A Growing Market for Scenting Systems

The process of creating fine fragrances for the skin has been well established for hundreds of years and now supports a multi-billion dollar industry.

The scenting of rooms and buildings has also been going on for many years, but in the last few years this form of scenting has become increasingly popu-lar. European consumers are today spending, in real terms, 5 times more per person on scenting their homes than they did 10 years ago. This scenting generally takes the form of scented candles, aerosol sprays and what are known as “plug-in devices”.

The latest market to emerge, however is the scent-ing of large commercial spaces, such as hotels, social venues, retail stores and offices. This has been driven by substantial research highlighting the psychological and physiological impact of scent, and its ability to influence the behaviour and mood of consumers.

In an increasingly competitive consumer market, major retailers and hotel operators have recognised scenting as an innovative and highly effective way to attract and retain customers.

The creation of a beautifully scented environment depends upon 4 critical success factors; Designing and Manu-facturing the Scent Oil, converting that oil into a fine vapour, and distributing that vapour effectively around the occupied zone.

The Air/Q 1200 works by generating ultra fine, ultra-light droplets approximately 1 micron in diameter. By comparison, a droplet from a typical pressurized aero-sol spray can is 50 microns in diameter. Compared to ultra fine particles from an AirQ device, those from an aerosol are thus 50 times larger in terms of diameter, but a massive 125,000 larger in terms of weight and volume.

As a result, the AirQ device makes much more efficient use of the scent oil, as 100% of the particles will evaporate into the air. This compares very favourably with an aerosol, where the larger droplets (which account for the vast majority of the oil in terms of mass), will be too heavy to remain suspended in the air and will instead simply fall to the floor, creating a sticky residue.

Fully Integrated Scenting Systems

Previous generations of scent devices suffered a number of drawbacks. Poor quality fragrances were sprayed into the air via crude aerosol devices, with no regard for the movement of air within the occupied zone. The result was alternating periods of excessively strong smells, with a strong chemical element, followed by a slow decline as the poorly constituted fragrance oil lost its potency and its effect diminished. The large droplets formed by the aerosol and visible to the naked eye, would quickly fall with gravity and have no impact on the fragrance of the air.

In collaboration with Firmenich, Prolitec and DreamAir, Fläkt Woods is now able to take scenting systems to an entirely new level. Beautiful fragrance oils are nebulised into a uniform “dry mist” that is incapable of forming sticky deposits. This fragranced mist is then seamlessly induced into the air stream and distributed uniformly and efficiently around the occupied by the HVAC system.

Do not confuse these Scenting Systems with the crude Air Fresheners of the past - the 2 approaches bear no comparison and the experiences of end users will be completely different!

The Guggenheim Scent Opera in New YorkLed by Stewart Matthew, who developed the original concept, and renowned fragrance designer Christophe Laudamiel, the Aeosphere team commissioned composers Nico Muhly and Valgeir Sigurdsson to create a stunning musical score, whilst Fläkt Woods developed the scenting technology. Audience members listened to music in a darkened theatre while a scent organ, designed by Fläkt Woods, triggered scent microphones attached to each seat, which emitted suggestive scents to tell the story. The system works on compressed air, which flows through a main feed pipe. It is ducted to pick up the smells from the scent organ, using 35 individual cartridges specially packed to respect the balance of the scents and to deliver the vapours in a safe and non-con-taminating form. The system is self-cleaning using a specially formulated purging solution. The success of the Guggenheim show has generated strong global interest from operators of cinemas, keen to use sensory enhancement in order to add a whole new dimension to the cinema-going experience.

All three machines produce the same, tightly controlled micro-droplets. Maintenance is limited to the regular replacement of oil cartridges and cleaning, with seals being replaced annually.

The Fläkt Woods range of Scenting Devices

AirQ 200 The AirQ 200 is our smallest device. This device is not suitable for installing into an HVAC system, but can be used to supple-ment an HVAC-mounted scenting system to boost the scent in the corner of a room where the HVAC air distribution is poor, or in rooms not serviced by the HVAC supply. It is typically mounted onto a wall, but also be used on a ceiling or be free-standing.

AirQ 500 The AirQ 500 series has approximately twice the capacity of the smaller machine and can therefore treat a larger space. It can be mounted in the same way as the smaller machine, with the scented air puffing out of the hole in the front of the machine, but can also be mounted on a duct or AHU, when the air is directed up through a plastic tube that passes out of the top of the machine and through the wall of the duct or AHU. A special version of this machine is available that can be suspended from the type of track systems often used to support lights in a retail store.

AirQ 1200 The AirQ 1200 series is designed specifically to be incorporated as part of an HVAC and is ideally supplied factory-mounted in the AHU. Alternatively it can be installed on site, on the side of the AHU or ductwork. A single machine can comfortably treat 15,000 cubic metres per hour. On a larger system it may therefore be necessary to mount more than one machine per AHU. If the client has ex-pressed a desire to achieve a particularly intense aroma, then this limit should be reduced to around 12,000 cubic metres per hour. Equally, a single machine can treat over 20,000 cubic metres per hour, if the client wants a more subtle scenting effect. The oil cartridges will typically last for between 2 and 6 months, depending on the intensity levels.

Harnessing the power of scent Extensive research carried out by the perfume industry has established a clear pattern of responses that are typically evoked by different types of scent, including relaxation, excitement, improved concentration and a general sense of well-being. This can be used to improve learning in classroom environment, to accelerate recov-ery rates in hospitals and to increase productivity in the workplace. The MRI room in Florida’s Hospital Seaside Imaging Center has been vanilla-scented to help cure claustrophobia and tension. This has led, the centre says, to a decrease in the number of people who need sedation and a 50 percent drop in cancellations.Many perfumes and fine fragrances will incorporate natural floral scents, in the hope of stimulating these responses:
