St. John’s, Belper, were crown Derbyshire County Basketball Champions 2012 on Saturday

17th March at Moorways Stadium in Derby. Having our local Amber Valley event they took

the court with 9 other district winners in a tough competition which was organized by Am-

ber Valley SSP with Derby Trailblazers supporting. Two leagues ran simultaneously with

the top teams playing against one another in the final. Having dominated in their opening

games they qualified for the final having won 100% of their games with Christ the King

also joining them! The scores were equal going into half time and with only 6 mins of

game time remaining St Johns

managed to maintain their un-

beaten run with a winning score of

24—11! Well done to all at St.

Johns.

We’ve had a great term of compe-

titions with our first MICRO com-

petition taking place which had 4

teams involved. This new format

event for micro schools is designed

to make it easier to access main-

stream competitions playing 3v3

rather than 5v5. Kirk Langley won this first competition with Wessington coming runners

up in a great event. Credit should be paid to Fritchely who not only two teams into the

micro event but a full squad into the small/large basketball event. Over 200 young people

participated in the basketball this year which was supported by referees from Derby Trail-

blazers.

William Gilbert took 1st place in the Ripley Futsal event having seen off competition from

Kilburn Jnr, Ripley Jnr, Waingroves and Leys Junior. In a week disrupted with snow and

poor weather we managed to facilitate this competition with the support of the FA Skills

coaches working in Amber Valley. William Gilbert won four out of four in the competition

and showed some great intuitive play with the futsal ball which has a reduce bounce ball,

bigger goals, kick ins, corners and is played to line markings on the court.

Secondary successes at County Events! Amber Valley Schools were in great form for the Derbyshire County Cross Country Cham-

pionships held at Mount St. Mary’s, Spinkhill. In freezing temperatures students from the

borough competed against the other districts in Derbyshire having been selected from

their results in the borough competitions with a maximum of 10 runners per category

being able to run. Amber Valley won the County Year 7 Girls, Inter Boys and Inter Girls

and were 3rd place in Year 7 Boys. A fantastic effort by all runners participating!

Heanor Gate and Alfreton Grange were both involved in the secondary sportshall Athletics

competition presenting Amber Valley on the 27th March at Moorways. Alfreton Grange Y8

Girls were so close to taking the title of county champions but we 4 points off 1st place

and only 3 off 2nd place!! Incredible scoring and performing, well done girls! Alfreton also

took a Y8 Boys team who were 4th. Heanor Gate were also involved in the county event

with a Y7 team, their teams finished 5th and 6th respectively.

TAG Rugby St Johns, Belper, helped themselves to even more success with a victory

in the Belper Rugby Club Tag Competition in March. On a warm sunny evening two

leagues were played with ten teams participating overall. With only one place fro each

league available it was pretty tense as the scores came in. St Johns A booked their place

with a full 4 victories however, in the league 2 St Johns B and Crich Junior were both tied

on points. Equally they were also tied on try difference, in the end one more try for St

Johns B pushed them into the final against their peers! St Johns A took the victory 6—3

over their B team with St Elizabeth's in 3rd place and Crich Junior in forth. It was a great

event fully supported by the club, their coaches, volunteers and young leaders.

The northern event, hosted at Amber Valley Rugby Club the day after Belper, again had

10 teams participating in a great evening of rugby. Fritchely A and Swanwick Primary

proved the teams to beat in their leagues and faced one another in an head to head final.

The final was won by three tries with Swanwick Primary narrowly taking the title against

Fritchely. Duffield Meadows took the third spot with a victory over South Wingfield 5-2

and Marlpool Junior were fifth with a 5 –1 win over St Johns Ripley who took sixth place.

Derbyshire School Games

Representing Amber Valley in the School Games, Mundy Junior School were the 2nd best

team in Derbyshire coming runners up to

Brailsford after loosing 1-0 in the final. It

looked like penalties would be required in the

final before Brailsford grabbed a goal 10 sec-

onds from the end of play. Pictured below are

Mundy Junior who were ‘chuffed’ with their

runners up certificates at the end of a long

day of competition!

Swanwick Primary were 5th in the Sportshall

Athletics and only 20 points of the top spot,

proving that the competition was stronger than ever. Also competing were Swanwick

Sports College in the Sportshall Athletics for SEN students taking 5th position. It was a

great day for all students involved in the very first Derbyshire School Games.

Over 150 boys and girls were involved in the

football competition held at Power League in

Derby. The indoor football event has been a

regular fixture in the competition calendar for

a number of years and this year saw more

girls teams participating that boys which

shows a great step change in developing the

girls football. Young leaders were on hand

from Derby College and the schools to refe-

ree, score and time keep for the event. Four

individual leagues ran with the winners high-

lighted on the previous page. In May we are

running a Y7 Boys and Girls football festival at

on the pitch at DCFC’s Pride Park Stadium!

Our first ever squash festival took place at the end of Feb-

ruary with four schools bring-

ing six students to participate in skills and games against

each other and other schools. Using the ‘mini squashable’

format students put their skills in to practice in the courts

based at Alfreton Leisure Cen-

tre.

Gold Leader News Pictured below are the Sports Council at John Flam-steed who are working through a presentation to

present to their local schools. Their focus is on the Olympic and Para-lympic games with the aim of enthus-ing young people to participate in sport! Great work all!

Mini Olympics As part of the Borough Councils Cultural Exchange this years Mini Olympics will

take place in Amber Valley for 2012. Eight students from Amber Valley are involved with Poland, Sweden and France also attend-ing with eight young people. Jack-Henry Williams (Mill Hill,) and Aiden Chauntry, (Aldercar) Pictured, have both been selected to be part of the week long resi-dential including, Jordan Clarke (Heanor Gate), Tom Bingham (John Flamsteed), Emily Heappey (JF), Levi Tabbon & Rachel Wilson (HG) and Georgia Nicholson (Belper). Well done to all our students involved.

Small Schools Take the Plaudits!

Congratulations to Loscoe Primary School for winning the Borough High Five Championships, having seen off competition from St

Johns and Swanwick Primary in a great final held at Henaor Leisure Centre! Over twenty teams participated in the High 5 compe-

titions this year!

Crich Carr were also in action this week at the County Small School Sportshall Competition ran at Moorways. They were our Bor-

ough Champions in October and were representing Amber Valley before the secondary event. They were placed 4th overall in the

whole of Derbyshire which is a great achievement for the school, staff and all the pupils!
