Upgrade requests are cleared based on the window applicable to your status level:

Upgrade requests are prioritized first by status level, then by fare and finally by the order in which they were upgraded. Request your upgrades early!

EXP members are awarded 8 per year they qualify/re-qualify.
SWUs/eVIPs are valid on virtually ALL fare classes.
SWUs/eVIPS are valid ONLY on American metal.

SWUs are also earned at certain MM thresholds.
