Summer Education Camps 2020

Temple University has been offering summer camps for more than 30 years at our convenient Ambler campus. We have since extended our camp offerings to be held on Temple University’s vibrant Main Campus as well! Camps are available to kids and teens entering grades 2‒12 and take place during the months of June, July, and August. Most camps are one-week, full-day camps from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, extended care is available for an additional cost, allowing parents to drop off their children as early as 8 a.m. and pick them up as late at 5:45 p.m.

Summer camps at Temple University Ambler will take place at 580 Meetinghouse Road in Ambler, PA. Camps run Monday‒Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aftercare is available starting at 8 a.m. and ending at 5:45 p.m. at an additional cost. SPY TRAINING & WILD ABOUT ARTAre you the world’s next Super Spy? Assume a new identity and begin your spy training. Become an expert in the art of disguise, code-breaking, surveillance, and stealth. As a team, you and the other cadets will solve high-level crimes, navigate challenging obstacle courses, and try to reveal the double-agent. Then, embrace your creative side in the afternoon. AMERICAN RED CROSS BABYSITTING TRAINING CAMPIn this one-day camp, boys and girls learn all of the ins and outs of being successful babysitters, including safety and security, first aid basics, child development, child care, age-appropriate play and activity planning, and effective child management. Camp fee includes instructional material, safety handbook, and an American Red Cross certificate. Note: No discounts apply to this camp.$125 | June 19 | Ages 11‒15

AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION (AHA)HEARTSAVER CPR, AED, AND FIRST AIDThis one-day camp covers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and choking relief for adults, children, and infants. Learn how and when to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). Learn critical skills needed to respond to and manage first aid emergencies until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. First aid basics and medical/injury/environmental emergencies will be covered. LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT ROBOTICS: BEGINNERSDiscover the Lego® Mindstorms™ NXT Robotics kit to create incredible robot inventions. Learn to combine Lego® pieces, motors, sensors, and computer software to

BROADWAY BOUNDGet a taste of Broadway as you learn about singing, dancing, and acting in this one-week camp! Discover what it takes to audition, rehearse, and even perform a show! DESIGN AND BUILD A BOATWork in teams to construct a rowboat made of cardboard and duct tape. Prototypes will be tested and final construction will produce a boat suitable for the Ambler Regatta that will take place in the campus pool at the end of the week. FILM AND TV CAMPWork as cast and crew in our popular Film and TV Camp! Learn basic levels of acting, directing, voice-over, camera operation, and working on a green screen. HEROES BEHIND THE BADGEThis camp provides the opportunity to establish positive relationships with law enforcement and public safety personnel like police officers, park rangers, and EMTs.  Meet them, hear their stories, then learn and practice the basic skills of a first responder!  Activities include physical fitness, raising the colors, and team-building exercises.  Learn basics of fire safety, crime scene processing and evidence collection, resource protection, personal safety, and more!$50 | July 20‒24 | 5th‒8th grade

SEAPERCH ROBOTS IIContinue exploring various technologies for the construction and competition of your SeaPerch robot. Build an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) while learning about robotics, engineering, science, and math. Teams will test their robots, competing in challenges in the campus pool (campers will not be in the pool; no swimming required).$595 + $20 material fee | August 3‒14 (2 weeks)

SPHERO ROBOTSSphero robots can be driven around like remote control cars on grass and roads, in the pool, and on other surfaces, and can even perform tricks like a skateboard! The Sphero is also a game, where you can play tag, golf, and fight virtual zombies on your mobile device. Campers must have their own mobile device (smartphone/tablet) that can access either the Apple or Android app stores.$475 | August 3‒7

ESCAPE THE CAMP AND WILDERNESS SKILLSJoin us for a week of mind-bending challenges and plot-twists set outdoors. Solve escape mysteries, then be trained in code-breaking, observation, and immersive story creation as you build your own escape experience. Then, discover what it takes to be an outdoor survivor. Use ancient skills and modern tools to build shelters, learn outdoor navigation and signaling, learn how to pack for family adventures, and practice the secrets of invisibility and stealth.$375 | August 3‒7

LEGO MINDSTORMS ROBOTICS NXT: ROBOT BATTLESEnjoy some intense head-to-head competitions, but don’t worry about destroying your robot like typical “battle bots.” The competitions will include exciting battles like Sumo Robots and Robot Jousting. HISTORY THROUGH BOARD GAMINGLearn about a series of strategy games recreating decisive battles fought in our world history, like Stratego, Risk, Confusion, and Battle Cry.  Use your wit and skills to conquer enemies and occupy territory.  Each day will feature a different battle from critical moments in history.  Then, recreate or modify the strategies you’ve learned on “fields of battle.” These games are suitable for beginners who are also interested in history.$345 | August 10‒14

VIRTUAL REALITY & YOUTUBE CONTENT CREATORSLearn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments, and crafting memorable 3D experiences. Create multilevel arcade games in Gamemaker through a systematic process. Bring a flash drive to camp. SPEAKING WITH CONFIDENCE: PUBLIC SPEAKING FOR TEENSDo you get nervous when asked to speak or give a presentation in front of your class or an audience? Join us in a fun and relaxed atmosphere as you learn to develop your public speaking skills. Build your confidence and alleviate anxiety when speaking before people. Students will participate in viewing and evaluating speeches as well as in writing various styles of speeches. We’ll also examine qualities of great public speakers.$325 | July 6‒10

FILM DESIGN & EDITINGLearn how to make and edit movies for YouTube while learning the professional software Adobe Premiere. Be involved in activities such as storyboarding, gathering information for productions, videotaping, and editing the final product. Basic computer knowledge and creativity is required. BUDDING BUSINESS LEADERSAcquire valuable skills by solving actual business problems. Learn real-world business skills such as team building, leadership development, financial management, verbal communication, and business

etiquette. Campers will work in teams and will be mentored by the camp instructor. On the last day, campers will present and defend their solutions.$345 | July 20‒24

WEB MULTIMEDIA DEVELOPMENTTake your web design skills to the next level! Learn the basics of preparing graphics, audio, and video for the web. Emphasis will be on proper formatting and quality. Campers should bring headphones and a flash drive to camp.$345 | July 20‒24

CAREER EXPLORATIONS IN HORTICULTURE (GRADES 7-9)Through hands-on activities, discover the wide variety

of opportunities that are available in the horticulture and green industries, including landscape architect/designer, greenhouse manager/grower, florist, aquaponics/hydroponics, horticulturist, botanical illustrator, and much more! Daily activities will utilize the Ambler Arboretum, greenhouse, and outdoor gardens and trails.$345 | July 27‒31

DEBATE FOR TEENS: THE ART OF ARGUINGDiscover how to better verbally express your thoughts, leverage facts, and persuade others. This camp will explore arguing in a civilized way. Students will learn how to research and create a well-thought-out argument. FSI: FORENSIC SCIENCE GOES TO COURTA burning car, multiple missing persons, dry bank accounts and suspects galore—this murder mystery is not for the faint of heart. Participate in laboratory techniques used in the forensic industry, and examine a mock crime scene. Accumulate evidence through drug analysis, blood spatter examination, fire debris composition testing, and other practices. Campers conclude the first week of their investigation by acting as the grand jury by establishing probable cause and screening criminal indictments. In week 2, campers continue to strengthen their case and finish with criminal sentencing in a mock trial.$645 + $30 material fee | July 6‒17 (2 weeks)

LEADERSHIP & SERVICE EXPERIENCE FOR TEENSTeens who actively engage in community service and take on leadership roles at school and their communities make a real difference and contribute

Camps run Monday‒Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aftercare is available starting at 8 a.m. and ending at 5:45 p.m. at an additional cost. 2020 registration, refund, and withdrawal policies

Payment and RegistrationPayment, in full, is due upon registration. Payment includes the camp fee as well as any materials fee or computer lab fee. Register and pay by credit card at noncredit.temple.edu/summercamps. Or, call the Office of Non-Credit and Continuing Education at 267-468-8500.

You may mail your paper registration form with a check or money order, made payable to Temple University. We regret that we cannot accept credit card payments by mail. Cash is also not an acceptable form of payment.

Refunds and WithdrawalsYou must request a withdrawal at least 3 weeks before the start date of the camp session that your child is enrolled in. If your withdrawal request is received at least 3 weeks before the camp session start date, you will receive a refund minus a $50.00 withdrawal fee. Withdrawal requests received less than 3 weeks before the camp session start date will not be entitled to any refund. This is regardless of when you registered for the camp. All withdrawals must be received in writing and can be sent by email to [email protected] or by fax at 267-468-8506.
