Newington Community Primary School
Ambition, Achievement, Aspiration On Friday the 20th November 2015, Logan Sandwell, Sam-
uel Thompson and Joshua Thompson attended a Thanet Dis-
trict Presentation evening with 70 other Beavers, Cubs and
Scouts for their Chief Scout Award, This is the highest
award a scout can achieve in their section of scouting. Logan
and Samuel achieved their Bronze award for Beavers and
Joshua achieved his Silver award for Cubs. To attain their
awards all boys have to complete all of their sections chal-
lenge badges, complete a personal challenge and complete
nights away on camp. They were presented their awards by
the Deputy Mayors of Margate, Broad-
stairs and Ramsgate.
Nursery Outing - Nursery had an ex-
citing trip to St Peters Church! We in-
vestigated the grounds, read the Christ-
mas Story and sang with the Choir!
The children behaved beautifully and
truly showed how amazing the pupils of
Newington are. We asked lots of ques-
tions about what we could see and
Pauline, the church verger, answered all
of them! We also enjoyed our journey on
the mini bus
where we sang our Nativity songs along the way.'
Grace Johnson - A very big thank you to Grace Johnson in Year
4, who has been working in support of the charity: ‘Operation
Christmas Child’. Over the last few weeks, she has been working in-
credibly hard to make a difference to the lives of less fortunate
children around the world by collecting gifts, which she has packed
into shoeboxes. All the shoeboxes have now been filled and are on
their way around the world to help bring joy to young children at
Christmas. A special thank you also, to all the children in school, who
brought in gifts to help Grace in her cause.
Mrs Andrews
Four years ago we started a mission which has reached fruition this week. We embarked on a
programme which teaches children to read in a systematic way. It is called Read, Write Inc.
and I know that your children will have told you all
about it. However, any scheme is only as good as the
people who teach it. After four years the number of
children who are able to decode words in year one
has risen from 27% up to 91% this year. As a result
of this we have been awarded the Read, Write Inc. Model school status, which means we are
able to teach the rest of the world how to teach phonics. Huge congratulations should be of-
fered to Mrs Sandy, for her drive, inspiration and passion in ensuring the children achieve
their very best, as well as the rest of the staff who teach phonics for their awe inspiring
teaching, day in day out. Well done to all of you.
Zappar - The Christmas performance season is very nearly upon us! To help your child learn
the words to their songs we have created a very fancy way to get you involved.
Those of you that follow our Facebook page will know that Zappar is the future; all you have to
do is download the App from the App or Play Stores and scan the code.
All of the songs will magically appear for you to sing along with and help your little one learn
the words.
Each code will be posted on our Facebook page and a paper version will be available in the of-
fice upon request.
If you have any technical questions please ask Mr Beech.
Reception Classes Visit - As part of their topic of 'Kings, Queens and Castles' this term,
Reception have been to visit a very special building.
After finding out about castles and special events,
the children expressed an interest in churches and of
course, Christmas. St. Nicholas at Wade welcomed us
with a tour, a special Christmas story and Christmas
treats. The children had a wonderful time and enjoyed
every minute

Dear Parents,
We now enter the most special time in the school year when there is an air of excitement and
celebration, however we do not relent one jot in our pursuit of children achieving their best.
Maths and Literacy continue to take place every day and will do so until the end of the term.
I hope that you will agree that our entrance hall and Main hall look quite stunning with the dec-
orations that the children have put together in order to make us all feel Christmassy. I love
the fact that every child will have contributed to making our school look so amazing and in do-
ing so, making our school such a special place for us all to work and learn.
Our Choir, expertly conducted by Mr Eldred, took part in a Carol Competition organised by a
local radio station, Seaside Radio. You can listen to the Carol performed by the children by go-
ing to their website at www.seaside-radio.co.uk and then voting for Newington’s Choir. I hope
as many of you as possible will do this and please pass on to
friends and family and encourage them to do likewise
The community element of the title in the school name is
immensely important to me. For a community (or family) to
thrive they need to have a common goal, which is, in our
case, ensuring every child achieves their social and academ-
ic potential. However, an intensely warming feeling comes
from belonging to a community; shared aims, strong and
lasting bonds and an essence of oneness. Christmas is unde-
niably a time when we can come together as families, in
whatever make up that may be. In order to foster that
feeling within our community Mr Eldred has planned a can-
dle-lit carol concert for families, Governors, and staff, at
3.30pm on the 17th December, in the playground with the
stage. It will only last 30 minutes or so, but will be a chance for all of us to join in communion,
with a spirit of togetherness, whilst enjoying that feeling of community. I hope you will all be
able to join us.
Year 5/6 Basketball Tournament
This Kent Schools event took place on Friday 20th November where our
team came up against 3 other schools to compete for a place in the
qualifier. The tournament saw the team take on Upton, St Saviours and
Bromstone where they pushed hard to overcome challenging oppo-
nents. As the tournament progressed the team started to find their
stride and worked well together to gain possession and push forward.
Well done to the following pupils who took part:- Ryan Anscombe, Alfie
Webb, Oscar Murphy, Angel-Louise Merryweather, Paige Shepherd,
Frankie Stroud, Bradley Thompson-Rowlands and Mason Hunt.
Year 3/4 Sportshall Athletics
On Saturday 21st November our year 3/4 Sportshall athletics team took
to Ursuline College to compete against 11 other schools from around
Thanet. The event hosts 6 track events and 6 field events which takes
place across the day. Each school competing to gain their best result
and score high to achieve overall winners. Experiencing new athletic events our team worked tirelessly to
demonstrate their skill and determination to achieve. Thank you to all the parents who came to support the
team and made it possible for the children to compete. Well done to the following pupils:- Kate Stevens, Ro-
sie Hammond, Poppy Morris, Romeo Johnson, Adam Sen, Nicholas Bradfield, Khian Hammond, Kizzie Hay-
