-rates) via cross-connects; or,

• IP-VPN via NNIs (Seattle & Ashburn) from 50 Mbps to 500 Mbps; or,

• IP-VPN @ 1G or 10G via cross-connect at any or all locations below

How do I Order an AWS Connection?• Existing XO IP-VPN Customers:

– Just order a Port & a Cloud Connect. There is no “loop” as colo sites are on-net & the “CPE” is already there – it’s our MCR

• NOTE: You also need the customer’s AWS Account # & put it on the SOA

• 50M to 500M: – In XOG Configurator specify a port at one of the speeds

supported by AWS e.g. 100 MB Service– Specify a Cloud Connect: AWS Direct Connect Shared Port

• 1G or 10G: – In XOG Configurator specify either a 1 G Service or a 10 G

Service – Order a Cloud Connect: AWS Direct Connect Dedicated Port

» AWS will generate an LOA/CFA to the customer for this work. Customer must give the LOA/CFA to Equinix and to XO

» Customer pays XO for the cross-connect

order a line from the A Location to the Z Location (either of the shaded sites in slide 4)

• Order a Cloud Connect: AWS Direct Connect Dedicated Port

» AWS will generate an LOA/CFA to the customer for this work. Customer must give the LOA/CFA to Equinix and to XO

» Customer pays XO for the cross-connect

What does AWS “look” like on my bill?• AWS (and Microsoft Azure) Cloud Connections appear as separate $0

charges on customers’ invoices– Connection is free. Customer pays for the port– Lets customers have multiple cloud providers on their invoices

Things to keep in mind• XO

– does not resell AWS cloud services. We just connect to them. Customers contract with AWS for their AWS services

• AWS Direct Connect– has no SLAs. XO can only provide latency etc. guarantees to

the AWS connect point• AWS has data centers in Ashburn & Seattle. This is where

XO has its NNIs to AWS– AWS dictates where customers can connect to their services

• Although, in practice, AWS is very flexible re: this• Customers can check the latest AWS documentation for

equipment and other requirements

Things to keep in mind• How much bandwidth do I need?

– This is use case dependent. Storage heavy customers will want 10G ports, while smaller enterprise workloads, like a SharePoint site, can use sub-1G

– In practice, > 80% of customers connect @ 1 Gbps• What is the latency?

– It depends. There are multiple Availability Zones (Data Centers) in an AWS region. Latency to a server in one could be higher to latency to a server in another.

– It’s still single digit latencies between Direct Connect and AWS resources.
