2018 Southwestern Ontario Regional Report Prepared by Mark Sementilli June 2 rd , 2018 Wrestling in the 2017/2018 year seemed to almost go seamless from 2016/2017 right into the current season. With Canada Summer Games last summer there was plenty of summer wrestling in way of preparation camps that many from our region took part in. Things such as Ontario Cup, the Team Ontario training camp at the Toronto Wrestling Development Centre, BTS Wrestle the North matches and the Belaglozov/Gia camp, made July a busy but enjoyable off season experience that rolled right into the current year. These events not only developed our wrestlers but it exposed them to international and high level clinicians and wrestlers from Canada, USA, Georgia, Cuba, and Russia. It also seemed to create a comradery that I witnessed throughout this past wrestling year amongst our wrestlers with wrestlers throughout Ontario at events throughout the season. Starting in the fall, once again SWO athletes took advantage of OHP development sessions such as the October OHP combine and the December Erica Weibe OHP Clinic, not to mention involvement in the numerous tournaments this past season leading up to and including the recent Canadian Cadet & Juvenile Championships in Edmonton. Speaking of Nationals, Congratulations to Chris Capangyarihan and London-Western on the U19 Men’s National Team Title! This past year SWO was very much involved in the Ontario Winter Games which from all feedback I have received was a very a positive experience for all. Orillia did a great job organizing the Winter Games as a whole as did Bob Parsons in organizing the wrestling portion. I would like to time to thank coaches Chris Capangyarihan, David Tremblay Sr. and Diane Carpio-Sementilli for a job well done. SWO won Silver in both Women’s and Men’s overall team titles. I feel that the OWG gave us plenty of opportunity to develop our Bantam and Cadet Age wrestlers by providing a budget directly to our region giving us the ability to run several developmental clinics for any who wanted to participate. As a region, SWO was able to provide 10 separate training opportunities leading up to the OWG with the money allocated as regional training for our area. The following is a breakdown over the course of three months (Dec 2017 to Feb 2018) with the number of participants and the locations offered.

2018 Southwestern Ontario Regional ReportPrepared by Mark SementilliJune 2rd, 2018

Wrestling in the 2017/2018 year seemed to almost go seamless from 2016/2017 right into the current season.

Due to positive feedback with open Tuesday night sessions featuring David Treblay Jr., L’Essor WC decided to continue an unofficial regional training opportunity, which has been mostly funded by the L’Essor WC, has remained open to all clubs and will continue to operate until the end of June.

There are already opportunities planned though OAWA ODP and Beat The Streets in July which will once again provide all wrestlers an opportunity to compete and train well into this coming summer. From early indication, SWO will be a part of and be represented.

Our region and more specifically, Windsor was host to several events this year. I would like to congratulate and thank Dave Hawkins on successfully running all the tournaments he ran this season making wrestling tournaments more accessible to wrestlers in SWO. I would also like to highlight that both the 2018 Ontario Junior Championships as well as the 2017/2018 OFSSA Championship were held in Windsor. Along with these two big events, both WECSSA and SWOSSA and few local tournaments were all hosted by Windsor Wrestling Club.

Club Specific Highlights

L’Essor Wrestling Coaches Shayne Byrne, David Tremblay Jr and David Tremblay

L’Essor WC held many regional training camps with our guest clinician being David Tremblay Jr. These were held mostly during the winter break and leading up to the Ontario Winter Game. The clinics were supported and attended by various clubs in our region.

L’Essor WC attended Canada Summer Games/Team Ontario and Beat the Streets Summer Development camps, two OHP development clinics, and participated in two Adrian College (Michigan) clinics

L’Essor WC wrestlers were able to participate in a couple of Pennsylvania duals this past season where they competed at Wyoming Seminary and in State College.

L’Essor WC has introduced an open to all regional training night each week and it has been steadily growing. L’Essor WC participated in all age related Provincial Championships, Ontario Winter Games as well as the U17/19

In closing my report, I would like to say that this past year really seem to highlight the benefit of what regional training can provide. This in conjunction with developmental programs offered in the Central Ontario region seems to give a greater cost to benefit ratio. When travel expenses are reduced and time spent traveling can be used on the mat, the time and money saved would seem to directly go to the wrestler.

This concludes my report. I look forward to the summer events and the upcoming season. Please accept my report on behalf of the Southwestern Ontario Region.

Thank you very much,Mark Sementilli
